Description

A WHEEL FOR A VEHICLE
This invention relates to a wheel for a vehicle and, more especially, this invention relates to a wheel which is for a vehicle and which is for use in an emergency caused by the tyre of the wheel becoming punctured.
Wheels on vehicles typically comprise a hub and a road tyre which is mounted on the hub. The tyre is typically a tubeless tyre. It sometimes happens that the tubeless tyre gets punctured by an object, which causes the tyre to deflate and thus prevents the vehicle from being driven. The tyre may deflate at any time during a journey and often the vehicle becomes immobile in a relatively inaccessible or dangerous place, for example on an isolated country road or on a motorway. Sometimes a driver of the vehicle is able to change the deflated tyre by using a spare tyre carried by the vehicle. However it frequently happens that the driver is not able to change the tyre, for example if the driver is a woman, elderly or simply without the required knowledge or tools. It is then necessary for the driver of the vehicle to call an emergency service in order to get the tyre replaced. The wait for a person from the emergency service may be considerable and this may cause the driver to become further agitated.
It is an aim of the present invention to reduce the above mentioned problems.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided a wheel for a vehicle, which wheel comprises: (i) a hub; (ii) a road tyre which is mounted on the hub and which is for use of the wheel on roads; (iii) a first valve which is for the road tyre; (iv) an inner tube which is mounted inside the road tyre and which extends around the hub; (v) a second valve which is for the inner tube; and (vi) a cover which is positioned in the road tyre and around the inner tube, and wherein: (vii) the road tyre is a tubeless tyre; (viii) the inner tube is deflated in normal use of the wheel on the vehicle; (ix) the cover protects the inner tube from being punctured by an object puncturing the road tyre; (x) the inner tube is inflatable via the second valve in the event that the object punctures the road tyre and causes the road tyre to deflate; and (xi) the cover is configured to enable the inner tube to be inflated such as to enable the road tyre to continue to be used on the vehicle.
The wheel of the present invention is advantageous in that it is able to be used in emergency situations to enable a punctured deflated road tyre to be re-inflated and continue to be used on the vehicle. There is no need to change the tyre and there is no need to call the emergency services. The vehicle can continue on its journey and the puncture can be dealt with at the driver's earliest convenience. The cover is able to act to stop the inner tube from being punctured as the object punctures the road tyre. The cover is also able to act to stop the inner tube being punctured by the object when the inner tube is inflated. Typically the object is a nail or a screw and the nail or a screw may be relatively long. The cover is thus advantageous in being such as to protect the inner tube from being punctured by an object both when the inner tube is deflated and when the inner tube is inflated. This in turn is advantageous because the object puncturing the tyre typically stays in the tyre and is not removed at the time of the emergency.
The wheel of the present invention may include an inner tyre which is positioned in the road tyre between the cover and the inside of the road tyre. The inner tyre is able to provide further protection for the inner tube from the object puncturing the road tyre. This further protection may be especially desirable when the object is a long object such for example as a long screw or a long nail.
The cover may be an expandable cover which expands when the inner tube is inflated.
The cover may be in segments. The segments may be arranged to slide away from each other consequent upon the inner tube being inflated. Alternatively, the segments may separate from each other consequent upon the inner tube being inflated.
The cover may be made of any suitable material. Thus the cover may be made of a rubber material or a plastics material. The rubber material may be a puncture-resisting rubber material. The plastics material may be a hard plastics material. Other materials may be employed.
The inner tyre may be made of the same material as the road tyre.
Different materials may be employed if desired.
The road tyre and the remainder of the wheel may be constructed as for known wheels. Thus the hub may typically be metal hub.
The present invention also provides a vehicle when provided with the wheel of the invention.
The vehicle may be any suitable vehicle including, for example, a car, van, coach, lorry, bus or bicycle. The hub will be of a construction suitable for the particular type of vehicle.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows schematically a first wheel of the present invention; and Figure 2 shows schematically a second wheel of the present invention; Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a wheel 2 for a vehicle. The wheel 2 comprises a hub 4 and a road tyre 6 which is mounted on the hub 4. The road tyre 6 is for use of the wheel 2 on roads. The wheel 2 has a first valve 8 which is for the road tyre 6.
The wheel 2 further comprises an inner tube 10 which is mounted inside the road tyre 6 and which extends around the hub 4. A second valve 12 is provided for the inner tube 10. A cover 14 is positioned in the road tyre 6 and around the inner tube 10.
The road tyre 6 is a tubeless tyre. The inner tube 10 is deflated in normal use of the wheel 2 on the vehicle.
The cover 14 protects the inner tube 10 from being punctured by an object puncturing the road tyre 6.
The inner tube 10 is inflatable via the second valve 12 in the event that the object punctures the road tyre 6 and causes the road tyre 6 to deflate.
The cover 14 is configured to enable the inner tube 10 to be inflated such as to enable the wheel 2 to continue to be used on the vehicle.
The cover 14 is an expandable cover which expands when the inner tube 10 is inflated. Various types of cover 14 may be employed. Thus, for example, the cover 14 may be in segments which slide away from each other consequent upon the inner tube 10 being inflated. Alternatively, the cover 10 may be in segments which separate from each other consequent upon the inner tube 10 being inflated.
The cover 14 may be made of a puncture-resisting rubber material or a hard plastics material. Other materials may be employed.
The wheel 2 is advantageous in that the cover 14 is able to protect the inner tube 10 from the object puncturing the road tyre 6 when the inner tube 10 is in its initial deflated condition and also when the inner tube 10 is in it inflated emergency condition.
Referring now to Figure 2, there is shown a wheel 16 of the present invention. Similar parts as in the wheel 2 have been given the same reference numerals for ease of comparison and understanding.
The wheel 16 is provided with an inner tyre 18 which is positioned in the road tyre 6 between the cover 14 and the inside of the road tyre 6. The inner tyre 18 is able to provide further protection for the inner tube 10 from the object puncturing the road tyre 6. Thus the inner tyre 18 functions to provide further protection for the inner tube 10. The inner tyre 18 may or may not be provided with its own valve. The inner tyre 10 is made of the same material as the road tyre 6. The inner tyre 10 may however be made of a different material if desired, for example a material which is more resistant to being punctured than the material of the road tyre 6.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the inner tube 10 may be positioned centrally or off centre with respect to the hub 4. The wheels 2, 16 may be of other constructions, for example in dependence upon different wheel designs for different vehicles and different models of vehicles. Individual components shown in the drawings are not limited to use in their drawings and they may be used in other drawings and in all aspects of the invention. The invention also extends to the individual components mentioned and/or shown above, taken singly or in any combination.
