Abstract

259,433. Shirley, A. C. Jan. 4, 1926. Bench fittings.-Apparatus for assembling and disassembling the several elements of the transmission mechanism and magneto, of Ford automobiles comprises a base plate or ring with a central opening having an annular shoulder, a reversible disc or ring seating within the opening in the base plate and reversible nested rings seating within the disc. The plate 20, Fig. 2, is mounted on a bench or table 21 and has a circular opening 23 with shouldered edge 24, a corresponding opening 37 being provided in the bench so that the transmission unit may be supported with the recessed face of the flywheel 33 engaging the boss 22, and the brake, slow speed and reverse drums 26, 27, 28 extending through the hole in the bench, thus enabling the magnets 35 and ring gear 34 to be removed by unscrewing the bolts 36. An opening 38 is provided in the bench support, through which the clutch plates 32 may be removed by a suitable tool. The disc or ring which fits on the shouldered opening 23 is shown in reverse views in Figs. 3 and 5, this ring 41 being provided with locating holes 42 one of which is adapted to engage a pin 25 on the annular shoulder 24. One face of the ring 41 has a series of recesses 43 adapted to receive the heads of the bolts 36, as shown in Fig. 5, to hold the flywheel against rotation for removal of the drums 26, 27, 28 therefrom. The other face of the ring 41, Fig. 6, has an annular boss 45, radially grooved at 46, adapted when placed in the opening 23 with this side uppermost, as shown in Fig. 8, to engage internal lugs 47 in the drum 26 so that the drums are held against rotation for their convenient operation. The ring 41 has also three spaced openings 48<a> to accommodate the three pins 48, Fig. 9, on which the triple gears are mounted, this Figure showing the fly wheel 33 mounted on the boss 22 for convenient assembly of the magnets 35. An internal shoulder 51 round the opening 44 of the ring 41 is adapted to receive a disc 50, Fig. 11, with a boss 49 for supporting the flanged end 30 of the transmission shaft 29 for assembling the latter with the fly wheel. Fig. 13 shows a ring 51<1> with flange 52 seated in the shouldered opening of the disc 41 and provided with a shouldered seat 53 to receive the end flange of the sleeve 54 of the slow speed drum 27, or of the other drums, for removing the bushing 55 of the sleeve. Another ring 56, Fig. 19, with shouldered seats 58 may be fitted on the ring 51<1> to support the triple gears 31 for removing the bushing 60. Figs. 25 and 27 show a modified construction of disc 41<1> having on one face an annular groove 43<1> adapted to receive the heads of the magnet securing bolts and ribs 44<11> extending across the groove to hold the fly wheel against rotation. The other face of the disc 41<1> has a hub 45<1> and a boss 46<1> notched at 47<1> to engage inwardly extending lugs on the brake drum.
