while the transmission shaft is indicated at 29. This shaft carries at one end a flange or disk 30. The transmission mechanism further includes a plurality of triple gears 31.
The reference character 32 indicates the clutch plates, 33 the fly wheel, 34; the ring gear which is mounted upon the fly wheel and 35 the magnets ot the fly wheel carried magneto, the said magnets being held in place by bolts 36. As previously stated this structure provides a unit which comprises a portion of the mechanism of a Ford automobile and it is not essential to the understanding of the present invention to specifically describe this structure or its operation.
The present invention provides means for conveniently supporting the unit so that accoss may be had to its various elements for the purpose of removing and installing them and to do this the invention provides the base plate 20 previously mentioned, the boss 22 of which is of a size to iit within the recessed face of the fly wheel 38 so that this face of the wheel may rest upon the boss 22 with the drums 26, 27 and 28 extending downwardly through the opening 23 of the base plate and through an opening 37 provided in the table or bench 21. The entire unit is thus supported upon the base plate in a manner to permit of the said unit being revolved so as to conveniently reach the bolts 36 so that the magnets 35 and ring gear 34: may be conveniently removed from the fly wheel. In addition, the clutch plates may be removed through an opening 38 provided in the table support, the plates being removed by means of a suitable tool, one of which is indicated at 39 in Figure 20 of the drawings. It is preferred to employ two of these tools and they are provided at one end with a right angled extension 40 for engagement with the clutch plates 32.
For the purpose of supporting the mechanism in position for the removal of the transmission from the fly wheel there. is provided a disk ll which is illustrated in detail in Figure 3 of the drawings. This disk is of a diameter to fit within the opening 23 of the base 20 and rest upon the annular shoulder 24s, the disk being provided with openings 42 which receive the pin 25 and prevent rotation of the disk. The disk jll is provided with spaced sockets 43 which are arr nged concentrically around a central opening 44, these sockets being of a size and number to receive the heads of the bolts 36. The fly wheel is thus held against rotation so that the transmission mechanism may be conveniently removed, the position of the parts being illustrated in Figure 5.
As shown in Figure 6 of the drawings, the disk {11 is provided upon the face opposite that shown in Figure 3 with an annular boss lh and this boss is provided with radially disposed grooves46. In order to disassemble the transmission drums after they have been removed from the fly wheel, the disl: 41 is positioned within the opening 23 of the base with the boss l5 uppermost. The brake drum 26 which is provided with spaced lugs 47 as shown in Figure 7 of the drawingshas these lugs positioned within the grooves at so that the drums will be held against rotation for their convenient separation.
For the purpose of removing and installing the magnets of the magneto, the disk ll is arranged as shown in Figure 5 of the drawings. The fly wheel 33 is then placed upon the base as in Figure 2 of the drawings and the pins l8 or the triple gears 31 which extend downward are received within spaced openings e8 which extend through the. disk ll. This arrangement is illustrated in Figure 9 of the drz wings.
To reassemble the transmission and fly wheel, the fly wheel and magnets are ar-- ranged as shown in Figure 11, the flanged pudSOof the transm ssion shatt 29 resting gpon a centrally located boss 49 provided upon one face Qt: a disk 50. r In oi'd'er to i a cilitate the removal of the bushings from the drums 26, 27 and 28 there is provided an annulus or ring 51 illustrated in Figure 12, 13 and 14;. This annulus .5 provided upon one face with a marginal flange 52 and is of a diameter to rest upon the seat 51 ot' the disk ll. The opposite face of the annulus or ring 51 is provided with a relatively wide marginal flange so that the seat is provided for receiving the end flange-of the drum sleeve 5a. The bushing of this sleeve which is shown at may then be conveniently removed. The drum illustrated in Figure 13 is the slow speed drum 2?.
The ring or annulus 51' shown in Figures 12, 13 and 14: may be reversed from the position shown in Figure 13 and may receive a ring or annulus 56 of a relatively small diameter. This last mentioned ring or annulus is provided upon its opposite face with marginal flanges 57 which form seats 58, one of these seats being ot a diameter to receive the triple gears 59 so that the bushings 60 of the latter may be conveniently removed.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is her"- in reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. lwfieans of the character described comprising a base plate having an opening there l i I in, a disk fitting within and engaging the Walls of the opening and supported by the base plate, said disk having a central opening and spacedfiQQkets in one face thereof around the opening, reversible nested rings having seats in their opposite faces, means providing a removable engagement of the rings within the opening of the disk, a relatively small disk also adapted to be removably supported and engaged by the first mentioned disk and a central boss provided upon one face of the relatively small disk.
2. Means of the character described comprising a base plate having an opening therein, a reversible disk fitting Within and engaging the walls of the opening and supported by the base plate, said disk having a central opening and spaced sockets in one face thereof surrounding the opening and spaced openings extending through the disk, an annular flange surrounding the opening upon the opposite face of the disk, said flange having spaced radially disposed grooves therein, reversible nested rings having seats in their opposite faces, means providing a removable engagement of the rings within the opening of the disk, a relatively small disk also adapted to be removably supported and engaged by the first mentioned disk and a central boss provided upon one face of the relatively small disk.
Means of the character described comprising a base plate having an opening therein, a reversible disk fitting Within and engaging the walls of the opening and sup-- ported by the base plate, said disk having a central opening and spaced sockets in one face thereof surrounding the opening and spaced openings extending through the disk, and an annular flange surrounding the opening upon the opposite face of the disk, said flange having spaced radially disposed grooves therein.
