Abstract

A rainwater attenuation apparatus (10) and method of rainwater attenuation are disclosed. The apparatus (10) includes a vessel (12) for containing a volume of liquid and having an inlet (16) for receiving rainwater from a rainwater collection system (18). There is a first outlet (24) for connection to a surface water sewerage system. The flow of collected rainwater through said first outlet (24) is determined by a remotely controlled first valve (28). A second outlet (56) and tap valve (58) allow the rainwater to be drained for other uses. The vessel (12) is formed from plurality of tubes (50) arranged in a grid formation and connected by a manifold (52). Bundles of partial tube lengths connected end to end to create a significant height and volume of vessel (12)..

Claims (15)

Claims
1. A rainwater attenuation apparatus comprising: a vessel for containing a volume of liquid, having an inlet for receiving rainwater from a rainwater collection system and a first outlet for connection to a sewerage system; and a remotely controlled first valve for controlling the flow of collected rainwater through said first outlet.
2. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said vessel comprises a plurality of tubes.
3. An apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said plurality of tubes are arranged in a grid formation and connected by a manifold.
4. An apparatus according to claim 3, wherein said tubes comprise a plurality of partial tube lengths connected end to end .
5. An apparatus according to any preceding claim, further comprising a second outlet and a second valve for controlling the flow of collected rainwater through said second outlet.
6. An apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said second valve comprises a tap.
7. An apparatus according to claim 5, wherein said second valve comprises a hose connection.
8. An apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, further comprising an overflow.
9. An apparatus according to claim 8, wherein said overflow is connected to said sewerage system.
10. An apparatus according to any preceding claim wherein said remotely controlled first valve is operated via a wireless connection .
11. An apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said wireless connection comprises Wi-Fi.
12. An apparatus according to any preceding claim wherein said first valve comprises a variable opening valve.
13. An apparatus according to claim 12, wherein said variable opening valve has a maximum opening diameter of at least 40mm.
14. A method of rainwater attenuation comprising the steps: providing a plurality of rainwater attenuation apparatus comprising a vessel for containing a volume of liquid, having an inlet for receiving rainwater from a rainwater collection system and a first outlet for connection to a sewerage system and a remotely controlled first valve for controlling the flow of collected rainwater through said first outlet; connecting said apparatuses to a plurality of rainwater collection systems on a plurality of buildings to form a network of attenuation apparatuses; allowing said vessels to fill with rainwater when said remotely controlled valves are closed; in the event of forecast significant rainfall, causing said remotely controlled valves to open to discharge at least a majority of said collected rainwater from said vessel through said first outlet to said sewerage system; and causing said remotely controlled valves too close and allowing said vessel to at least partially refill with rainwater from said forecast rainfall.
15. A method according to claim 14 wherein said first valve comprises a variable opening valve and the method comprises the further step of selecting at least some of said plurality of rainwater attenuation apparatuses and substantially fully opening said variable opening valves.
