Moulding-machines; moulding processes; patterns. - Moulding-machines, for making sand moulds for casting a number of grate-bars, have a pattern-plate 7 and spring-mounted stripping plate 8 moved vertically between side guides 4 by screws 6 which are engaged by nuts 30 formed externally as worm-wheels. The nuts 30 are rotated simultaneously, in either direction, by worms on a shaft 18 on which is feathered a clutch part 21 which can be moved by a handle 24, Fig. 5, to engage either of the bevels 16, 17 driven in opposite directions by the motor 12. The shaft 18 also carries a gear 50 which rotates a nut 51 and causes axial movement of a screwed rod 52, Fig. 5, to operate the handle 24 automatically. The patterns may be mounted on a separate plate 37 which is adapted to enter a recess in the plate 7 to which it is attached by screws. To prevent damage of one mould when forming the next, the patterns are arranged to form impressions for a number of grate-bars 45, Fig. 10, connected by runners 47, and in addition impressions for the first bar or row of bars 145 of the next set. The machine is provided with wheels 9 running on rails 3 so that it can be advanced between each operation and is held, during operation, by clamps 56 closed by a bolt and nut. The plate 7 is preferably cast in steel and with a number of apertures to reduce weight.
