Abstract

259,086. Daynes, H. A., and Cambridge Instrument Co., Ltd. Jan. 22, 1926. Testing and estimating.-The amount of gas held in solution by a liquid is measured by comparing the properties of another gas before and after scrubbing by the gas-bearing liquid. An apparatus is shown for measuring the amount of oxygen dissolved in water, for example feedwater for steam boilers. The water to be tested flows through a pipe 1 to a constant-head device 2 furnished with an overflow 3 which by-passes excess water to waste. Water flows at a constant rate through the pipe 4 and is distributed over a large number of small pieces of nickel in a scrubbing device 5, passing thence through a water seal 6 to waste. Pure hydrogen, generated at the electrode 11 of an electrolytic cell 10, passes through a pipe 13 and divides, one part passing by a pipe 14 to a comparing-device or catharometer 21 and the other part passing by the pipe 15 to the lower gas space 17 of the scrubber, through which it rises in counterflow to the water to be tested and passes by the pipe 18 to the other chamber of the catharometer 21, finally escaping to atmosphere through the pipe 22. The catharometer 21 depends for its operation on the difference of heat conductivity of two different gases, and is described in Specification 124,453. In operation a measured continuous counterflow of pure hydrogen is passed through the scrubber, sweeping out the dissolved oxygen from the water. The combined gases pass to one chamber of the catharometer 21, which indicates the percentage of oxygen therein. The percentage of oxygen originally present in the water under test may therefore be calculated.
