Abstract

Medicines for internal use. - Double salts of aliphatic hydroxy polybasic acids with bismuth and an organic base are prepared by bringing one molecular proportion of the acid into contact with an aqueous solution of a bismuth compound containing one atomic proportion of bismuth and sufficient organic base to produce a soluble product, which may then be precipitated by addition of a non-solvent such as alcohol. Tartaric, citric, and malic acids are specified as examples of aliphatic hydroxy polybasic acids; whilst the bases employed are an aliphatic amine such as diethylamine, an alkylaminoalcohol such 'as diethylaminoethanol, hexamethylenetetramine, or piperazine. The double salts may be made up into solutions, if desired with the addition of a reducing sugar such as glucose, for immediate therapeutic use. Examples of the preparations of solutions are given according to which glucose is added to a neutral aqueous solution of dietaylamine bismuthyl tartrate and the product is then filtered and sterilized.
