Abstract

Armatures and field magnets; exciting; casings; windings. - To facilitate quantity production, the motor and generator for a self-starting, lightang, and charging set for motor vehicles are made as separate machines with interchangeable yoke and pole components adapted to receive field coils appropriate to the respective machine duties. The general arrangement is shown in Fig. 1 in which the motor a is connected to the engine flywheel m<3> through a Bendix drive and the generator d is mounted on the other side of the engine casing m where it is driven by the timer gear m<1>. The motor, Figs. 4 and 5, consists of a tubular yoke 20 carrying the poles 21 and closed at one end by a bracket 22 which is secured to the engine frame and is extended to carry the Bendix drive elements and form an out-bearing for the motor shaft. The other end is closed by a bearing cap 25 having a dust-cap 26 which covers inspection openings in the cap 25. The field coils are connected in series-parallel and the 21-slot armature is wound for series-parallel working with the two sides of each turn respectively at the top and bottom of two slots five slot pitches apart. The generator has an identical yoke and pole structure to the motor and a 21-slot armature with slots adapted for a wire-winding of small section having eleven turns per coil. The field coils, Fig. 9, are shuntwound and regulation is effected by a third brush 41, the holder of which is adjusted during manufacture of the machine for setting the charging rate. Both machines have the same number of commutator segments and armature slots, twentyone in the case shown, and they have a high ratio of main to armature flux to give good commutation. The generator shaft runs in ball bearings carried at one end in an end can as shown at 25 in Fig. 4 and at the other in a short end plate immediately outside of which is the pinion 38, Fig. 1, engaging the main timing-gear m<1>.
