Abstract

A solid cosmetic composition comprising a vegetable butter, sodium bicarbonate and cream of tartar. The vegetable butter may be cocoa butter or illipe butter and preferable makes up 40 to 60 %wt of the composition. The sodium bicarbonate is preferably 10 to 20 % wt of the composition. The cream of tartar is preferably 8 to 18 %wt of the composition. The composition may further comprise a surfactant, such as a polyoxyether of lauryl alcohol (e.g. Laureth 4). The composition may further comprise one or more of a colouring, binder, filler, perfume or decorative item. The cosmetic composition may be a bathing product. Also discussed is a process for the production of said solid cosmetic composition where the vegetable butter is melted and is then contacted with the sodium bicarbonate and cream of tartar. The mixture is then allowed to set. Also discussed is a cosmetic method of contacting the skin of a user with bathing water containing the solid composition.

Description

COMPOSITION
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a solid cosmetic product, a process for producing said product, and a product prepared by the method.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to products particularly those for use in contact with the human body.
Therapeutic bathing products are known in the cosmetic industry and are available in a variety of different forms. Bath salts, oils, and lotions are a few examples of bathing products that can deliver emollients, essential oils and fragrances to a bath, providing calming and remedial properties. However, the required use of solid packaging for these products is a significant disadvantage due to the environmental impact that waste packaging has, despite the availability of recycling.
For at least this reason encapsulated compositions for creating therapeutic bath products have become increasingly popular. For example US 4,294,855 and WO 03/061633 disclose compositions which are capable of enveloping a core cosmetic. The active therapeutic components are often encased in a gelatinous or membrane-bound shell, which dissolves on contact with water, releasing the core ingredients into the water.
However the disadvantage of these products is that the shell does not readily dissipate in water, delaying the release of the active ingredients, whilst providing no effective benefit of its own. They are also prone to rupturing, resulting in a wasted and suboptimal product.
In response to these problems, the present applicant provided the solid cosmetic 30 compositions of GB2492139 and W02016/170334. These products have been commercially successful but sometimes are prone to becoming soft or even melting during storage.
The present invention seeks to provide a solid cosmetic product that may be used as a therapeutic bathing product and is capable of delivering a concentrated dose of emollients, essential oils and/or fragrances with an enhanced experience for the user. The present invention further seeks to provide a solid cosmetic product which has a degree of hardness which assists in handling and storage prior to use. Furthermore, the present invention seeks to provide a solid cosmetic product delivering a further improved experience for the user.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In one aspect there is provided a solid cosmetic composition comprising (a) vegetable butter; (b) sodium bicarbonate; and (c) cream of tartar.
In one aspect there is provided a process for the production of a solid cosmetic composition as defined herein comprising the steps of: (i) melting vegetable butter; (ii) contacting the melted vegetable butter with the sodium bicarbonate and cream of tartar; and (iii) allowing the mixture of step (ii) to solidify.
In one aspect there is provided a product obtained or obtainable by a process as described herein.
In one aspect there is provided a cosmetic method comprising contacting the skin of a user with bathing water containing a solid cosmetic composition as described herein.
For ease of reference, these and further aspects of the present invention are now discussed under appropriate section headings. However, the teachings under each section are not necessarily limited to each particular section.
Advantages We have identified that by providing a solid cosmetic composition as described herein, a composition is prepared which more firmly holds its form and does not readily melt prior to use. By virtue of this property, it is possible to more easily sell the product without unnecessary packaging. In particular, retail environments require that products be displayed or stored by stacking. This stacking can be compromised by even slight melting of the periphery of the product. Even slight melting may result in adjoining products adhering to each other on solidification of the melt. Furthermore, the melting may result in bleeding' of colours between adjoining products. A further disadvantage of a product which melts too readily is that consumers may find them unpleasant to handle. Furthermore, even slight melting may be felt by consumers to be undesirable since the product may contact items such as clothing which may be marked with the product. We have found that by including sodium bicarbonate and cream of tartar in the present product, a product of suitable solidity may be delivered.
We have also found that the presence of sodium bicarbonate and cream of tartar provides an efficient means of melting and then dispersing the vegetable butter when the product is placed in bath water. In particular, this combination of sodium bicarbonate and cream of tartar effervesces on contact with water. The cosmetic product may be added to the bath after filling and still be disbursed effectively so that the user benefits from the cosmetic properties of the vegetable butter. For example with the present product, once a bath has been run the product may be added to the water. This may be before or after the user has immersed themselves in the bath. On contact with water these two materials combine to create and liberate carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide liberated from within the product "breaks up" the surface of the product allowing for further ingress of water and dispersion of the butter from the surface of the product into the bathwater.
The specific combination of sodium bicarbonate and cream of tartar is advantageous over prior art effervescent systems because we have found that this particular effervescent combination maintains the vibrancy or strength of colours included in the solid cosmetic product. This is in contrast to prior art systems such as GB2492139.
Consequently, we have found that the specific combination of sodium bicarbonate and cream of tartar, together with the required vegetable butter, delivers a system which is suitably solid to allow for simplified retailing without the need for packaging, readily effervesces to disperse the vegetable butter in bathwater and also maintains the vibrancy of colours included in the product.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Composition As discussed herein, in one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a solid cosmetic composition comprising (a) vegetable butter; (b) sodium bicarbonate; and (c) cream of tartar.
It will be understood by one skilled in the art that the nature of a cosmetic product means that the product is not edible. Thus in a further aspect the present invention provides a non-edible solid cosmetic composition comprising (a) vegetable butter; (b) sodium bicarbonate; and (c) cream of tartar.
The solid products of the present invention are compositions which can substantially sustain their physical shape when unsupported by external means, e.g. packaging etc. Thus, they are considered to be solid, solid-like, in solid form or in solid-like form at room temperature. For the avoidance of doubt the solid product must remain substantially solid at up to 30°C.
By solid-like, it is understood that some materials are considered on a day to day basis to be solid, yet over an extremely long period of time, may alter in shape, e.g. amorphous materials such as glass etc. However, they are considered to be solid-like as, for the purpose they fulfil, they are solid.
Due to the solid form of the compositions of the present invention, external packaging is not required to maintain the shape of the composition.
The present invention provides a cosmetic product which is solid. The vegetable butters incorporated into the solid product are typically used as agents in bath products. The solid cosmetic composition of the present invention is typically a bath product.
