Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a solid cosmetic product, a process for producing said product, and a product prepared by the method.
  • the present invention relates to products particularly those for use in contact with the human body.
  • Bath Bomb type products may be considered a form of bath salt as they typically comprises at least one salt of carbonic acid, and at least one acidifying agent.
  • Bath bomb When a bath bomb is placed into water, it vigorously effervesces releasing carbon dioxide. The reaction is an acid-base reaction resulting in the production of a salt, carbon dioxide and water.
  • Other more recent solid products, particularly those developed by the present applicant include solid shower gels, solid shampoos, solid hair conditioners, solid hair dye, solid body lotions, solid massage bars, shower jellies, solid moisturisers, solid body scrubs, solid bubble bars for creating bubble baths, solid sunscreens, and solid make-up. While many of these products address the issue of avoiding unnecessary packaging, and while many of them have their own unique user experiences, there is a desire to improve the user experience.
  • the present invention seeks to provide a solid cosmetic product which provides an enhanced experience for the user.
  • a solid cosmetic product comprising
  • a process for the production of a solid cosmetic product as defined herein comprising the steps of: i) preparing the zinc sulphide containing component in one or more pieces and preparing the solid cosmetic component; ii) (a) enveloping the one or more pieces of zinc sulphide containing component with the solid cosmetic component; or
  • a cosmetic method comprising contacting the skin of a user with a solid cosmetic product as described herein.
  • a user of a solid cosmetic product may be provided with a desirable product in which the solid cosmetic component provides the cosmetic effect for which the product has been purchased and the zinc sulphide containing component provides an enhanced visual effect.
  • the zinc sulphide containing component either becomes exposed during use (when surrounded by the solid cosmetic component) or is present on the surface of the solid cosmetic component, the zinc sulphide containing component will be illuminated by light present in the environment. This will cause the luminescent zinc sulphide in the zinc sulphide containing component to ‘glow’.
  • This glow may be more apparent if the illuminating light is then reduced, for example by turning off an artificial light.
  • the user will be provided with components in the cosmetic product which ‘glow-in- the-dark’. This provides an enhanced user experience.
  • This user experience can be enhanced further with thematic products such as Halloween products.
  • some glow-in-the-dark products are known, the dual effect of the solid cosmetic component effervescing and the separate glowing component, produces a highly appealing visual display.
  • a solid cosmetic product comprising
  • a cosmetic product means that the product is not edible.
  • a non edible solid cosmetic product comprising (i) a zinc sulphide containing component comprising
  • the solid products of the present invention are compositions which can substantially sustain their physical shape when unsupported by external means, e.g. packaging etc. Thus, they are considered to be solid, solid-like, in solid form or in solid-like form at room temperature. For the avoidance of doubt the solid product must remain substantially solid at up to 30°C.
  • solid-like it is understood that some materials are considered on a day to day basis to be solid, yet over an extremely long period of time, may alter in shape, e.g. amorphous materials such as glass etc. However, they are considered to be solid-like as, for the purpose they fulfil, they are solid.
  • composition of the present invention is typically made by moulding of the product.

Description

SOLID COSMETIC COMPOSITION COMPRISING LUMINESCENT ZINC SULPHIDE
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a solid cosmetic product, a process for producing said product, and a product prepared by the method.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to products particularly those for use in contact with the human body.
In the modern era, a high proportion of cosmetic products are typically provided to consumers in the form of liquid or pastes. For example, hair styling products are typically provided as hair gels or pastes, which require packaging in order to transport and store said products. Oral care (or oral hygiene) products, such as toothpastes and mouthwashes, are also either provided in paste or liquid form, thus requiring some form of external packaging. They are sold in containers to the end user and may be dispensed by the end user. However, the required use of packaging is a disadvantage. From an environmental perspective, waste packaging is a significant problem, despite the availability of recycling.
There is also a desire to provide more ‘exciting’ products which add to the bathing, cleansing and/or grooming experience of a user. In other words, there is a desire to provide products which offer to the user more than the functional delivery of a cosmetically active agent.
One popular cosmetic product which is both solid and provides a more ‘exciting’ product than its predecessor is the Bath Bomb. Bath bomb type products may be considered a form of bath salt as they typically comprises at least one salt of carbonic acid, and at least one acidifying agent. When a bath bomb is placed into water, it vigorously effervesces releasing carbon dioxide. The reaction is an acid-base reaction resulting in the production of a salt, carbon dioxide and water. Other more recent solid products, particularly those developed by the present applicant include solid shower gels, solid shampoos, solid hair conditioners, solid hair dye, solid body lotions, solid massage bars, shower jellies, solid moisturisers, solid body scrubs, solid bubble bars for creating bubble baths, solid sunscreens, and solid make-up. While many of these products address the issue of avoiding unnecessary packaging, and while many of them have their own unique user experiences, there is a desire to improve the user experience.
The present invention seeks to provide a solid cosmetic product which provides an enhanced experience for the user.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
In a first aspect, there is provided a solid cosmetic product comprising
(i) a zinc sulphide containing component comprising
(a) a carrier material; and
(b) luminescent zinc sulphide;
(ii) a solid cosmetic component; wherein the solid cosmetic component and the zinc sulphide containing component are distinct from each other.
In a second aspect, there is provided a process for the production of a solid cosmetic product as defined herein comprising the steps of: i) preparing the zinc sulphide containing component in one or more pieces and preparing the solid cosmetic component; ii) (a) enveloping the one or more pieces of zinc sulphide containing component with the solid cosmetic component; or
(b) applying the one or more pieces of zinc sulphide containing component to the outside of the solid cosmetic component.
In a third aspect, there is provided a product obtained or obtainable by a process as described herein.
In a fourth aspect, there is provided a cosmetic method comprising contacting the skin of a user with a solid cosmetic product as described herein.
For ease of reference, these and further aspects of the present invention are now discussed under appropriate section headings. However, the teachings under each section are not necessarily limited to each particular section. Advantages
It has been found that in the solid cosmetic product of the present invention in which there is provided zinc sulphide containing component and a solid cosmetic component, a user of a solid cosmetic product may be provided with a desirable product in which the solid cosmetic component provides the cosmetic effect for which the product has been purchased and the zinc sulphide containing component provides an enhanced visual effect. In particular, in use the zinc sulphide containing component either becomes exposed during use (when surrounded by the solid cosmetic component) or is present on the surface of the solid cosmetic component, the zinc sulphide containing component will be illuminated by light present in the environment. This will cause the luminescent zinc sulphide in the zinc sulphide containing component to ‘glow’. This glow may be more apparent if the illuminating light is then reduced, for example by turning off an artificial light. Thus, the user will be provided with components in the cosmetic product which ‘glow-in- the-dark’. This provides an enhanced user experience. This user experience can be enhanced further with thematic products such as Halloween products. Although some glow-in-the-dark products are known, the dual effect of the solid cosmetic component effervescing and the separate glowing component, produces a highly appealing visual display.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Composition
As discussed herein, in one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a solid cosmetic product comprising
(i) a zinc sulphide containing component comprising
(a) a carrier material; and
(b) luminescent zinc sulphide;
(ii) a solid cosmetic component; wherein the solid cosmetic component and the zinc sulphide containing component are distinct from each other.
It will be understood by one skilled in the art that the nature of a cosmetic product means that the product is not edible. Thus in a further aspect the present invention provides a non edible solid cosmetic product comprising (i) a zinc sulphide containing component comprising
(a) a carrier material; and
(b) luminescent zinc sulphide;
(ii) a solid cosmetic component; wherein the solid cosmetic component and the zinc sulphide containing component are distinct from each other.
The solid products of the present invention are compositions which can substantially sustain their physical shape when unsupported by external means, e.g. packaging etc. Thus, they are considered to be solid, solid-like, in solid form or in solid-like form at room temperature. For the avoidance of doubt the solid product must remain substantially solid at up to 30°C.
By solid-like, it is understood that some materials are considered on a day to day basis to be solid, yet over an extremely long period of time, may alter in shape, e.g. amorphous materials such as glass etc. However, they are considered to be solid-like as, for the purpose they fulfil, they are solid.
Due to the solid form of the compositions of the present invention, external packaging is not required to maintain the shape of the composition.
The composition of the present invention is typically made by moulding of the product. In a typical process, both the solid cosmetic component and the zinc sulphide containing component are prepared and contacted with each other. Two possible methods are as follows.
In one aspect the zinc sulphide containing component is in one or more distinct pieces which are entirely enveloped by the solid cosmetic component. In one aspect the zinc sulphide containing component is a single piece which is entirely enveloped by the solid cosmetic component.
In one preferred aspect the zinc sulphide containing component is in one or more distinct pieces disposed on the outside of the solid cosmetic component. In one preferred aspect the zinc sulphide containing component is in multiple distinct pieces disposed on the outside of the solid cosmetic component. Zinc sulphide containinq component
As discussed herein, the zinc sulphide containing component comprises (a) a carrier material; and (b) luminescent zinc sulphide.
The carrier material contained in the zinc sulphide containing component may be any suitable carrier material.
In one aspect the zinc sulphide containing component floats on water at 37°C. In this aspect, the carrier material contained in the zinc sulphide containing component may be any suitable carrier material selected to achieve the requirement that the zinc sulphide containing component floats on water at 37°C. One skilled in the art would readily understand how to select a necessary carrier material. In particular, one skilled in the art would understand to select a carrier material which either itself has a density of less than 0.993g/cm3 at 37°C or is in a form such that it provides a solid having a density of less than 0.993g/cm3 at 37°C. An example of the latter would be a material which may have a density of greater than 0.993g/cm3 at 37°C but which has been aerated to provide an overall density of less than 0.993g/cm3 at 37°C. It is noted that water has a density of 0.99336g/cm3 at 37°C.
In one aspect the carrier material has a density of less than 0.6g/cm3 at 37°C. In one aspect the carrier material has a density of less than 0.65g/cm3 at 37°C. In one aspect the carrier material has a density of less than 0.7g/cm3 at 37°C. In one aspect the carrier material has a density of less than 0.75g/cm3 at 37°C. In one aspect the carrier material has a density of less than 0.8g/cm3 at 37°C. In one aspect the carrier material has a density of less than 0.85g/cm3 at 37°C. In one aspect the carrier material has a density of less than 0.9g/cm3 at 37°C. In one aspect the carrier material has a density of less than 0.993g/cm3 at 37°C.
In one aspect the zinc sulphide containing component has a density of less than 0.6g/cm3 at 37°C. In one aspect the zinc sulphide containing component has a density of less than 0.65g/cm3 at 37°C. In one aspect the zinc sulphide containing component has a density of less than 0.7g/cm3 at 37°C. In one aspect the zinc sulphide containing component has a density of less than 0.75g/cm3 at 37°C. In one aspect the zinc sulphide containing component has a density of less than 0.8g/cm3 at 37°C. In one aspect the zinc sulphide containing component has a density of less than 0.85g/cm3 at 37°C. In one aspect the zinc sulphide containing component has a density of less than 0.9g/cm3 at 37°C. In one aspect the zinc sulphide containing component has a density of less than 0.993g/cm3 at 37°C.
In one aspect the carrier material may be selected such that it remains solid in the bathing water. Thus, in one aspect the carrier material has a melting point of at least 37°C. In one aspect the carrier material has a melting point of at least 40°C. In one aspect the carrier material has a melting point of at least 45°C. In one aspect the carrier material has a melting point of at least 50°C. In one aspect the carrier material has a melting point of at least 55°C. In one aspect the carrier material has a melting point of at least 60°C. Although some of these temperatures are significantly higher than a safe temperature for bathing water, the melting point of the carrier material may be selected to allow for a user to run bathing water which is too hot, place the solid cosmetic product in the bathing water, and then allow the bathing water to cool before use.
In one aspect the carrier material is selected from waxes, paper, wood, bark, sponge, plastics, soaps, synthetic detergents, vegetable butters, clays and mixtures thereof. In one aspect the carrier material is selected from waxes, paper, wood, bark, sponge and mixtures thereof.
We have found that waxes are particularly advantageous as carrier materials. In particular, these materials may have suitably high melting points and have densities low enough to allow the incorporation of significant amounts of zinc sulphide before the density of the overall zinc sulphide containing component becomes greater than 0.993g/cm3 at 37°C. It is noted that the density of zinc sulphide is approximately 4g/cm3. In one aspect there is provided a solid cosmetic product wherein the carrier material is selected from waxes and mixtures thereof.
Waxes for use in the present invention may be selected from any suitable waxes. In one aspect the waxes are selected from carnauba wax, castor wax, Fischer-Tropsch wax, hydrogenated castor oil, soy wax, pillar wax, carnauba wax, sunflower wax, hard sunflower wax, candelilla wax, coconut wax, rapeseed wax, soft rapeseed wax, rice bran wax, japan wax, berry wax, beeswax, shellac wax and mixtures thereof.
In one aspect the carrier material is at least soy wax. In one aspect the carrier material contains waxes selected from soy wax. In one aspect the carrier material consists essentially of soy wax. In one aspect the carrier material consists of soy wax. Zinc sulphide, with addition of a suitable activator, exhibits luminescence. Luminescent zinc sulphide is currently used in many applications, including cathode ray tubes, X-ray screens and glow in the dark products. When silver is used as activator, the resulting colour is bright blue, at around 450 nanometers. Using manganese yields an orange-red colour at around 590 nanometers. Copper gives long lasting greenish glow. In one aspect the luminescent zinc sulphide is copper doped zinc sulphide.
The zinc sulphide containing component may contain luminescent zinc sulphide is any suitable amount. Carbon dioxide effervescent component
In one aspect the solid cosmetic component is a carbon dioxide effervescent component comprising
(a) a salt of carbonic acid; and
(b) an acidifying agent.
In this aspect preferably the zinc containing component floats on water at 37°C.
Thus in further aspects, the present invention provides:
(1) a solid cosmetic product comprising
(i) a zinc sulphide containing component comprising
(a) a carrier material; and
(b) luminescent zinc sulphide; wherein the zinc sulphide containing component floats on water at 37°C;
(ii) a carbon dioxide effervescent component comprising
(a) a salt of carbonic acid; and
(b) an acidifying agent; wherein the carbon dioxide effervescent component and the zinc sulphide containing component are distinct from each other.
(2) a process for the production of a solid cosmetic product as defined in aspect (1) comprising the steps of: i) preparing the zinc sulphide containing component in one or more pieces and preparing the carbon dioxide effervescent component; ii) (a) enveloping the one or more pieces of zinc sulphide containing component with the carbon dioxide effervescent component; or
(b) applying the one or more pieces of zinc sulphide containing component to the outside of the carbon dioxide effervescent component.
(3) a product obtained or obtainable by a process as described in aspect (2).
(4) a cosmetic method comprising contacting the skin of a user with a solid cosmetic product as described in aspect (1) or aspect (3). It has been found that in these aspects once the solid cosmetic product of the present invention is added to water (such as bathing water) the carbon dioxide effervescent component will effervesce, as seen with the majority of commercially available bath bombs. As the zinc sulphide containing component either becomes exposed (when surrounded by the carbon dioxide effervescent component) or is present on the surface of the carbon dioxide effervescent component, the zinc sulphide containing component will be illuminated by light present in the bathing environment, such as a bathroom. This will cause the luminescent zinc sulphide in the zinc sulphide containing component to ‘glow’. This glow may be more apparent if the illuminating light is then reduced, for example by turning off a bathroom light. Thus, the user will be provided with components in the cosmetic product which ‘glow-in-the-dark’. This provides an enhanced user experience. This user experience can be enhanced further with thematic products such as Halloween products. Although some glow-in-the-dark products are known, the dual effect of the carbon dioxide effervescent component effervescing and the separate glowing component, produces a highly appealing visual display. Furthermore, the presence of additional components may simultaneously introduce remedial and therapeutic ingredients into a bath.
As the carbon dioxide effervescent component dissolves, the zinc sulphide containing component is ‘released’ to float freely in the bathing water. Consequently, the visual effects provided by the present invention continue after the complete dissolution of the carbon dioxide effervescent product. The floating zinc sulphide containing component remains on the bathing water surface for the duration of the bathing experience. After the bath the user may even retain the released zinc sulphide containing component and place them in future baths
The invention produces visual stimulation to the user that provides relaxation and therapeutic effects. This is in addition to any bathing effects.
