Abstract

258,163. Green, I. C., Kirk, G. L., and Rebbeck, F. E. Feb. 25, 1926. Dashpots, applications of.-A spring- loaded automatic check or non-return valve particularly applicable for use as an air inlet valve on heavy oil engines is fitted with an atmospheric dash-pot arranged at a distance from the valve and provided with means for increasing the area of the leak orifice as the valve opens. The valve member A co-operates with a seat C and is connected by a, spindle to a piston E loaded by a spring D and arranged to work in a cylinder F having a port J in a cover M leading to the atmosphere. A throttling member G adapted to pass through the orifice J is secured to the piston and has cylindrical and conical parts so arranged that for small openings of the valve the larger cylindrical part does not leave the orifice, while for larger openings the tapered part comes into operation to permit a more rapid flow of air. The orifice J may be formed in a bush adjustably secured to the cover, and the throttling member may be secured to the piston by a cap nut to allow limited transverse movement.
