MASKING AID FOR USE IN HAIRDRESSING
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a masking aid for use in hairdressing, in particular to a masking aid for masking selected strands of hair from other strands of hair while the selected strands of hair are being treated, more particularly to a balayage meche.
Background of the Invention
A masking aid is usable in hairdressing to mask strands of hair that are not being treated from strands of hair that are being treated.
A known type of masking aid, for masking selected strands of hair from other strands of hair while the selected strands of hair are being treated, comprises a cap that defines a plurality of apertures through which strands of hair can be drawn using a tool having a hooked end, with the cap masking the remaining hair while the strands of hair projecting through the cap are treated. One problem experienced with this type of masking aid is discomfort experienced by the client wearing the cap, in particular as the hairdresser is drawing strands of hair through the cap.
Another known type of hairdresser’s masking aid comprises a pair of panels of a flexible sheet material, one of the pair of panels being provided with adhesive for temporarily securing the pair of panels to strands of hair and the pair of panels pivotable about a hinge so that they can be opened apart to receive selected strands of hair therebetween and closed together to envelope the selected strands of hair, the pair of panels masking the remaining hair while the strands of hair between the pair of panels are treated. One problem experienced with this type of masking aid is that the adhesive is typically of a type that becomes ineffective when brought into contact with many of the substances used to treat hair, which results in the masking aid slipping from the desired position on the hair.
A further known type of hairdresser’s masking aid comprises a metal foil strip, which has the ability to be dead-folded around selected strands of hair to form an envelope.
One problem experienced with this type of masking aid is that the masking aid is opaque, which prevents the hairdresser from visually monitoring the progress of the treatment process without opening and reclosing the envelope.
International Patent Publication NO. WO 2007/141544 Al discloses a hairdresser’s masking aid comprising at least two panels of flexible sheet material which are capable of being hinged between an open apart condition and a closed together condition, in which at least one of the panels comprises a substrate of a flexible and transparent plastics material laminated over at least part of its area to a metal foil substrate by a laminating wax so that the resultant laminated sheet is capable of being dead-folded.
A masking aid may be used when hair is to be treated by one of a number of different processes, which may involve one or both of lightening or darkening the colour of the hair. Different hair colouring techniques include balayage, in which dye is painted onto the hair. This may be used to create a graduation of colour between the roots and the ends of the hair.
It is desirable to provide a hairdressing masking aid for use in balayage.

Description
Example embodiments are described below in sufficient detail to enable those of ordinary skill in the art to embody and implement the apparatus, systems and processes described herein. It is to be understood that embodiments can be provided in many alternate forms and the invention should not be construed as limited to the specific embodiments and examples set forth herein but by the scope of the appended claims.
A masking aid 101 according to a first example is shown in Figures I and 2. The masking aid 101 is suitable for use in hairdressing, in particular for masking selected strands of hair from other strands of hair while the selected strands of hair are being treated.
The masking aid 101 comprises a first panel portion 102 for providing a substrate for strands of hair to be treated and a second panel portion 103 for overlying the first panel portion.
The first and second panel portions 102, 103 are foldable about a fold axis 104 between an open condition, illustrated in Figure I, and a closed condition, illustrated in Figure 2, as indicated by arrow 105.
As will be described in further detail below, when in the open condition, strands of hair can be received between the first and second panel portions 102, 103, and the first and second panel portions 102, 103 can then be moved into the closed condition to envelop the received strands of hair.
The second panel portion 103 is foldable relative to the first panel portion 102 about the fold axis 104, which allows the second panel portion 103 to be opened away from and closed towards the first panel portion 102.
A slot 106 is defined proximate the fold axis 104, which allows strands of hair to be received therethrough for location between an obverse surface 107 of the first panel portion 102 and a reverse surface 108 of the second panel portion 103.
A masking template 109 is defined by the second panel portion 102 for partially covering the first panel portion 102 when the second panel portion 103 overlies the first panel portion 102.
Thus, strands of hair extending through the slot 106 and extending along the obverse surface 107 of the first panel portion 102 may be partially covered by the second panel portion 103 when it is closed towards the first panel portion 102. Preferably, at least the second panel portion 103 is transparent, to enable a hairdresser to monitor the progress of a bleaching/colouring process being carried out on strands of hair received by the masking aid 101.
According to this illustrated embodiment, proximate ends 110, III of the first and second panel portions 102, 103 respectively are contiguous along each of a pair of adjoined edge sections 112, 113, the slot 106 is disposed intermediate the pair of adjoined edge sections 112, 113, and the fold axis 104 extends through the slot 105 and through the pair of adjoined edge sections 112, 113.
In the present embodiment, each of the first and second panel portions 102, 103 comprises a sheet of a flexible plastics material. In an example, the flexible plastics material is polycarbonate (PC). In an example, the flexible plastics material has a thickness of approximately l20pm. In an example, the flexible plastics material is transparent.
Each of the first and second panel portions 102, 103 and the slot 106 may have any suitable shape. According to this illustrated example, the first panel portion 102 has a substantially rectangular shape. According to this illustrated example also, the slot 106 has a substantially rectangular shape.
In the present illustrated example, the second panel portion 102 comprises a silhouette element I 14 that provides the masking profile 109. The silhouette element I 14 outlines a solid shape I 15.
Referring to Figure 2, when the first and second panel portions 102, 103 are in the closed condition, the second panel portion 103 overlies the first panel portion 102 and overlies strands of hair received therebetween, with the masking template 109 defining covered and uncovered areas of the obverse surface 107 of the first panel portion 102. In this first example, the covered area coincides with the solid shape I 15 defined by the second panel portion 103. Strands of hair exposed within the uncovered areas are accessible for treatment, with strands of hair within the covered areas being masked.
In the specific example shown in Figures I and 2, the shape I 15 outlined by the silhouette element I 14 presents a plurality of triangular points, 201, 202, 203. In the shown arrangement, the plurality of triangular points, 201, 202, 203 comprises a central triangular point 201 disposed between a pair of outer triangular points 202, 203 that are sized differently than the central triangular point 201.
It is to be appreciated that a silhouette element providing a masking template of a masking aid as described herein may outline any suitable shape of any suitable dimensions.
Preferably, at least the obverse surface 107 of the first panel portion 102 carries a region of adhesive. In this illustrated example, both the obverse surface 107 of the first panel portion 102 and the reverse surface 108 of the second panel portion 103 supports a region of adhesive. Preferably, and in this specific example, the solid surface areas of the obverse surface 107 of the first panel portion 102 and the reverse surface of the second panel portion 103 are supplied with adhesive all over. The layer of adhesive between the first and second panel portions 102, 103 functions to prevent dripping of a treatment agent, for example bleach, from the masking aid 101. The adhesive may also assist in maintaining hair received within the masking aid 101 in a desired position.
The adhesive may be any suitable type of adhesive. A release layer may be provided over the adhesive. In an example, the adhesive is a thermal adhesive. The thermal adhesive may be of a type used to laminate paper documents between sheets of plastic.
The first panel portion 102 may have a dimension of 43 cm in a length direction I 16 and a dimension of 10 cm in a width direction I 17. The second panel portion 103 may have a dimension of 10 cm in the width direction I 17. The central triangular point 201 may have a dimension of 4 cm in the width direction I 17 and a dimension of 18 cm in the length direction. Each of the outer triangular points 202, 203 may have a dimension of 2 cm in the width direction I 17 and a dimension of 12 cm in the length direction. The slot 106 may have a dimension of 8 cm in the width direction I 17 and a dimension of I mm in the length direction. Thus, the masking aid 101 may have a dimension of 55 cm in the length direction I 16 when the first and second panel portions 102, 103 are in the fully open condition shown in Figure I, and a dimension of 43 cm in the length direction I 16 when the first and second panel portions 102, 103 are in the fully closed condition shown in Figure 2.
A masking aid 301 according to a second example is shown in Figures 3 and 4. The masking aid 101 is suitable for use in hairdressing, in particular for masking selected strands of hair from other strands of hair while the selected strands of hair are being treated.
The masking aid 301 of Figures 3 and 4 is similar to the masking aid 101 of Figures I and 2 and is shown in an open condition in Figure 3 and a closed condition in Figure 4.
Masking aid 301 comprises a first panel portion 302 for providing a substrate for strands of hair to be treated, and a second panel portion 303 for overlying the first panel portion 302. The second panel portion 303 is foldable relative to the first panel portion 302 about a fold axis 304 for allowing the second panel portion 303 to be opened away from and closed towards the first panel portion 302, as indicated by arrow 305. A slot 306 is defined proximate the fold axis 304 for receiving strands of hair therethrough for location between obverse and reverse surfaces 307, 308 of the first and second panel portions 302, 303 respectively. A masking template 309 is defined by the second panel portion 303 for partially covering the first panel portion 302 when the second panel portion 303 overlies the first panel portion 302.
The masking template 309 of the masking aid 301 of Figures 3 and 4 differs from the masking template 109 of the masking aid 101 of Figures I and 2.
The first and second panel portions 302, 303 of masking aid 301 have the same overall shape and the same overall dimensions. In this illustrated example, both of the first and second panel portions 302, 303 have the same substantially rectangular shape, and have a perimeter of the same dimensions.
Thus, the masking aid 301 has a dimension in the length direction 318 when the first and second panel portions 303, 303 are in the fully open condition shown in Figure 3 that is twice the dimension in the length direction 3 18 when the first and second panel portions 302, 303 are in the fully closed condition shown in Figure 2.
In the present illustrated example, the second panel portion 302 comprises a stencil element 310 that provides the masking profile 309. In the specific example shown in Figures 3 and 4, the stencil element 310 defines a plurality of apertures, such as discrete apertures 31 1-316.
Similar to the masking aid 101 of Figures I and 2, preferably at least the obverse surface 307 of the first panel portion 302 carries a region of adhesive. In this illustrated example, both the obverse surface 307 of the first panel portion 302 and the reverse surface 308 of the second panel portion 303 supports a region of adhesive.
Referring to Figure 4, when the first and second panel portions 202, 303 are in the closed condition, the second panel portion 303 overlies the first panel portion 302 and overlies strands of hair received therebetween, with the masking template 309 defining covered areas and uncovered areas of the obverse surface 307 of the first panel portion 302. In this second example, the uncovered areas coincide with the apertures 31 1-316 defined in the second panel portion 303. Strands of hair exposed within the uncovered areas are accessible for treatment, with strands of hair within the covered areas being masked.
In the shown arrangement, each of the plurality of apertures 31 1-316 has a dimension in a width direction 3 17 of the masking aid 301 that is less than a dimension in a length direction 318 of the masking aid 301. The plurality of apertures 31 1-316 comprises three pairs of apertures, with a central pair of apertures 313, 314 and outer pairs of apertures 311,312 and 315, 316, the apertures of each pair of apertures being aligned in the width direction 317 and having the same dimension in the width direction 317 but different dimensions in the length direction 318. In the shown arrangement, the central pair of apertures 313, 314 have a first dimension in the width direction 3 17 and the outer pairs of apertures 311, 312 and 315, 316 have a second dimension in the width direction 3 17 that is less than the first dimension.
It is to be appreciated that a stencil element providing a masking template of a masking aid as described herein may define any suitable number of apertures, the or each aperture having any suitable shape and dimensions. A stencil element providing a masking template of a masking aid as described herein may define a plurality of apertures in any suitable arrangement.
A covering for a masking aid as described hereinbefore may also be provided. The covering may comprise a panel for overlying the second panel portion when the second panel portion overlies the first panel portion.
A covering 501 for a masking aid as described herein is shown in Figures 5 and 6. The covering 501 is shown in Figure 5 on its own and is shown in Figure 6 in use with masking aid 101 of Figures I and 2; however, it is to be appreciated that although reference will be made hereinafter to use of the covering 501 for the masking aid 101 of the first example, it is to be appreciated that the covering 501 may be used with the masking aid 301 of the second example or with a masking aid as described herein according to an alternative example.
According to the present embodiment, the covering 501 comprises a panel 502. In an example, the panel 502 comprises a sheet of a flexible plastics material. In an example, the flexible plastics material is polyethylene terephthalate (PET). In an example, flexible plastics material has a thickness of approximately 6 pm. Preferably, the flexible plastics material is transparent. This enables a hairdresser to monitor the progress of a bleaching/colouring process being carried out on strands of hair beneath the panel 502.
A different type of flexible plastics material may thus be used for the panel 502 than is used for the first and second panel portions 102, 103 of masking aid 101.
According to the present example, the panel 502 supports a plurality of elongate strips of metal foil, such as strips of metal foil 503-505, laminated to the sheet of flexible plastics material, the elongate strips of metal foil 503-505 having a dimension in a width direction 506 of the panel 502 that is greater than a dimension in a length direction 507 of the panel 502, the strips of metal foil 503-505 spaced apart in the length direction 507 of the panel 502 and arranged to extend parallel to one another.
According to the specific arrangement shown, the plurality of elongate strips of metal foil 503-505 comprises a first strip of metal foil 503 located along a first 508 of a pair of opposed ends 508, 509 of the panel 502, a second strip of metal foil 504 located along the second 507 of the pair of opposed ends 508, 509 of the panel 502 and a third elongate strip of metal foil 504 located between the first and second elongate strips of metal foil 503, 505. In this example, the third elongate strip of metal foil 504 is located equidistantly between the first and second elongate strips of metal foil 503, 505.
In an example, the metal foil is aluminium foil. In an example, the aluminium foil has a thickness of approximately 14 pm.
The plurality of elongate strips of metal foil 503-505 allow the panel 502 to be deadfolded.
The panel 502 is dimensioned to fully cover the masking aid 101 when in the closed condition.
The panel 502 may have a dimension of 43 cm in the length direction 507 and a dimension of 10 cm in the width direction 506. Each of the elongate strips of metal foil 503-505 may have a dimension of 4 cm in the length direction 507 and a dimension of 10 cm in the width direction 506.
Figure 6 shows the masking aid 101 and covering 501 in use during treatment of selected strands of hair, indicated generally as 601.
Steps in a method of use of the masking aid 101 and covering 501 will now be described.
Initially, the masking aid 101 is brought towards the hair to be treated, with the obverse surface 107 of the first panel portion 102 facing away from the hair. With the second panel portion 103 opened apart from the first panel portion 102, selected strands of hair 601 are drawn through the slot 106. The second panel portion 103 is then closed towards the first panel portion 102 to envelop the selected strands of hair 601; however, some areas of the selected strands of hair 601 are masked beneath the second panel portion 103 and some other areas of the selected strands of hair 601 are exposed to receive a treatment agent, such as bleach or dye. The masking aid 101 also masks areas of strands of hair underneath the first panel portion 302. A treatment agent may now be applied to the selected strands of hair 601. Following the application of the treatment agent, the covering 501 may then be positioned over the second panel portion 103, to cover the treated selected strands of hair 601.
As previously mentioned, according to the illustrated examples of covering 501 and masking aid 101, the sheets of flexible plastics material of the second panel portion 103 and panel 502 are transparent, which allow a hairdresser to visually monitor progress of the treatment process without having to disturb the panel 502 or the masking aid 101 and, in turn, without having to disturb the selected strands of hair 601 being treated. This is particularly important when the treatment process involves the balayage technique in which the treatment agent is painted onto the surface of the hair. However, it is to be appreciated that one, two or all three of the first and second panel portions 102, 103 of the masking aid 101 and the panel 502 of the covering 501 may have any degree of opacity.
In addition to use with a masking aid as described hereinbefore, the covering 501 may be used on its own, for example when applying highlights or lowlights.
A masking aid 701 according to a third example is shown in Figure 7. Masking aid 701 is similar to masking aid 101 of Figures I and 2, with the difference only in dimensions.
The masking aid 701 may differ from the masking aid 101 only in that the first panel portion 702 may have a dimension of 33 cm in a length direction 704 (this being less than the equivalent dimension of the first panel portion 102 of masking aid 101).
A masking aid 801 is shown in Figure 8. The masking aid 801 comprises a panel 802.
The panel 802 comprises a sheet of a flexible plastics material and supports a plurality of elongate strips of metal foil, such as strips of metal foil 803-805, laminated to the sheet of flexible plastics material, the elongate strips of metal foil 803-805 having a dimension in a width direction 806 of the panel 802 that is greater than a dimension in a length direction 807 of the panel 802, the strips of metal foil 803-505 spaced apart in the length direction 807 of the panel 802 and arranged to extend parallel to one another.
In this example, the plurality of elongate strips of metal foil 803-805 comprises a first strip of metal foil 803 located along a first 808 of a pair of opposed ends 808, 809 of the panel 802, a second strip of metal foil 804 located along the second 807 of the pair of opposed ends 808, 809 of the panel 802 and a third elongate strip of metal foil 804 located between the first and second elongate strips of metal foil 803, 805. In this example, the third elongate strip of metal foil 804 is located equidistantly between the first and second elongate strips of metal foil 803, 805.
In this example, the flexible plastics material is polyethylene terephthalate (PET). In this example, the metal foil is aluminium foil.
The panel 802 illustrated in Figure 8 is similar to the panel 502 of the covering 501 of Figures 5 and 6, with the difference only in dimensions.
The panel 802 may differ from the panel 502 only in that the panel 502 may have a dimension of 33 cm in a length direction 803 (this being less than the equivalent dimension of the panel 502) and that the third elongate strip of metal foil 805 may have a dimension of 8 cm in the length direction 807 (this being greater than the equivalent dimension of the third elongate strip of metal foil 502 of panel 502).
Panel 802 of Figure 8 may be used as a covering for masking aid 701 of Figure 7 or may be used as a masking aid in its own right.
The present application thus provides a first version of a masking aid that comprises a first panel portion for providing a substrate for strands of hair to be treated, and a second panel portion for overlying the first panel portion; the second panel portion foldable relative to the first panel portion about a fold axis for allowing the second panel portion to be opened away from and closed towards the first panel portion; in which a slot is defined proximate said fold axis for receiving strands of hair therethrough for location between an obverse surface of the first panel portion and a reverse surface of the second panel portion; and a masking template is defined by the second panel portion for partially covering the first panel portion when the second panel portion overlies the first panel portion.
The present application thus further provides a second version of a masking aid that comprises a panel, the panel comprising a sheet of a flexible plastics material, and the panel supporting a plurality of elongate strips of metal foil laminated to said sheet of flexible plastics material, the elongate strips of metal foil extending in a width direction of the panel, spaced apart in a length direction of the panel and arranged to extend parallel to one another. A masking aid according to the second version may also be suitable for use as a covering for a masking aid according to the first version.
It is to be appreciated that a masking aid as described herein may be fabricated from any suitable material or combination of materials, may be manufactured using any suitable process or combination of processes and may have any suitable dimensions.
A material or materials for the masking aid or a component thereof may be selected with reference to one or more of the following considerations: weight, transparency, chemical resistance, tear resistance, suitability for manufacture of the product, price.
In an example, the masking aid is formed as a unitary component. In this example, the masking aid may be die cut from a sheet of material, which is folded to define a fold axis between first and second panel portions. In an alternative example, the first and second panel portions may be formed separately and then joined together. The slot may be performed in one of, or between the first and second panel portions.
Although illustrative embodiments of the invention have been disclosed in detail herein, with reference to the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise embodiments and examples shown and that various changes and modifications can be effected therein by one skilled in the art 15 without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
