Description

COSMETICS APPLICATOR
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
1. Field of the Invention [0001] The subject invention relates to a cosmetics applicator, a method of manufacturing a cosmetics applicator, and a method of applying cosmetics to a face of an individual.
2. Description of the Related Art
[0002] Individuals who wear cosmetic materials often spend a considerable amount of time applying those cosmetic materials. In an attempt to save time in the application of the cosmetic materials, many cosmetic applicators have been developed. United States published patent application No. 2006/0013844 (the
'844 application), Serial No. 10/998,203, filed on November 26, 2004, discloses such a cosmetic applicator for applying cosmetic materials to a face of an individual.. [0003] The cosmetic applicator disclosed in the '844 application includes a film layer having a first side and a second side. A cosmetic material is disposed on the first side of the film layer, and an adhesive layer is disposed on the second side of the film layer. The adhesive layer bonds the film layer to the face of the individual. The cosmetic applicator is shaped to fit different facial features of the face of the individual, e.g., an eye-shadow element is shaped to fit an eyelid of the individual. Additionally, the cosmetic material disposed on the film layer includes an appropriate composition and color for the respective facial feature onto which the cosmetic applicator is to be applied, e.g., the cosmetic material may include an appropriate colored eye-shadow to the eyelid of the individual. A cover layer is disposed adjacent the adhesive layer to protect the adhesive layer before use. To apply the cosmetic material to the face of the individual, the release layer is removed, and the adhesive layer is applied to the appropriate facial feature of the individual, bonding the film layer and the cosmetic material disposed thereon onto the face of the individual. Accordingly, the cosmetic applicator adheres the film layer to the face of the individual, but does not transfer the cosmetic material to the face. This is not only uncomfortable, but does not permit the individual to blend the cosmetic material into the face surrounding the cosmetic applicator.
[0004] Cosmetic applicators for applying samples of cosmetic materials are also well known in the art. United States Patent No. 5,980,960 (the '960 patent) Serial No. 08/843,316 filed on April 25, 1997, discloses such a sample cosmetic applicator. The cosmetic applicator of the '960 patent includes a backing layer defining a hole therethrough. A flexible layer is affixed to the backing layer and covers the hole. A cosmetic material is disposed on the flexible layer opposite the backing layer. A removable cover layer is disposed over the cosmetic material to protect the cosmetic material before use. The cosmetic material is applied by, removing the cover layer, inserting a finger through the hole to stretch the flexible layer outward, away from the backing layer, and then directly applying the cosmetic material to the appropriate facial feature on the individual's face, e.g., if the cosmetic material is a lip color, the cosmetic material is applied to the lips of the individual. This type of cosmetic applicator works well for individual applications of single cosmetic materials, but would require several different cosmetic applicators, one for each type of cosmetic material, to apply all of the several different types of cosmetic materials utilized over the entire face of the individual. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION AND ADVANTAGES [0005] The subject invention provides a cosmetic applicator. The cosmetic applicator comprises a film layer having a first side and a second side. A plurality of cosmetic materials is disposed on the first side of the film layer and transferable therefrom. The plurality of cosmetic materials include at least one first cosmetic material and at least one second cosmetic material different form and non- homogenous relative to the first cosmetic material. A backing layer is disposed on the second side of the film layer for supporting the film layer. Each of the plurality of cosmetic materials is disposed on the first side of the film layer separately from all of the other cosmetic materials for applying each of the plurality of cosmetic materials to a corresponding facial feature on a face of an individual.
[0006] The subject invention also provides a method of applying each of the plurality of cosmetic materials to the corresponding facial feature on the face of the individual. The cosmetic materials are applied by the cosmetic applicator having each of the cosmetic materials disposed thereon separately form all other of the plurality of cosmetic materials. The cosmetic materials include a first cosmetic material and a second cosmetic material different from and non-homogenous relative to the first cosmetic material. The method comprises the steps of aligning each of the plurality of cosmetic materials disposed on the cosmetic applicator with the corresponding facial feature on the face of the individual; pressing the cosmetic applicator against the face of the individual to transfer the plurality of cosmetic materials onto the plurality of facial features of the individual; and then removing the cosmetic applicator. [0007] The subject invention also provides a method of manufacturing the cosmetic applicator including a film layer having the plurality of cosmetic materials disposed on the first side of the film layer. The method comprises the steps of providing the plurality of cosmetic materials to include the first cosmetic material and the second cosmetic material different from and non-homogenous relative to the first cosmetic material; and arranging the plurality of cosmetic materials on the first side of the film layer relative to each other with each of the plurality of cosmetic materials arranged to correspond to the facial feature on the face of the individual to mimic the face of the individual. [0008] Accordingly, the subject invention provides a cosmetic applicator that permits the individual to apply all of their desired cosmetics to their entire face with a single, simple and convenient cosmetic applicator, thereby reducing the overall time it takes the individual to apply all of the different cosmetic materials, while still providing the individual with a professional cosmetic makeover.

[0013] Figure 4 is a fragmentary cross sectional view of the cosmetic applicator showing adjoining cosmetic materials disposed in separate layers one above the other.
[0014] Figure 5 is a plan view of a back of the cosmetic applicator;
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION [0015] Referring to the Figures, wherein like numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, a cosmetic applicator is shown generally at 20. The cosmetic applicator 20 is utilized to apply a plurality of cosmetic materials 22 to a plurality of facial features on the face of the individual. The cosmetic applicator 20 is for a single use, and is not reusable.
[0016] Referring to Figure 1, the cosmetic materials 22 include a first cosmetic material and a second cosmetic material different from and non-homogenous relative to the first cosmetic material. The cosmetic materials 22 may include at least one cosmetic material 22 chosen from a group including a foundation having highlights and shadows, a concealer, a rouge or a blush, an eye-shadow 24, or a Hp color 26. It should be understood that each of the cosmetic materials 22 includes a specific composition having several different ingredients, and that each of the cosmetic materials 22 is non-homogenous relative to the other cosmetic materials 22, regardless of the materials utilized in each composition. It is also contemplated that the cosmetic materials 22 may also include several different colors of a face paint, such as would be used for military camouflage, hunting camouflage, Halloween make-up, or theatrical make-up. It should be understood that some other type of cosmetic material 22, other than specifically enumerated herein, may also be included in the group of cosmetic materials 22, as well as that each of the different types of cosmetic materials 22 is commercially available in a wide variety colors and textures, and that the scope of the subject invention is not limited to the specific type of the cosmetic material 22 nor the specific color or texture of the cosmetic material 22.
[0017] Referring to Figures 3 and 4, the cosmetic applicator 20 includes a film layer 28 having a first side 30 and a second side 32. The film layer 28 is preferably a clear flexible plastic sheet, such as plastic wrap. An example of which is sold under the trademark SARAN, by S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. The cosmetic materials 22 are disposed on the first side 30 of the film layer 28 and transferable therefrom to the facial features of the individual. Each of the plurality of cosmetic materials 22 is disposed on the first side 30 of the film layer 28 separately and non- homogeneously from all other of the plurality of cosmetic materials 22. Accordingly, each of the cosmetic materials 22 is a distinct material, i.e., each of the cosmetic material 22 includes a distinct composition that is not mixed with any of the other cosmetic materials 22 prior to being disposed on the film layer 28. The cosmetic materials 22 are deposited on the first side 30 of the film layer 28 to allow for the appropriate overlapping of the distinct cosmetic materials 22 wherever necessary to facilitate the blending of the cosmetic materials 22 where appropriate to achieve the desired aesthetic effect. Accordingly, the cosmetic applicator 20 includes at least one first region 34, in which only one cosmetic material 22 is disposed on the first side 30 of the film layer 28. Typically, the first regions 34 will include at least one region chosen from a group comprising an eye region, a lip region, an eyebrow region, a cheek region, and a nose region. The eye region being disposed about the eyes of the individual, the lip region being disposed about the lips of the individual, the eyebrow region being disposed about the eyebrows of the individual, the cheek region being disposed on the cheeks of the individual, and the nose region being disposed about the nose of the individual.
[0018] Additionally, the cosmetic applicator 20 further includes at least one second region 36. The second region 36 is disposed adjacent one of the first regions 34, and includes more than one of the cosmetic materials 22 disposed on the first side 30 of the film layer 28. In other words, the second region 36 has two or more of the cosmetic materials 22 to permit blending of cosmetic materials 22. The cosmetic materials 22 in the second region 36 are disposed on the first side 30 of the film layer 28 separately form all other of the cosmetic materials 22. As such, the separate cosmetic materials 22 within the second region 36 may be disposed adjacent one another as shown in Figure 3, or may alternatively be layered over one another as shown in Figure 4.
[0019] A backing layer 38 is disposed on the second side 32 of the film layer 28 for supporting the film layer 28. The backing layer 38 is preferably a semi-rigid piece of paper capable of supporting the film layer 28 to prevent the film layer 28 from doubling over onto itself, yet still flexible enough to contour to the face of the individual when pressed against the face to transfer the cosmetic materials 22 from the film layer 28 to the face of the individual. An adhesive 40 is disposed between the second side 32 of the film layer 28 and the backing layer 38 for bonding the film layer 28 to the backing layer 38. Contact paper, such as the type typically applied to shelves, may be utilized as the backing layer 38, with the adhesive 40 on the contact paper bonding the contact paper to the film layer 28.
[0020] A cover layer 50 is disposed opposite the first side 30 of the film layer 28 for sandwiching the plurality of cosmetic materials 22 therebetween. The cover layer 50 protects the cosmetic materials 22 during shipment of the cosmetic applicator 20 to the individual prior to transferring the cosmetic materials 22 onto the facial features of the individual. The cover layer 50 may include a clear plastic film similar to that of the film layer 28, and is preferably bonded to the first side 30 of the film layer 28 by static electricity. However, it should be understood that the cover layer 50 may be bonded to the first side 30 of the film layer 28 by some other suitable method. The cover layer 50 is removable from the film layer 28 while maintaining separation of the plurality of cosmetic materials 22, i.e., the cosmetic materials 22 are not disturbed or mixed by removing the cover layer 50.
[0021] Referring to Figure 5, the backing layer 38 includes indicia 42 printed thereon on a surface opposite the film layer 28. The indicia 42, preferably numbers accompanied by arrows, indicate the appropriate sequence of steps to follow when applying the cosmetic materials 22 to the face of the individual, and correspond to an instruction sheet describing the proper application of the cosmetic materials 22. Accordingly, the individual reads the instruction sheet, and presses the cosmetic applicator 20 in the appropriate region represented by the indicia 42 on the backing layer 38, i.e., the instruction sheet will include an instruction such as press "1" on the cosmetic applicator 20 and apply pressure outward from "1" along the adjoining arrows.
[0022] Referring back to Figure 1 , the plurality of cosmetic materials
22 are arranged relative to each other in a pattern mimicking the face of the individual to be applied to the corresponding facial features on the face of the individual. For example, if the cosmetic material 22 is an eye-shadow 24, then the cosmetic material 22 is arranged relative to the other cosmetic materials 22 to correspond to an eye-lid of the individual. Additionally, if the cosmetic material 22 also includes a Hp color 26, then the lip color 26 is arranged relative to the eye-shadow 24 to correspond to a pair of lips of the individual while the eye-shadow 24 corresponds to the eye-lids of the individual.
[0023] The cosmetic applicator 20 resembles the face of the individual, thus aiding in the proper alignment of the cosmetic applicator 20. The cosmetic applicator 20 defines a pair of slots 44 for alignment with the eyes of the individual. The slots 44 may include any suitable shape to permit vision through the cosmetic applicator 20 and alignment with the eyes of the individual, such as a circular shape, a rectangular shape, or an oval shape. The cosmetic applicator 20 further defines an aperture 46 for alignment with a mouth of the individual and an opening 48 for alignment with a nose of the individual. The pair of slots 44, the aperture 46, and the opening 48 help assist the individual in aligning the cosmetic applicator 20, and thereby the cosmetic materials 22, with the corresponding facial features on the face of the individual. Additionally, the aperture 46 and the opening 48 permit the individual to breath during application of the cosmetic materials 22 to the face of the individual.
[0024] In an alternative embodiment, shown in Figure 2, the backing layer 38 is rigid, with the backing layer 38 and the film layer 28 including a three dimensional shape contoured to fit the face of the individual. The rigid cosmetic applicator 20 may be custom molded to the individual, or alternatively, a variety of differently sized rigid cosmetic applicators 20 may be provided so that the individual may choose the one that best fits the face of the individual.
[0025] The subject invention also provides a method of applying each of the cosmetic materials 22 to the corresponding facial features on the face of the individual. The cosmetic materials 22 are applied by the cosmetic applicator 20 described above, with the cosmetic materials 22 including a first cosmetic material and a second cosmetic material different from and non homogenous relative to the first cosmetic material. Each of the cosmetic materials 22 are disposed on the cosmetic applicator separately from all of the other cosmetic materials 22. The method of applying the cosmetic materials 22 comprises the steps of selecting a skin tone that most closely matches a skin tone of the individual from a group of predetermined skin tones. A preferred color arrangement of the cosmetic materials 22 must also be selected from a group of pre-determined color arrangements. The color arrangement includes the preferred color and shade of the cosmetic materials 22, i.e., the preferred color Hp color 26, the preferred color eye-shadow 24, the preferred shade of base, etc. The preferred color arrangement may also include a military camouflage arrangement, a hunting camouflage arrangement, a Halloween arrangement, or a theatrical arrangement. The steps of selecting a skin tone and selecting a color arrangement may be performed in person at a store, or alternatively, may be performed online through an internet site. Accordingly, the individual may select the skin tone and the color arrangement, order, and purchase the cosmetic applicator 20 all online.
[0026] The method of applying the cosmetic materials 22 further comprises the step of arranging the plurality of cosmetic materials 22 disposed on the cosmetic applicator 20 relative to each other in a pattern mimicking the face of the individual. As described above, the cosmetic materials 22 are arranged to correspond to the facial features and also arranged relative to each other in a pattern corresponding to the face of the individual, so that when the cosmetic applicator 20 is aligned with the face of the individual, each of the cosmetic materials 22 will be positioned adjacent the appropriate corresponding facial feature.
[0027] The method of applying the cosmetic materials 22 further comprises the step of exposing the cosmetic materials 22 prior to aligning each of the plurality of cosmetic materials 22 with the corresponding facial features of the individual. The cosmetic materials 22 are exposed by removing the cover layer SO from the film layer 28, thereby exposing the cosmetic materials 22 disposed therebetween. [0028] The method of applying the cosmetic materials 22 further comprises the step of aligning each of the plurality of cosmetic materials 22 disposed on the cosmetic applicator 20 with the corresponding facial feature on the face of the individual. This is most easily accomplished by aligning the aperture 46 with the mouth of the individual, the opening 48 with the nose of the individual, and the pair of slots 44 with the eyes of the individual. Because the cosmetic materials 22 are aligned relative to the aperture 46, the opening 48, and the pair of slots 44 to correspond to the appropriate facial feature, aligning the aperture 46, the opening 48, and the pair of slots 44 with the mouth, the nose, and the eyes respectively will thereby align the cosmetic materials 22 with the appropriate corresponding facial features.
[0029] The method of applying the cosmetic materials 22 further comprises pressing the cosmetic applicator 20 against the face of the individual to transfer the plurality of cosmetic materials 22 onto the plurality of facial features of the individual. The cosmetic applicator 20 is then removed from the face of the individual, leaving the cosmetic materials 22 disposed thereon. The step of pressing the cosmetic applicator 20 against the face of the individual may be further defined as pressing different regions 34, 36 of the cosmetic applicator 20 in a pre-determined order toi ensure all regions 34, 36 of the cosmetic applicator 20 are pressed against the face of the individual. The individual reads the pre-determined order form the instruction sheet as described above, instructing the individual on the proper steps of applying the cosmetic materials 22. [0030] The method of applying the cosmetic materials 22 further comprises the step of blending each of the plurality of cosmetic materials 22 into the face of the individual. The individual may utilize a finger to blend or smooth the cosmetic materials 22, or alternatively, may utilize a specialized tool to blend the cosmetic materials 22 as is known when applying cosmetic materials 22.
[0031] The subject invention also provides a method of manufacturing the cosmetic applicator 20, as described above, to include the film layer 28 having the cosmetic materials 22 disposed on the first side 30 of the film layer 28, and the backing layer 38 disposed on the second side 32 of the film layer 28. The method of manufacturing the cosmetic applicator 20 comprises the steps of providing the plurality of cosmetic materials to include the first cosmetic material and the second cosmetic material different from and non-homogenous relative to the first cosmetic material. As described above, the cosmetic materials may be chosen from a group of cosmetic materials including a foundation having highlights and shadows, a concealer, a rouge or a blush, an eye-shadow 24, a lip color 26, or some other cosmetic material.
[0032] The method of manufacturing the cosmetic applicator 20 further comprises the step of bonding the backing layer 38 to the second side 32 of the first layer. The backing layer 38 is bonded by the adhesive 40 disposed therebetween as described above. [0033] The method of manufacturing the cosmetic applicator 20 further comprises the step of removing a portion of the film layer 28 and the backing layer 38 to provide the pair of slots 44 for alignment with the eyes of the individual relative to the cosmetic materials 22. Likewise, a portion of the film layer 28 and the backing layer 38 is removed to provide the aperture 46 for alignment with the mouth of the individual relative to the cosmetic materials 22 and the opening 48 for alignment with the nose of the individual relative to the cosmetic materials 22. The opening 48, the aperture 46, and the pair of slots 44 may be cut or punched out and
- removed. It should be understood that any suitable manner of removing the portion of the film layer 28 and the backing layer 38 may be utilized. Additionally, it should be understood that the opening 48, the aperture 46, and the pair of slots 44 may be removed either after the film layer 28 and the backing layer 38 are bonded together, or before the film layer 28 and the backing layer 38 are bonded together.
[0034] The method of manufacturing the cosmetic applicator 20 further comprises the step of arranging the plurality of cosmetic materials 22 on the first side 30 of the film layer 28 relative to each other with each of the plurality of cosmetic materials 22 arranged to correspond to a facial feature on a face of an individual to mimic the face of the individual. As described above, each of the cosmetic materials 22 are arranged independently from and in spaced relationship to all of the other cosmetic materials 22.
[0035] The method of manufacturing the cosmetic applicator 20 further comprises the step of covering the plurality of cosmetic materials 22 by placing the cover layer 50 over the cosmetic materials 22, adjacent the first side 30 of the film layer 28.
[0036] The method of manufacturing the cosmetic applicator 20 further comprises the step of printing the indicia 42 on the cosmetic applicator 20 to indicate an application sequence to apply the cosmetic materials 22 to the face of the individual. Preferably, the indicia 42 is printed on the backing layer 38, opposite the film layer 28 so as to be visible in a mirror when the cosmetic applicator 20 is aligned with the face of the individual, and the individual is viewing the indicia 42 through the pair of slots 44.
[0037] When manufacturing the alternative embodiment of the cosmetic applicator 20, the method further comprises the step of forming the film layer 28 and the backing layer 38 into a three dimensional shape to fit the face of the individual.
[0038] The foregoing invention has been described in accordance with the relevant legal standards; thus, the description is exemplary rather than limiting in nature. Variations and modifications to the disclosed embodiments may become apparent to those skilled in the art and do come within the scope of the invention. Accordingly, the, scope of legal protection afforded this invention can only be determined by studying the following claims.
