Abstract

257,690. Huyghe, A. B. F. June 15, 1925. Centrifugal machines.-In a centrifugal machine for making pipes and like hollow bodies of concrete, metal, or the like, or for coating pipes internally, the moulds 26, Fig. I., fitted exteriorly with collars 26<x> are rolled upon a pair of stationary rails 23, Fig. II, to position between two headstocks 2 slidably mounted on a frame 1 and adapted to be moved simultaneously towards or away from each other by means of shafts 5, 6 having right and left handed screw threads engaging the headstocks. The shafts 5 are fitted with handwheels 11 and are geared by bevel gearing to each other and the shafts 6. The headstocks carry one or more pairs of aligned revoluble mandrels 3, each having a bell-mouth and an internal flange 13. When the headstocks are moved towards each other, the flared ends of the mandrels receive the ends of the moulds or pipes already in position and raise them from the rails. The ends of the moulds abut against the flanges 13 of the mandrels, and a split ring is sprung on to the interior of each flange 13 before the machine is set in motion. The mandrels are formed as pulleys to be driven by belts passing over pulleys 16, the shafts 17 of which slide but do not rotate in sleeves 18 carried by a driving shaft 19. The shaft 19 is driven by an electric motor 20 through variable speed gearing. When the machine is to be used to mould pipes of smaller diameter, adapter sleeves formed similarly to the mandrels 3 are inserted in the mandrels and bolted to the flanges 13. For use with the smaller moulds the central parts 23<x> of the rails 23 are made adjustable in height. The parts 23<x> are supported by pillars 24 held at the required height in guides by pins. When pipes of considerably smaller diameter requiring a greater speed of rotation are to be moulded, the moulds 26, as shown on the right-hand side of Fig. I., are received in adapter mandrels 31 which are supported by friction rollers 30 carried by cages 29. The cages are fixed to the framework and enter the mandrels 3 so that the rollers 30 bear on the interior surfaces of these mandrels.
