Abstract
A topical antiperspirant composition comprising tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane or its salts in an aqueous or aqueous-alcohol carrier where the pH is from 2.5 to less than 7. The composition may comprise 0-15 % of an antiperspirant active substance which may be an organic or inorganic salt of aluminium, zirconium, or zinc e.g. an aluminium chlorohydrate (e.g. aluminium sesquichlorohydrate), an aluminium zirconium chlorohydrate, an aluminium-zirconium-chlorohydrate-glycine complex, potassium aluminium sulphate, sodium aluminium chlorine hydroxyacetate, aluminium bromohydrate, aluminium chloride, aluminium sulphate, zinc chloride, zinc sulphocarbolate, zinc sulphate or zirconium chlorohydrate. The antiperspirant active may be free from salts containing aluminium. The composition may comprise an oil-in-water emulsifier with a hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) of 7-20, or a water-in-oil emulsifier with an HLB of 2-7. The composition may comprise both an O/W and W/O emulsifier, and the concentration of the O/W emulsifier may be higher than that of the W/O emulsifier. The composition may also comprise 1-15 % of a cosmetic oil and/or a stabilizer. The aqueous carrier may be water and the aqueous/alcohol mixture may be water and a linear or branched C2-C6 alcohol e.g. ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, 1,3-propandiol, dipropylene glycol or 1,2-propanediol. The present invention also relates to the use of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane as an antiperspirant active substance in a topical antiperspirant composition.
Description
TRIS(HYDROXYMETHYU)AMINOMETHANE OR ITS SALTS AS AN ACTIVE
SUBSTANCE FOR REDUCING SWEAT SECRETION
TECHNICAL FIELD [0001] The present invention relates to an antiperspirant composition for the topical treatment of the skin comprising tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane or its salts in an aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic carrier. Further, the present invention relates to the use of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane or its salts as an antiperspirant active substance in an antiperspirant composition for the topical treatment of the skin.
BACKGROUND [0002] Body odor arises to a large extent from the bacterial decomposition of individual components of sweat on the skin. In body deodorization, one can roughly differentiate between active substances which absorb unpleasant-smelling substances already formed (activated carbon, zinc ricinoleate, cyclodextrins, ion exchangers) or cover (fragrances, perfumes) them, and active substances which prevent the decomposition of perspiration and the formation of unpleasant-smelling substances or at least slow them down (germ-inhibiting active substances, prebiotic components and enzyme inhibitors). Depending on the chosen mechanism by which body odor is to be prevented, odor absorbers, fragrances, deodorizing ion exchangers, germ-inhibiting agents, prebiotic active components, enzyme inhibitors and other active substances can be used as cosmetic deodorizing active substances. The active substances must be included in the compositions, ensuring that the compositions can be conveniently provided in a desired dosage form and that the compositions do not cause an unpleasant sensation on the skin.
[0003] Underarm wetness is caused by eccrine, watery sweat and often results in unwanted wet spots on clothing.
[0004] The antiperspirant cosmetic antiperspirants used in the prior art contain aluminum and/or zirconium compounds as antiperspirant active substances. These antiperspirant compounds reduce sweat secretion of the body by temporarily narrowing and/or obstructing the excretory ducts of the sweat glands, so that the amount of sweat can be reduced by about 20 to about 60 percent. On the other hand, they have an additional deodorizing effect due to their antimicrobial effect. However, the aluminum and/or zirconium compounds used to inhibit sweat can lead to unpleasant skin reactions in some users. Aluminum compounds are especially considered critical by consumers. In addition, the use of the aforementioned antiperspirant compounds can lead to staining by the products being applied on the clothing.
[0005] There is therefore a need, instead of the commonly used aluminum and/or zirconium compounds, to use other antiperspirant cosmetic active substances or at least to significantly reduce the amount of these compounds. The antiperspirant active substances should have a good antiperspirant effect, good skin compatibility and be easy to formulate. In addition, these antiperspirant active substances should have no negative impact on the storage stability of the cosmetic agents used for sweat inhibition.
BRIEF SUMMARY [0006] In a first aspect, the present invention relates to an antiperspirant composition for the topical treatment of the skin comprising tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane or its salts in an aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic carrier, wherein the antiperspirant composition has a pH value from 2.5 to less than 7.

[0014] In a second aspect, the present invention relates to the use of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane or its salts as an antiperspirant active substance in an antiperspirant composition for the topical treatment of the skin. Preferred antiperspirant compositions are those described supra.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION [0015] The following detailed description is merely exemplary in nature and is not intended to limit the disclosure or the application and uses of the subject matter as described herein. Furthermore, there is no intention to be bound by any theory presented in the preceding background or the following detailed description.
[0016] It is an object of the present invention to provide antiperspirant active substances, the use of which avoids or at least mitigates the disadvantages of the prior art and use of which results in a high skin compatibility with simultaneous reliable reduction of underarm wetness.
[0017] A first subject of the invention is therefore an antiperspirant composition for the topical treatment of the skin comprising tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane or its salts in an aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic carrier, wherein the antiperspirant composition has a pH from about 2.5 to less than about 7.
[0018] Tri s(hy droxym ethyl )ami nomethane ,,ΟΗ
HO.
.OH
NH2 is also abbreviated TRIS or THAM or referred to as tromethamine, trometamol (INN). Chemically, it is a primary amine having three alcoholic hydroxy groups. The amino group can be protonated with acids to form the corresponding salts (hydrochlorides, hydrogensulfates, lactates, citrates, etc.).
[0019] It has surprisingly been found that tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane exhibits a sweat-reducing effect in aqueous solution in an acidic pH range. In particular, tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane in the form of its hydrochloride has proven to be particularly advantageous. When the aqueous solution is adjusted to an acidic pH with hydrochloric acid, the antiperspirant composition is particularly effective. According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the antiperspirant composition has a pH value from about 3.2 to less than about 6, preferably from about 3.5 to about 5.8, more preferably from about 4.0 to about 5.5.
[0020] According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the antiperspirant composition contains tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane and/or its salts in a total amount of from about 0.1 to about 30% by weight, preferably from about 1 to about 15% by weight, more preferably from about 5 to about 10% by weight, based on the total weight of the antiperspirant composition. Tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane has been found to be particularly advantageous in this range.
[0021] In summary, antiperspirant compositions according to the invention are preferred which contain tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane and/or its salts in a total amount of from about 0.1 to about 30% by weight, preferably from about 1 to about 15% by weight, more preferably from about 5 to about 10% by weight, based on the total weight of the antiperspirant composition, and/or are characterized in that the antiperspirant composition has a pH value from about 3.2 to less than about 6, preferably from about 3.5 to about 5.8, more preferably from about 4.0 to about 5.5.
[0022] The formulation tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane and/or its salts in a total amount of from about 0.1 to about 30% by weight means that the compositions according to the invention may contain
- only tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane in a total amount of from about 0.1 to about 30% by weight or
- only tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane salt(s) in a total amount of from about 0.1 to about 30% by weight or
- both tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane and tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane salt(s) in a total amount of from about 0.1 to about 30% by weight [0023] The amount of active tri s(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane or the protonated compound compared to the pure compound is reduced for salts with heavy anions, which is why the use of acids with low-weight anions has proven particularly useful for pH adjustment of the agents according to the invention. Hydrochloric acid has been found to be particularly effective leading to the formation of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane hydrochloride.
[0024] In another embodiment of the invention, at least one further anion can be present as a substitute or in addition to chloride ions. Inorganic anions, for example, sulfate ions and/or phosphate ions, or organic anions can be included as further ions. The organic anions can be, for example, phosphonates, citrate, lactate, tartrate and/or malate. Preferred antiperspirant cosmetic agents according to the invention are characterized in that they contain at least one further anion, preferably an organic anion which is more preferably selected from the group consisting of citrate, lactate, tartrate and malate and/or other anions of organic acids.
[0025] The use of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane and/or its salts makes it possible to provide an antiperspirant composition which can dispense with aluminum and/or zirconium compounds or in which the content of aluminum and/or zirconium compounds can be reduced. Therefore, in a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the antiperspirant composition is essentially free of compounds containing aluminum and/or zirconium.
[0026] Since tri s(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane and/or its salts are to reduce but not completely prevent the formation of sweat, the underarm odor formation is retarded and is not completely prevented. It is provided according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention that the antiperspirant composition comprises an antiperspirant active substance, which is preferably an inorganic or organic salt of aluminum, zirconium, zinc or a mixture thereof, wherein the amount of antiperspirant active substance is present in a reduced amount compared to conventional commercial products.
[0027] Preferred antiperspirant compositions of this embodiment according to the invention are characterized in that the antiperspirant composition comprises an antiperspirant active substance which is preferably an inorganic or organic salt of aluminum, zirconium, zinc or a mixture thereof.
[0028] In a preferred embodiment, the antiperspirant active substance is selected from an aluminum chlorohydrate, more preferably the antiperspirant active substance comprises activated aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum sesquichlorohydrate, aluminum chlorhydric propylene glycol (PG), aluminum chlorohydrex-polyethylene glycol (PEG), aluminum sesquichlorohydrex PG, aluminum sesquichlorohydrex PEG, aluminum PG dichlorohydrex, aluminum PEG dichlorohydrex or aluminum hydroxide; or is selected from an aluminum zirconium chlorohydrate, preferably aluminum zirconium trichlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium pentachlorohydrate or aluminum zirconium octachlorohydrate; or is selected from an aluminum-zirconium chlorohydrateglycine complex, preferably aluminum zirconium trichlorohydrex glycine, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex glycine, aluminum zirconium pentachlorohydrex glycine, aluminum zirconium octachlorohydrex glycine, or selected from potassium aluminum sulphate (KAI(SO4)2 - 12 H2O, alum), sodium aluminum chlorohydroxy acetate, aluminum bromohydrate, aluminum chloride, aluminum sulphate, zinc chloride, zinc sulfocarbolate, zinc sulfate or zirconium chlorohydrate, wherein the antiperspirant active substance is present in the antiperspirant composition in an amount of more than about 0 to about 15% by weight, preferably from about 0.01 to about 5% by weight, more preferably from about 0.1 to about 1% by weight, based on the total weight of the antiperspirant composition.
[0029] In summary, antiperspirant compositions according to the invention are preferred in which the antiperspirant active substance is selected from an aluminum chlorohydrate, preferably activated aluminum chlorohydrate, aluminum sesquichlorohydrate, aluminum chlorohydrex propylene glycol (PG), aluminum chlorohydrex polyethylene glycol (PEG), aluminum sesquichlorohydrex PG, aluminum sesquichlorohydrex PEG, aluminum PG7 dichiorhydrex, aluminum PEG-dichlorhydrex or aluminum hydroxide; or is selected from an aluminum zirconium chlorohydrate, preferably aluminum zirconium tri chlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrate, aluminum zirconium pentachlorohydrate or aluminum zirconium octachlorohydrate; or is selected from an aluminum-zirconiumchlorohydrate-glycine complex, preferably aluminum zirconium trichlorohydrexglycine, aluminum zirconium tetrachlorohydrex glycine, aluminum zirconium pentachlorohydrex glycine, aluminum zirconium octachlorohydrex glycine, or selected from potassium aluminum sulfate (KAI(SO4)2 - 12 H20, alum), sodium aluminum chlorine hydroxyacetate, aluminum bromohydrate, aluminum chloride, aluminum sulfate, zinc chloride, zinc sulfocarbolate, zinc sulfate or zirconium chlorohydrate, and/or in which the antiperspirant active substance is present in the antiperspirant composition in an amount of more than 0 to about 15% by weight, preferably from about 0.01 to about 5% by weight, more preferably from about 0.1 to about 1% by weight, based on the total weight of the antiperspirant composition.
[0030] The preferably used aluminum and/or zirconium-containing active substances can be activated by modifying them in molecular weight. They can thus be made more effective in terms of the sweat-reducing properties compared to non-activated active substances. Antiperspirant active substances which are particularly preferred according to the invention are therefore selected from so-called activated aluminum salts, which are also referred to as antiperspirant active substances having enhanced activity. Such active substances are known in the art and are also commercially available. Activated aluminum salts are typically produced by heat treating a relatively dilute solution of the salt (for example, about 10% by weight salt) to increase its HPLC peak 4-to-peak 3 area ratio. The activated salt can then be dried to a powder, in particular spray-dried. In addition to spray drying, for example, roller drying is also suitable.
[0031] However, the use of antiperspirant salts can also be completely dispensed with. Corresponding antiperspirant compositions that are essentially free of salts containing aluminum are preferred according to a further embodiment of the present invention.
[0032] Essentially free here means free of intentionally added aluminum salts, preferably a content of aluminum salts of < 0.1% by weight, based on the antiperspirant composition, particularly preferably a content of aluminum salts of < 0.01% by weight, still further preferred a content of aluminum salts of < 0.001% by weight and in particular a content of aluminum salts of < 0.0001% by weight.

[0083] Furthermore, tests for antiperspirant activity were performed. To test the effect of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane, the following compositions were tested:
10% aluminum chlorohydrate, aqueous solution as benchmark
10% tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane dissolved in water, the sample is adjusted to pH
3.5 using 20% hydrochloric acid [0084] To determine the antiperspirant effect, an antiperspirant study was performed on the backs of 16 test persons. The following antiperspirant agent was used for this:
Antiperspirant agent No.
Aqueous solution with 10% aluminum chlorohydrate ACH *, pH 4 V-I
Aqueous solution 10% tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane E-I** adjusted to pH 3.5 with 20% hydrochloric acid * Active substance ** Composition according to the invention [0085] On the back of 16 subjects each on one side next to the spine were applied ~ 40 pl of the antiperspirant agent V-I and in each case 75 μΐ of the cosmetic agent E-I. After 5 minutes, the treated sites were covered with occlusive non-adsorbent film. After 2 hours, these non-adsorbent pads were removed. The compositions were each applied to the backs of the subjects for four consecutive days in the manner previously described.
[0086] 24 h after the last application of the composition, absorbent pads were applied to the backs of the subjects at the sites where the compositions were previously applied. Furthermore, pads, which served as a control, were also applied on the other side of the spine at the same height. After the subjects had sweat for about 15 minutes at 80°C in the sauna, the amount of perspiration absorbed by the pads was determined gravimetrically, wherein each composition was compared with the corresponding untreated site on the back. The sweat reduction was determined from the gravimetric determination of the amount of sweat, wherein all determined values were statistically significant.
[0087] The sweat reduction of the respective composition compared to an untreated skin site is shown in the following table:
* significant [0088] The use of cosmetic agents containing tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane, especially as hydrochlorides, when this agent is applied to the skin results in a reduction in transpiration and reduced body odor.
