Abstract

A Foreign Object Debris (FOD) detection system is intended to comprise at least two radar devices. Each radar device comprises a transmitter configured to transmit a Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar signal, a receiver for receiving a reflection from an object and a mixer for mixing the reflected and transmitted signals to generate a difference signal. Further included is a processing system for controlling the transmitter and for determining a range to the object from the difference signal, and a clock synchronized with a reference clock. In use the radar devices are positioned adjacent a runway and the processing system of each device controls the transmission of a same FMCW waveform 42, 46 at a different predetermined offset relative to the reference clock such that the radar system has n simultaneous signals offset in time 52 relative to one another. A method of operation includes the step of defining a pulse repetition interval of the FMCW waveform and ensuring the time offset is different for each radar device and less than the pulse repetition period.
