256,587. Chemische Frabrik auf Actien, vorm. E. Schering. Aug. 7, 1925, [Convention date]. Grant of Patent refused. Lactic acid esters are prepared by treating a lactic acid salt with an alcohol in the presence of an acid at a temperature below and preferably considerably below the boiling point of the alcohol employed. An excess of acid may be used or a salt having a dehydrating action such as calcium chloride or magnesium sulphate may be added. Examples show the preparation of (1) lactic acid ethyl ester from calcium lactate and ethylalcohol using excess of sulphuric acid, the temperature being allowed to rise to 40-50‹ C., (2) lactic and methyl ester from magnesium lactate and methyl alcohol using excess of sulphuric acid, the temperature being allowed to rise to 30-40‹ C.
