Abstract

Dec. 2, 1925, Web feeding and guiding arrangements; inkribbon mechanism.-In web-manifolding arrangements comprising means for periodically retracting carbon sheets interleaved with the webs, the carbon sheets are attached to a normally stationary carrier, free movement of the platen carriage being permitted by arranging the webs in a long loop, and means are provided for straightening the webs to permit retraction of the carbon sheets without raising the platen. The typewriter 10 is equipped at the rear with a revoluble counterweighted frame 42 supporting a carbon-sheet carrier 23 and a cylindrical member 41. The frame 42 is pivoted to standards 26 on a base 26<b> and is revoluble by means of a fingerpiece 33 on a slide 34 connected to a sector 39 gearing with a pinion 40 on the frame. The carbon sheets are provided at the top with clips consisting of folded strips which are hooked on to strips secured to tabs or sheets 29a of paper, cloth, celluloid, &c. attached to blades 27 on the carrier 23. When the frame 42 is in the position shown in Fig. 4, webs 21 or a longitudinally folded web consisting of a series of forms are interleaved with the carbon sheets, passed round the platen 12, and pulled over a shelf 30 until the third form is in position for typing; the carbon sheets extend initially over the third form, the first two forms being used merely for manipulating the webs. The frame 42 is then turned to the position shown in Fig. 1 to form a long loop 28<b> Fig. 4, the frame remaining in the position shown in Fig. 4 during typing. On completion of the third form, the carriage is returned to mid position and the frame 42 is turned 'back towards the position shown in Fig. 4, the member 41 straightening the remainder 28 of the loop, and the webs and carbon sheets being retracted until the carbon sheets are clear of the platen. The feed-rollers 16 are then released, the webs are secured by applying a clamp 43 to the second form, and the return movement of the frame 42 is completed, the carbon sheets being thereby retracted into register with the fourth form. The above-described operations are repeated in typing the fourth and subsequent forms. The movements of the frame 41 are limited by contact of stops 55, 55a with one of the standards 26 and an adjustable stepped stop 57 respectively. The webs pass over a guide 22 on the member 41, and between adjustable side guides 42<a>, 15a mounted on a rod 42b on the frame 42 and on the paper-apron 15 respectively. The clamp 43 is secured to arms 48 pivoted to brackets 49 which can slide in graduated slots 59 in the shelf supports 31 and are secured by screws 62. Web-Cuttting arrangements.-The leading forms on the webs are torn off by means of a knife 47, Fig. 1, secured to the above-described clamp 43. The blades 27 on the carbon-sheet carrier 23 may be formed at the ends with knives for cutting a longitudinally folded web along the folds.
