Fats and fatty oils, extracting by pressure.- A press-plate for oil or other presses comprises a perforated sheet-metal face plate. a perforated disc-like supporting member, and an intermediate disc of wire mesh secured together to form a unit as distinct from a known arrangement in which wire mesh is arranged between two unconnected perforated plates. In the pot-press shown, having a taper 12 at the upper part of the bore of each pot 10 as described in Specification 144,277. press-plates 22. 24 are secured respectively to the platen 16 and to the slidable, pot bottom 26, filter-pads 20 of camel's hair being arranged in the pressure faces. Each plate comprises a supporting member S with a groove 60a for the wire-mesh disc 66, and with a groove 60<b> in which the perforated sheet metal face plate 68 is secured as by a weld 70. The oil expressed from the copra, ground cocoa beans, &c. passes through the filter pad 20, face plate 68 and wire-mesh 66 to circular grooves 80 in the supporting member, these grooves being connected by holes 86 to wider concentric grooves 82, from which the oil is discharged by radial grooves 88. Prior to insertion in the supporting plate the wire-mesh disc 66 is flattened as by passage between pressure rolls. The press-plate 24 has one or more grooves 50 which become filled with pressed material and pack the plate against the bore 14 of the pot 10. It is secured to the bottom 26 bv a central threaded bolt welded in the supporting plate and locked by nuts in a recess in the bottom 26. The pressplate 22 is removably secured to the platen 16 by riveting thinned edge-parts of the plate in notches in holding blocks 40 detachably secured to the platen. One of the blocks 40 serves as a stop for the pot 10 below as it is slid into the press from the rack, a lug 10<a> on the handle 10<b> of the pot engaging the block.
