Abstract
Apparatus for the treatment and modification of combustion gases produced during the combustion of organic substances e.g. methane, propane, butane, diesel, the combustion gas is modified by adding or extracting substances into or from the combustion gas. The resultant gas is preferably sufficiently oxygen depleted to cause retardation of fires, but contain sufficient oxygen to allow for breathing, and contain a mixture of carbon dioxide, water, nitrogen and other elements. Air, a solvent, foam, inert gas, either separately or collectively may be added to the gas. Non-flammable substances may also be added to enhance the gases firefighting capabilities. The apparatus may be a container having an inlet or outlet for the addition or subtraction of substances for modifying the combustion gas. The container may be airtight, and may be used to transport the gas e.g. tubing or ducting. A number of containers may be connected together (fig 2, 3). The flow of combustion gas, the modified gas and the substance into and out of the container may be controlled by taps, vales and/or flow meters, either manually or automatically. The apparatus may be used to extinguish fire within a self-contained unit; transportable (fig 4); or permanently sited within a building.
