TITLE | FIREPLACE HEARTH SAFETY LIGHTING SYSTEM |
STATEMENT OF INVENTION | THE INVENTION INTRODUCES HOW A STRIP LIGHTING SYSTEM CAN BE FIXED INTO OR ONTO THE UNDERSIDE OF LIP. THE INVENTION INTRODUCES THE MECHANISM FOR BOTH FIXING THE LIGHTING STRIP INTO OR ONTO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE HEARTH AND THE HEARTH CONSTRUCTION NEEDED TO ACCOMMODATE THE LIGHTING STRIP. THIS INVENTION RELATES TO THE USE OF A LIGHTING SYSTEM ON THE UNDERSIDE OF A RAISED HEARTH UPON WHICH THE FIREPLACE HEATING ELEMENT AND SURROUND ARE LOCATED. |
DESCRIPTION | A FIREPLACE NORMALLY CONSIST OF A MIXTURE OF SOME OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS : A) A SURROUND WHICH CAN BE MADE FROM MATERIALS INCLUDING BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY, STONE, METAL, WOOD. B) A HEATING ELEMENT WHICH GOES INSIDE THE SURROUND WHICH CAN BE OF THE FOLLOWING TYPE, BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY, A GAS FIRE, AN ELECTRIC FIRE, A SOLID FUEL OPEN FIRE IN A GRATE, A GEL BURNER OR A STOVE. |
C) A HEARTH UPON WHICH THE SURROUND AND HEATING ELEMENT STAND. THE HEARTH CAN BE MADE OF ANY MATERIAL OR OF ANY SIZE AS LONG AS IT COMPLIES WITH UK BUILDING REGULATIONS. THESE REGULATIONS STATE THE STANDARDS REQUIRED REGARDING THE TYPE OF MATERIAL AND THE THICKNESS OF MATERIAL WHICH CAN BE USED FOR A FIREPLACE HEARTH DEPENDING ON THE HEATING ELEMENT.
BUILDING REGULATIONS STATE THAT HEARTHS SHOULD BE CONSTRUCTED OF SUITABLE ROBUST MATERIAL SUCH THAT THEY PREVENT COMBUSTION APPLIANCES SETTING FIRE TO BUILDING FURNISHING OR THEY LIMIT THE RISK OF PEOPLE BEING ACCIDENTALLY BUNT.
REGULATIONS STATE THE BOUNDARY OF THIS HEARTH SURFACE SHOULD BE VISUALLY APPARENT.
ONE OF THE MOST COMMON TYPES OF HEARTHS USED IN THE INDUSTRY IS ONE CALLED A BOXED AND LIPPED HEARTH. THIS HEARTH IS NORMALLY, BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY, MADE OF STONE EITHER NATURAL OR COMPOSITE.
BOXED AND LIPPED DESCRIBES THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE HEARTH. THIS USES A FLAT TOP SECTION OF STONE
WHICH IS SUPPORTED OFF THE FLOOR BY USING VERTICAL RISERS. THE VERTICAL RISERS AND THE TOP FLAT SECTION THICKNESSES CAN BE OF ANY SIZE AS LONG AS THEY COMPLY WITH UK BUILDING REGULATIONS.
AS PART OF THE CONSTRUCTION OF THESE BOXED AND LIPPED HEARTHS AN AREA IS LEFT ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE HEARTH BETWEEN THE OUTSIDE EDGE OF THE VERTICAL RISERS AND THE EDGE OF THE TOP FLAT SECTION, KNOWN AS THE LIP. NORMALLY NOTHING IS PLACED OR FITTED INTO OR ONTO THE UNDERSIDE OF THIS LIP.
THE INVENTION USES THIS LIP. A LIGHTING STRIP (WHICH CAN BE CONTINUOUS OR MADE UP OF A NUMBER OF SECTIONS) ANDA METHOD TO INSTALL THIS STRIP HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO FIT INTO A ROUTED CHANNEL IN THE LIP OF THE HEARTH (WHICH CAN BE CONTINUOUS OR MADE UP OF ANY NUMBER SECTIONS) OR ONTO THE LIP. THE LIGHTING STRIP IS HELD IN PLACE BY USING ONE, SOME OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING METHODS, GLUE, ADHESIVE TAPE, DOWELS, PINS OR BRACKETS.
THIS LIGHTING STRIP PROVIDES FLOOR LIGHTING UNDERNEATH AND AROUND THE HEARTH.
PREVIOUSLY LIGHTING IN A FIREPLACE HAS ONLY EVER BE FITTED INTO THE
UNDERSIDE OF THE TOP OF THE SURROUND USING DOWNLIGHTS OR INTO THE LEGS OF THE SURROUND WHICH THEN DISPLAY LIGHT HORIZONTALLY ACROSS THE FIREPLACE OR ONTO THE WALL.
THE INVENTION GIVES LIGHTING AT FLOOR LEVEL UNDERNEATH THE LIP AND ONTO THE FLOOR AROUND THE HEARTH.
FLOOR LEVEL LIGHTING HAS IMPORTANT SAFETY APPLICATIONS. FIREPLACES BY THEIR VERY NATURE CAN BE VERY HOT AND LIGHTING WHICH CLEARLY IDENTIFIES THE BARRIER TO THE HEATING ELEMENTS IS IMPORTANT FOR CONSUMER SAFETY. FLOOR LIGHTING ALSO HAS AN AESTETHIC APPEAL WHICH OTHER FIREPLACE LIGHTS CANNOT GIVE. FLOOR LIGHTING CAN ILLUMINATE THE FEATURES OF THE FLOORING SURROUNDING THE HEARTH.
EXAMPLES OF THE INVENTION ARE DESCRIBED BELOW BY REFERRING TO THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS.
