No. 428,416
1 3 Claims. (Cl. 126-121) This invention relates to fireplaces and more particularly to imrovements in the manner in which they are constructed.
The apparatus of the invention is particularly novel in the manner of its construction in that it can be readily adapted for use in existing homes, apartments and the like, as well as incorporated in new constructions with a minimum of labor and expense.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a decorative prefabricated fireplace for gas or electric logs which are easily constructed and inexpensive.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a decorative fireplace which provides hundreds of decorative facings to complement any decor.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a decorative fireplace which eliminates the use of masonry.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a decorative fireplace which eliminates the necessity for special construction of floors, walls, ceilings and hearths, as well as costly fuels or masonry chimneys.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a decorative fireplace which may be readily installed in any room, house, apartment or the like.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description, taken with the accompanying drawings,
wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a frontal view of the invention with portions'of the front panel cut away to show internal construction.
FIGURE 2 is a partial isometric drawing of the construction taken through 22 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is taken through 3-3 of FIGURE 1 showing the construction of the invention.
FIGURE 4 illustrates the composition of the front panel and is taken through 44 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 5 illustrates the top construction and is taken through 55 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 6 is a top view of the invention take along line 66 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 7 is taken through 77 of FIGURE 1 and shows the trim and front panel construction.
FIGURE 8 is an isometric view of the fireplace itself.
FIGURE 9 illustrates the construction of the side mountings and trim.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, FIG- URE 1 illustrates a fireplace containing a gas log assembly 1 which may be completely or partially covered by a frontal screen 2. Firebox 3 comprises a floor member 4 supported on legs 44, three side wall members 5, which enclose the gas log assembly 1 on three sides leaving an open frontal hearth and including a top member 6 and a chimney vent 7. A limit control 7a is positioned in the top member 6 adjacent the chimney vent 7 to protect the fireplace in the event of obstructions in the chimney vent. The firebox 3 and chimney vent 7 are surrounded by an enclosure 30. This enclosure allows for a shipping height of approximately one-half the installed height of the unit and consists of two pieces, a
The entire assembly may be assembled in a corner, against a wall or in an alcove, and the assembly extends from the floor up to the ceiling of the room. Vertical side mounting rails 16 are positioned on the wall or walls 14 as illustrated in FIGURES 3 and 6 and affixed there by a fastening means 17. The front panel is placed on a ledge 18 above the top trim member 8 and a groove 19 on the bottom of the top grill member 12. Vertical channels 40 (see FIGURE 8) are welded or otherwise secured to enclosure 30 and each carries a protuberance 42 which abuts panel 10 securing same against movement on ledge 18. The vertical side mounting rails 16 are so sized by cutting or otherwise to compensate for varying ceiling heights. The vertical sidemounting rails 16 have a plurality of holes formed therein on their outermost surface and after the front panel is placed in position, a trim extrusion 22 is clipped into place by suitable clips 23 FIG- URE 3). This trim extrusion 22 has cemented thereon the desired trim strip 24 (referring to FIGURE 9).
Referring now to FIGURE 4, the front panel 10 carries a decorative trim strip 11 which may be cemented into place. The front panel may be of any thickness and is adjusted toward and against the trim extrusion 22 by an adjustable screw 25.
While the preferred embodiments of the invention have been illustrated and described herein, the invention is not to be construed as limited to the specific details disclosed herein, except as included in the following claims.
I claim:
1. A prefabricated fireplace, comprising: spaced upright side members; lower and intermediate transverse members extending between said side members adjacent the lower ends thereof; a firebox supported by said lower her extending between the tops of said side members, said upper member comprising a louvered ventilating panel; a cover panel removably resting on said intermedi ate member and extending upwardly to said upper memher and from one side member to the other; and cover strips removably carried by said side members and covering the juncture between said panel and said side members.
2. A prefabricated fireplace as defined in claim 1 including a transverse base extending between said side members, at the lower ends thereof, and spaced from said lower transverse member to define an air circulation space therebetween.
3. A prefabricated fireplace as defined in claim 1 wherein said upright side members include means for securing the same to walls of a room.
