Abstract

256,128. Hounsfield, L. H. Feb. 4, 1926. Springs, arrangement of. -A spring suspension for vehicles comprises a normal spring 1 in which the de. flection is approximately proportional to the load, and a second spring 4 so controlled that the normal spring is deflected over an initial range of light loads without stressing the second spring, further deflection producing successively decreasing increments in the deflection of the second spring 4 for successive equal increments of load. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the normal spring 1 is of the full or semi-cantilever type connected to the axle 2, the second spring 4 being a plate spring pivoted to a fixed abutment 6 on the frame of the vehicle and connected by a link 3 to the axle. The system is deflected from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2 without stressing the spring 4. Subsequently the spring 4 engages the abutment 6 and its effective length is decreased with increase of load. The arrangement is preferably such that the spring 1 is stressed to the safety limit when the spring 4 is in contact with the abutment over its entire length. The spring 4 may be arranged beneath the spring 1 which, as shown in Fig. 6, may be connected to the axle by a strap 7 which is slack during the initial range of light loading. The spring 4 preferably comprises a plate or plates of uniform section and radius of curvature.
