Abstract

255,950. Gibson, C. S. April 30, 1925. Plates, dishes, and the like, washing. -A series of cleaning members such as brushes are adapted to be moved into or out of contact with plates or similar shallow vessels which are supported so that they can be rotated when in contact with the brushes and whilst water is being supplied thereto. As shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 5, two shafts 2, 3 mounted in a casing 1 are provided with rollers 4 to support plates 5 which are located between strips 6 forming a rack-like structure. A shaft 7 carrying rollers 8 and passing through curved slots 10 is carried in arms 9 pivotally mounted on the shaft 2, so that the rollers 8 may be brought into contact with the plates 5. The shafts 2, 3 are adapted to be rotated by means of a gear wheel 13 operated manually or by power, the shaft 7 being driven, through sprocket and chain gearing, from the shaft 2. Brushes 20 on loosely mounted spindles 19 are located below the strips 6 and between the plates 5. The spindles 19 are secured to links 32, 33 pivotally mounted on slidable rods 29, 30, respectively, which are adapted to be actuated by rods 27, 28 connected to a bell-crank lever 26. This lever is attached to the shaft 23 connecting together the lower end of the arms 9, the arrangement being such that when the rollers 8 are caused to bear on the plates 5 the latter are engaged by the brushes 20. Water is supplied to the plates by means of a pipe 34 with branches 35 having duplex nozzles. In a modified construction, the pivoted arms 9 are dispensed with, the shaft 7 being carried on short pivoted arms and being driven indirectly from the shaft 2 and the brushes being moved into contact with the plates independently of the movement of the shaft 7. The brushes instead of being arranged in pairs, as shown, between adjacent plates, may be arranged singly and may be operated by means of a lever and a pair of sliding rods, the arrangement being such that on moving the lever into a certain position the brushes bear against both surfaces of a series of alternate plates, whilst on movement of the lever into a second position the intervening plates are engaged by the brushes. A modified construction employing brushes arranged singly is shown in Fig. 7, in which the brush spindles are provided with interengaging toothed wheels 41 adapted to be partly rotated by means of a toothed segment 42 provided with a handle 43. The handle can occupy two positions corresponding to the engagement of the brushes with one or other of two series of alternate plates.
