To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE A. SWAZEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Kennebec and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in that class of gun cleaning devices in which a continuous or endless and flexible swabbing device is run through the barrel of the gun by pulleys or similar devices supported in a detachable manner upon the barrel and breech, and the invention has for its primary object a simple, durable and efficient construction of device of this character, which will be easy to apply to the gun, which will be easy to handle and occupy very little space when not required for use and which will be composed of comparatively few parts that may be cheaply manufactured and easily assembled and not liable to get out of order.

lVith this and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.

For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gun cleaner embodying the improvements of my invention, showing its application; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the device; Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation, partly broken out, illustrating a portion of the breech member of the device, particularly the draft pulley thereof; Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through the draft pulley; Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the breech member; Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of the muzzle member of the attachment. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the breech member, opposite to the side shown in Fig. 6.

tudinally elongated frame 1 designed to be secured to the receiving end of a gun barrel in a detachable manner, as by straps 2 connected to the frame and adapted to be connected together around the gun. Mounted within the frame 1 and at one side thereof is a plate 3. Partition plates 4', and 5 are also mounted in said frame, and the plates are all arranged parallel to each other, as shown, in laterally spaced relation, the plates 4: and 5 being provided with rearwardly extending and obliquely" disposed extensions designated a and 5 respectively. A driving gear 6 is journaled in the extensions 4?, 5 and is provided with an operating crank 7, said crank being formed with a slot 8 designed to receive a pivoted handle 9, whereby the handle may be out of the way when the device is not desired for use. The driving gear 6 meshes with a driven gear or pinion 10 which is mounted in between the plates 1 and 5 and which forms part of or is connected to a draft pulley 11 designed to form one of the running supports for the endless flexible swabbing device S.

Preferably, the breech member B, in its specific construction, includes standards 12 that project from the opposite sides of the frame 1, one of said standards being connected to the partition plate 5 and by a brace block 13 to the intermediate plate 1. The other standard is connected to the plate 3, as clearly illustrated in the drawings.

The frame 1 is provided at its ends with blocks 14 to which extensions 15 of the plates 3 and 4 are connected, as by screws or similar devices, in order to increase the rigidity of the parts. The muzzle member M of my improved gun cleaner includes a head 16 which is formed with two right angularly disposed sides, as shown, designed to be engaged with any side of the barrel of the gun at the muzzle end thereof, straps 17 being connected to the head, whereby to clamp the muzzle member to the barrel. The said member also includes parallel arms 18 which are secured to and which project obliquely from the head 16, said arms having journaled between them, at their extremities, a supporting pulley 19 for the swab S.

It is to be understood that my invention is not limited to any particular form of swab. In the present instance the same embodies a flexible and suitably strong wire 20 upon which are strung wipers 21 of any desired shape or character, the same being preferably mounted to turn freely upon the wire and being held in predetermined spaced relation to each other by spacing washers 22 also strung on the wire. In order to apply the swab, the same is provided at one point with a bushing 23 adapted to be detachably held, as by frictional engagement or otherwise, in a socket 24 formed in one of the wipers 21. It will thus be'seen that the endless swabbing device may be broken at this point so as to render easy the application and removal of the device. The draft pulley 11 is formed in its grooved periphery with forked lugs 25, projecting outwardly in a radial direction, as shown, and so spaced from each other that they will engage the washers between the wipers 21 and effect a positive movement of the swab when the draft pulley is rotated.

From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation of my improved gun cleaning attachment will be apparent. In the practical use of the device, the breech member B is secured either to the top or to the side of the receiving end of the barrel, and the muzzle member M is correspondingly secured to the barrel at the muzzle end of the latter. By turning the main driving gear 6 after the swabbing device has been threaded through the barrel and the ends thereof fastened to produce an endless structure, a movement will be imparted to the swabbmg device to run the same as long as desired through the barrel and effectually clean the latter.

Obviously, the device can be very easily applied and also easily removed when not desired for use, at which time the parts may be arranged in a compact manner so as to be easily carried in a case or pocket.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A gun cleaning attachment, including a swab, a muzzle member embodying a pulley adapted to support the swab at the muzzle end of a gun barrel, and a breech member adapted to support the swab at the breech end of the barrel, said breech member embodying a frame adapted to be clamped to the gun, a plate secured to the frame, laterally spaced partition plates also secured to the frame and provided with extensions, a draft pulley journaled in the frame between one of said partition plates and the firstnamed plate and over which the swab is designed to travel, a pinion movable with the draft pulley and journaled between the partition plates, and a driving gear meshing with said pinion and j ournaled between the extensions of said partition plates.

2. A gun cleaning attachment, embodying an endless flexible swab, a muzzle member adapted to support said swab, and a breech member co-acting with the muzzle member in the support of the swab, the breech member embodying a frame, a plate mounted on the frame, inner and outer partition plates mounted on the frame, all of the plates being laterally spaced from each other, a draft pulley journaled in between the firstnamed plate and the adjoining plate and adapted to directly support the swab, a pinion journaled between the partition plates and movable with the draft pulley, a driving gear journaled in between said partition plates and meshing with said pinion, blocks secured to the ends of the frame and interposed between the first-named plate and the adjoining plate, which are formed with extensions connected to the side faces of said blocks, a standard connected to one side of the frame and to the first-named plate, and another standard connected to the opposite side of the frame and to the outer partition plate, the intermediate partition plate being provided with a brace block connected to said last named standard.
