TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a fuel pumping system of an injection equipment of an internal combustion engine and, more particularly to a camshaft and a driveshaft adapter cooperating to drive a pressurising pump and a feed pump.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
In a fuel injection equipment, a feed pump is arranged to flow low pressure fuel to a compression chamber arranged within a pumping and pressurisation equipment and, wherein said fuel is pressurised by a piston urged by a rotating camshaft. The feed pump is also driven in rotation by said camshaft via an end complementary registered in a rotor of the feed pump. The camshaft is a technically complex and costly component defining at least one cam member, a front and a rear bearing cylindrical faces and said end complementary to the rotor. The pumping equipment is a permanent target for performance and quality improvement ans, as a main component of said pumping and pressurisation equipment the camshaft is also subject to improvement and cost reduction.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to resolve the above mentioned problems in providing a pumping system of a fuel injection equipment of an internal combustion engine comprising a feed pump and a high pressure pump, wherein in use, the feed pump flows fuel to the high pressure pump. Said system has a body housing a front bearing and a rear bearing between which a camshaft is arranged to rotate about a camshaft axis so that, in use, it urges a piston of the high pressure pump and, it drives in rotation a rotor of the feed pump about said axis.
Advantageously, the camshaft comprises a main shaft member and a driveshaft adapter complementary engaged in said rotor of the feed pump.
Also, the driveshaft adapter is fixed at a rear end of the main shaft member.
Also, the driveshaft adapter extends from a first end fixed to the main shaft member to a second end registered into the rotor.
Also, the first end of the driveshaft adapter defines a cylindrical portion engaged in complementary recess provided at the rear end of the main shaft member. Also, Said recess extends under the rear bearing.
Also, the main shaft member and the driveshaft adapter are of different materials.
The driveshaft adapter is made out of a higher grade metal than the main shaft member. In a particular embodiment, the driveshaft adapter is made from 100Cr6 steel.
The invention also extends to a pumping system as described above wherein the driveshaft adapter is made out of a lower grade metal than the main shaft member.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The present invention is now described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a 3D view of a camshaft actuated fuel pumping system as per the invention, presented with a cutaway enabling internal visualisation.
Figure 2 is an axial section of the camshaft of the pumping system of figure
1.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
In reference to figure 1 a 3D view of a pumping system 10 of a fuel injection equipment of an internal combustion engine is presented, said pumping system 10 having a front side F oriented toward the back of the figure and, a rear side R more visible as being oriented toward the reader. Said pumping system 10 comprises a high pressure pump 12 and a feed pump 14 and in use, the pumping system is arranged in an injection equipment wherein fuel stored in a tank is drawn by the feed pump 14 and transferred to the high pressure pump 12 wherein the fuel is compressed and delivered to a pressurised reservoir, such as a common rail, and to fuel injectors.
The pumping system 10 has a body 16 comprising a main central member 18 to which are fixed a front plate member 22 and a feed pump housing 26. The main member 18 defines a high pressure pumping space S open on the front side F and a rear bearing outer cylinder 20. The large front opening is closed by the front plate 22 that defines a front bearing outer cylinder 24 aligned about a camshaft axis X with the rear bearing outer cylinder 20. The feed pump housing 26 is fixed on the rear side R of the main member opposite the front plate 22, the rear bearing outer face 20 opening on the rear side R in said feed pump housing 26. Representation is done with a cutaway portion enabling to see the inside of the pumping system.
Between the front 24 and the rear 20 bearing openings is axially X arranged a camshaft 28 having a cam member 30 between a front 32 and a rear 34 male bearing faces. On the front side F of the body, the camshaft 28 outwardly extends defining a front outer end 36 adapted to receive means, such as a pulley, to drive the camshaft in rotation and, on the rear side R of the main member 18 of the body, the camshaft outwardly extends in the feed pump 14, defining a rear end 38 engaged in a rotor 40 of the feed pump so that, in use, the pulley, or any other driving means, drives in rotation the camshaft and the rotor of the feed pump.
The high pressure pump 12 further comprises a pumping head 42 wherein fuel flowing from the feed pump 14 into a pumping chamber is pressurised by a piston 44 cooperating with the cam 30 and, is expelled toward a common rail and fuel injectors.
The camshaft 28, shown in axial section on figure 2, is a composite shaft comprising a main member 46 provided with the cam 30 and the two bearing male faces 32, 34 and, a driveshaft adapter 48 fixed to said main member 46 forming the rear end 38 of the camshaft. Although multiple alternatives fixation means are possible, the embodiment represented shows the main shaft member 46 provided on its rear end with an axial cylindrical recess 50 extending under the rear bearing face 34 and, the driveshaft adapter 48 is provided with a complementary male cylindrical portion 52 engaged with press-fit interference in the recess 50. The adapter 48 further comprises a rotor interface end 54 adapted to engage and register in the rotor 40 of the feed pump. As mentioned, the connection between the main member and the adapter can be welded, threaded or using other known fixation means. In case of a threaded interface, the thread turns in the opposite direction to the rotation so it tightens with rotation of the camshaft. Also, the rotor interface end 54 shown is a spline interface that is a typical feed pump interface but other interfaces are known.
Thanks to the composite assembly and the added driveshaft adapter 48, the material selected for the main shaft member 46 differs from the material of said driveshaft adapter 48. Indeed, a higher grade steel, such as 100Cr6, can be selected for the adapter 48 while a lower grade steel, such as 16MnCrS5, can be used steel can be used for the main shaft member 46. Other material options are possible and, a lower grade steel may be chosen for the adapter 48 than for the steel of the main member 46.
Also, in case of a recess 50 and male portion 52 press-fit connection, a pm interference requiring a 20kN insertion force at room temperature can be chosen or, to lower said insertion force, eventually down to zero Newton, the main shaft member 46 can be heated to a temperature which expands the part enough to allow a heat shrink process, this may be around 300°C. In alternative embodiments, other parameters, interference and press force options are possible as long as drive torque is successfully transmitted.
The description is made using a pumping system 10 having only one pressurising unit with only one piston cooperating with one cam and, pumping systems having several pressurising unit with as many cams and pistons can also benefit from the invention of an added feed pump adapter 48 made of a different material.
