Abstract
255,506. Asquith (1920), Ltd., W., Asquith, J. W. S., and Feather, G. Feb. 24, 1925. Drilling-machines.-In drilling-machines having means for simultaneously locking the parts connected with the spindle adjustments automatically when the feed is put into operation, the locking is performed by power on the operation of a press-button or other control member. As applied to a radial-arm drilling-machine a lever A, which is actuated by the press-button or a hand-lever &c., actuates a clutch B splined on a continuously rotating shaft b to engage it with a clutch C loose on the shaft and connected to a worm D gearing with a worm-wheel E. A disc G attached to the worm-wheel carries a crank-pin g<3> connected by a link g<4> to a locking shaft F which locks the spindle-carriage to the radial-arm by means of a pinion J, rack j, another rack and pinion j<2>, and a screw clamping device j<4>, and may also operate other locking devices. The power feed is derived from a continuously rotating shaft h<4> which drives, through worm gearing H and a clutch h<6>, a shaft h' having a pinion h<2> engaging the spindle-rack h<3>. With the parts as shown in the Figure, the power feed is engaged, and on actuating the lever A the shaft F is oscilleted to unlock the spindle adjustments, and simultaneously, by means of a cam h<12> and lever h<10>, to disengage the feed-clutch h<6>. After making half a revolution the disc G allows an arm g<2> on the lever A to drop into a recess g, thusbringing the locking shaft F to rest. On thenext actuation of the lever A the shaft F is oscillated in the reverse direction to lock the adjustments, and simultaneously the cam h<12> allows a spring h<7> to engage the feed-clutch h<6>. The shaft F is brought to rest again by a second recess g on the disc G.
