Drilling-machines.-A rail-drilling machine with an horizontal drilling-spindle has means whereby the tool is withdrawn at a much quicker rate than it is advanced, by the use of ratchet and bevelgearing. The tool spindle is driven from a shaft d by means of equal bevel-gearing e, e' or unequal bevel-gearing f, f<1>, the wheels e, f, of which are mounted on the shaft d and adapted to be alternatively engaged thereto by a sliding key i<1>, while the wheels e<1>,f<1> are together on the spindle g which drives the tool spindle l by bevel-gearing k. On the forward end of the tool spindle is a cam m, which oscillates, by means of levers m<1>, n<1>, n', a double-armed lever n, to one end of which is fixed a lever actuating a pawl s, and to the other end are fixed a lever for actuating a pawl s<1> and a pawl r. In advancing the drill spindle, the pawl r drives a ratchet-wheel p mounted on a screwed sleeve o, slidably keyed to a bearing 7 and rotatably mounted on the spindle l, which is thereby moved longitudinally by a pin in the sleeve engaging a groove in the spindle, either of the driving-gearings being in action. For retraction, the pawl r is disengaged, and a reverse ratchet-wheel q, also mounted on the screwed sleeve o, is operated at each oscillation of the lever n by the pawls s, s', the gearing e, e' being in action, whereby a rapid retraction is achieved.
