Abstract

255,366. Gardner, L. T., and Jording, C. A. March 6, 1926. Sunken objects, indicating position of. - In apparatus for locating and raising sunken submarine vessels of the type in which a buoy carried by the vessel is released and raises a cable forming a guide rope down which a lifting grab is lowered and guided into engagement with a coupling member on the vessel, a casing 12, Figs. 1 and 4, secured to the submarine hull 10, has an upwardly-flaring open end forming a seat for the buoy 25 and an inlet for the grab 41. A pair of pawls 38 having means to limit their upward movement are mounted in the casing, and the head of the grab engages below the pawls. A drum for the buoy cable 22 which forms the guide rope is provided with winding means capable cf being disengaged from the drum. The casing 12 has a rectangular-sectioned lower part 14, with oppositely-located semi-cylindrical portions 15 containing the pawls 38. At the lower end of the casing 12 is a cylindrical chamber 16, Fig. 1, within which is located the drum 21. One end of the shaft 20 of the drum projects into a gear housing 18 and carries a gear-wheel 27 with which meshes a second wheel 28. The shaft carrying the wheel 28 is slidable and carries, outside the casing 18, a ratchet wheel 30, shifting mechanism 32, 35 by means of which the gear-wheels 27, 28 may be disengaged to release the drum and allow the buoy to sink, and a handle 36.
