Carding-engines.- The cylinders f, g, h, Fig. 1, of a set of carding-machines arranged in series are driven by gearing i, k, from a single shaft a running longitudinally of the engine and preferably operated by a motor b. If the carding-machines are arranged side by side the common driving shaft extends transversely. The shaft a is preferably arranged under the floor. The common shaft may be driven by a belt and gearing from a line shaft, and the condensing system may be driven directly from this train of gearing.
