Abstract
A single signal-variant power supply 28 controlled by a control circuit 20 provides electrical energy to a plurality of amplifiers 26. A typical application may be in a personal multi-channel audio device where efficient amplification and minimized component count are desirable. The control circuit, having at least one input for receiving a respective signal for each of the amplifiers, monitors the signals and outputs at least one control signal to set the level of the power supply to meet the respective requirements of each of the amplifiers. The supply voltage may be set to the maximum of the minimum power supply levels required by each amplifier. The monitored signal content may include a voltage level, current level or in-band spectral content, and the supply level may be set based on frequency or time-domain analysis, power consumption optimisation or target distortion level. Required signal characteristics may be transmitted using an analogue or digital communications protocol. A method of setting a common power supply level based on respective signals and requirements associated with a plurality of amplifiers is also provided.
