Abstract

A mechanism for actuating a door handle sanitizer spray 2 comprising a spring loaded folded material 5a positioned to extend around the line of the open edge of the door 6 (see figure 2). The material protrudes from the door edge when the door is open (not shown). When the door is closed, the door press mechanism 5a is forced flat by the door frame which pushes the mechanism 5a sideways, guided by the restraint guide plate 4, and causes the spray head activator 5b to depress the spray head 10 which is housed and positioned in a housing 9. The depressed spray head 10 sprays a short stream of sanitizer onto the door handle 7. The spray actuating member 5a, 5b preferably comprises a single component and is in constant contact with the spray head.

Description

Door Handle Sanitizer
This invention relates to an automatic door handle sanitizer.
Door handles harbour bacteria through general use. To automatically sanitise a door handle after every use, the present invention proposes a mechanism fitted to the door which depresses a pump action capsule of sanitizer so as to spray sanitizer directly onto the door handle. The present invention is able to sanitize the handle automatically (and with no electrical/battery power) because the sanitizer (through the kinetic movement of the door) pushes the door press mechanism into the door frame, which in turn pushes itself onto the spray head (due to the door press mechanism and spray head activator being one single component which is pushed sideways onto the spray head).
The invention allows the door handle to be sanitised automatically without need for regular wiping or cleaning.
People using the handle can be reassured that they are not touching a handle which could transfer bacteria onto their hand.
Due to the activator and door press being the same component powered by the kinetic movement of the door closing, there is no need for electrical/battery power, and the number of required components is minimal which considerably reduces the need for maintenance and repair. There is also no need for a sensor to sense when the door has been opened or closed, to then activate the spray of the sanitizer.
As the present invention has minimal components it can remain relatively small in relation to the door handle it is sanitizing, which means that it is not unsightly in relation to the aesthetic of the door.
Preferably (but not essentially) components 3, 4, 9 will be mounted onto one backing plate to aid in the installation.
Preferably (but not essentially) components 3, 4 & 9 will have a cover to house them in order to stop items being caught in them.
The invention will be further explained by the following drawings: - • Figure 1 - Shows the mechanism in 3D perspective. It shows the mechanism attached to the door, sitting just above the door handle. • Figure 2 - shows the mechanism in aerial view with the door closed. • Figure 3 - Is a 'front on' view of the mechanism showing the Door Press Mechanism while it is fully depressed within the door frame, hence being moved sideways and depressing the spray head activator section onto the spray head. The invention is best explained in Figure 1. Figure 1 shows a Door Press Mechanism 5a which is a folded sheet material (preferably but not essentially a hard wearing metal). The folded section of the Door Press Mechanism is positioned within inside section of a door so as to protrude passed the line of the door edge (the edge of door visible when opened), and also just above the door handle to be sanitized. The door press mechanism 5a is a spring loaded folded material, so it is open and protruding when the door is open, but then pushed closed when the door is closed and the folded material is pushed within the doorjamb. When the door is closed, the door press mechanism 5a is forced flat within the door frame. This movement pushes the Door Press mechanism 5a sideways, guided by the Restraint Guide Plate 4, onto the Spray Flead 10 which is housed and positioned in the Housing/Locator Unit 9. The depressed Spray Head 10 in turn sprays a short stream of sanitizer from Spray Capsule 2 onto the Door Handle 7.
Figure 3 shows the invention during the full operation of sanitizing the door handle. Figure 3 shows the Door Press Mechanism 5a fully depressed into the door frame and forced flat when the door 6 is closed. This has in turn pushed the Door Press Mechanism 5a through the Guide Plate 4 onto the spray head 10 which is housed within the Housing Unit 9.

Claims (6)

Claims
1. A folded sheet material placed within the edge of a door so as to protrude passed the edge of door line (and above a door handle), which is pushed into the door frame when closed, causing a sideways movement of the same component which depresses the Spray Head on a capsule of sanitizer spray placed above the door handle in line of the sanitizer spray when dispersed, therefore coating the handle in sanitizer.
2. The actuating member (Door Press Mechanism and Spray Head activator) as referenced in claim 1 powered with only the power of the kinetic movement of the door, forcing the Spray Head Activator onto the Spray Head negating the need for electrical/battery power assistance to power the actuating member, and negating the need for sensors to confirm when the door has been opened and closed.
3. The Actuating Member (Door Press Mechanism and Spray Head Activator) as referenced in Claim 1, being a single moving component negates the need for separate multiple components to actuate the Spray Head.
4. The Actuating Member as referenced in Claim 1 is in direct connection with the spray head at all times and only actuates the Spray Head when it is pushed sideways by the door pushing the protruding section flat and sideways onto the spray head, only when the door is opened (hence releasing the folded section to protrude), then the door closing (hence pushing the Actuating member sideways as described.
5. The Actuating Member as referenced in Claim 1 being a folded component which springs back to a protruding position when the door is opened, hence resetting the component ready for the next time the door is opened to then subsequently depress the spray head next time it is closed within the door frame and pushed sideways into an activating movement by being pushed onto the spray head.
6. The invention as referenced in Claims 1 being a compact unit with one moving component positioned close to the door handle to be as obscure as possible
