Abstract

254,780. British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd., and Groldbourn, J. April 3, 1925. Expanding-pulley gearing comprises a small round band 51 passing over a driving expanding pulley with interpenetrating cone flanges 17, 21 over a driven pulley 53 of fixed diameter, and over a weighted or like tensioning jockey 65. The invention is specially applicable to shoe-upper perforating-machines. The tread members 17, 21 turn loosely upon a shaft 7, which is secured at one end to a supporting bracket 3 under a work table 1, and is bored for lubrication. The tread member 17 is driven constantly by a band 11<11> engaging a pulley 11 upon the member, which tread member thus drives the other member 21. An elbow lever 37 supported on a bracket 31 on the end of the shaft 7 is controlled by a treadle link 45 and is connected by a link 49 to a suitable trip declutching-device 55, which functions automatically at a definite point in the cycle of operations. When the machine is to be started, the treadle is depressed. The machine is clutched in, and afterwards the lever 37 acts to thrust the pulley flange 21 to the right to increase the speed as desired. When the machine is to be stopped, the treadle is eased, and the lever 37 moves back, allowing the flange 21 to move outwards against a fixed washer 32, so that the machine is driven at a definite low speed. The trip device 55 is now free and acts to declutch at the proper moment to stop the machine in a definite position. To simplify construction, the drive from one pulley flange to the other is adapted to take place at a definite point. A plate 24, Fig. 3, is fitted for the purpose, or accurately-fitting pins might be used.
