Abstract
A combustion apparatus comprises a combustion chamber (1) having a cylindrical wall extending between first and second end walls (2, 3). A feed inlet (4) for combustible material extends through the first end wall (2) or through thecylindrical wall adjacent to the first end wall, and a combustion gas outlet (9) passes through the centre of the second wall (3). An air inlet (12) is connected to a blower (11), the air inlet extending through the cylindrical wall to direct a flow of air, in use, offset from the central longitudinal axis of the chamber whereby to cause a flow circulation around the cylindrical wall within the chamber. A tube (15) extends axially along the chamber and through the centre of the combustion gas outlet (9), the tube (15) containing an auger (16) to convey particulate material from a feed (18) outside the chamber, through the first end wall (2) to discharge outside the chamber. The apparatus may be used for drying material or for combusting additional material.
Description
BURNER
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a combustion apparatus suitable for combusting waste materials.
Background to the Invention
The generation of waste is a great burden to society and infrastructure. Governments are being required to manage both domestic and commercial waste on massive scales in a manner that is sustainable over the long term. The task of dealing with the vast variety of materials in an efficient manner is therefore a challenging one.
One of the main problems when handling domestic and commercial waste materials is the generation of toxic and/or hazardous compounds which originate from the materials themselves and/or residual compounds contained within the waste. Initial processing of these materials liberates these compounds and can facilitate secondary reactions which produce further harmful compounds. This problem is exemplified when handling waste construction industry fibre board. During the initial processing the fibre board is broken down into small pieces, thereby exposing the harmful adhesives and preservatives contained within the board products.
Conventional management schemes involve deposition within land-fill sites. This is not sustainable in the long term and has environmental consequences. Other schemes involve large scale incineration to generate electricity, but this often leads to large emissions of harmful gases. WO2015033170A1 discloses a combustion apparatus suitable for combusting waste material, having a cylindrical combustion chamber with a feed in an end wall of the combustible material and an offset air feed to create a swirling combustion. Hot gases exit through the opposite end wall to the solids feed, and any solid residue is removed through an outlet at the lowest point in the cylinder wall, by means of an auger.
Summary of the Invention
According to the invention, a combustion apparatus comprises a combustion chamber having a cylindrical wall extending between first and second end walls, a feed inlet for combustible material extending through the first end wall or through the cylindrical wall adjacent to the first end wall, a combustion gas outlet through the centre of the second wall, an air inlet connected to a blower, the air inlet extending through the cylindrical wall to direct a flow of air, in use, offset from the central longitudinal axis of the chamber whereby to cause a flow circulation around the cylindrical wall within the chamber, and a tube extending axially along the chamber and through the centre of the combustion gas outlet, the tube containing an auger to convey particulate material from a feed outside the chamber, through the first end wall to discharge outside the chamber.
The tube is preferably provided with perforations therethrough at least on an upper surface thereof. The feed outside the chamber may comprise a hopper. A receiving vessel may be provided outside the chamber for receiving particulate material discharged by the auger.
The combustion apparatus of the invention can be used for drying particulate materials or for combusting materials, for example waste material, unsuitable for feed to the combustion chamber direct, for example because excessive moisture content or where a greater dwell time for the combustion process is required in order to achieve complete combustion. The speed of the auger within the tube may be varied to enable the dwell time to be optimised.
The combustion apparatus of the invention is configured to burn waste materials of all types, and is suitable for burning waste wood-based materials such as chipboard containing adhesives, where a high combustion temperature is necessary to avoid the discharge of toxic or harmful gases.
The combustion gases from the apparatus may be passed through a heat exchanger to extract useful energy and then to particulate filters/cleaners to ensure that the final discharge to the atmosphere meets appropriate standards.

Detailed Description of the Illustrated Embodiment
The combustion apparatus comprises a cylindrical combustion chamber 1, suitably formed of steel lined with refractory material such as a refractory cement. Thermal insulation material may also be incorporated to minimise heat losses from the chamber. The chamber has first and second end walls 2 and 3, the first end wall 2 having an inlet 4 through which an auger 5 delivers comminuted waste material 6 from a feed hopper 7. The auger is driven by an electric motor 8 whose speed can be controlled to deliver the waste material at a desired rate to maintain full combustion. A central outlet 9 is provided in the second wall for the hot combustion gases to be conducted via a flue 10 to a heat exchanger/boiler (not shown), where useful energy can be recovered, for example by a steam-driven electricity generator. Other uses include process heating for manufacturing, and district heating. A blower 11 supplies air for the combustion process through an inlet 12 through the cylindrical wall of the combustion chamber 1 in a generally tangential direction to the inner cylindrical surface so as to create a rotary air flow within the combustion chamber. The inlet 12 preferably includes a fuel oil spray nozzle and associated igniter, represented at 13, used at the start of the combustion process to heat the combustion chamber to a sufficient temperature to support combustion of the waste material. When this achieved, the fuel oil supply can be turned off. It will be appreciated that other starter fuels could be employed, for example methane/natural gas. A tube 15 passes through the first end wall 2 to extend along the axis of the chamber 1 to pass through the centre of the outlet 9 and through the wall of the flue 10. The tube 15 contains a second auger 16, driven by a variable-speed electric motor 17, to convey material from a secondary feed hopper 18 to a discharge chute 19 for collection of any residual material in a container 20. The tube 15 is provided with a plurality of apertures therethrough along the uppermost part of the tube for the release of any gases into the combustion chamber. The tube and the auger are suitably formed of a heat resistant steel or possibly of a ceramic material or a combination of such materials.
It is envisaged that the combustion apparatus of the invention can be used in either of two modes: 1. Drying of particulate material, the speed of the second auger 16 being such that the material resides in the combustion chamber for a time sufficient to achieve the desired level of dryness but without melting or combusting the material; and 2. Additional combustion material unsuited, for example because of moisture content, for direct feed into the combustion chamber via the feed hopper 7 and its associated auger 5. In this case, the second auger 16 will be run slower to increase the residence time of the material in the combustion chamber to ensure complete combustion.
In the first case, the dried material is collected in the container 20, while in the second case the combustion residue or ash is collected.
While the apparatus as illustrated has the feed of solid waste material at the upper side of the first end wall 2, it will be appreciated that the feed could be positioned at the lower part of the end wall or at an intermediate position. The combustion air inlet can also be positioned below or above the central axis of the chamber.

A combustion apparatus comprising a combustion chamber having a cylindrical wall extending between first and second end walls, a feed inlet for combustible material extending through the first end wall or through the cylindrical wall adjacent to the first end wall, a combustion gas outlet through the centre of the second wall, an air inlet connected to a blower, the air inlet extending through the cylindrical wall to direct a flow of air, in use, offset from the central longitudinal axis of the chamber whereby to cause a flow circulation around the cylindrical wall within the chamber, and a tube extending axially along the chamber and through the centre of the combustion gas outlet, the tube containing an auger to convey particulate material from a feed outside the chamber, through the first end wall to discharge outside the chamber.
2. A combustion apparatus according to Claim 1, wherein the tube is provided with perforations therethrough at least on an upper surface thereof.
3. A combustion apparatus according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein the feed outside the chamber comprises a hopper.
4. A combustion apparatus according to Claim 1, 2 or 3, comprising a receiving vessel outside the chamber for receiving particulate material discharged by the auger.
5. A combustion apparatus according to any preceding claim, comprising a variable-speed drive for the auger.
6. A combustion apparatus, substantially as described with reference to the drawings.
