Blocks and shoes acting on drums; force-transmitting mechanism; compensating for wear. - Steering-wheel brake operating mechanism comprises a brake-shoe actuating arm swivelling with the wheel and engaged by a lever not swivelling with the wheel at a point which is moved in applying the brakes from a position normally spaced some distance from the steering axis to a position in that axis when the brake is applied. As shown in Fig. 1, the brake shoes are expanded by a cam 136, the spindle 140 of which carries an arm 138, the spherical end of which is engaged by a lever 146 pivoted at 148 on the axle 114, the point of engagement between the arm and the lever moving into the axis of the steering point 112 when the brake is applied. The arm 138 is adapted to be clamped in an angularly adjustable position on the spindle 140, the engaging parts being serrated as shown and flats 142 being provided on the spindle for engagement with a tool for effecting the adjustment. In Fig. 2, the cam lever 230 is shown as upturned and the lever 234 fulcrummed on a pin 238 secured to an inclined socket on the head of the steering pivot 212. Specification 254,478 is referred to.
