Abstract

254,510. Clark, D'A. M., (Bendix Brake Co.). July 1, 1925. Addition to 254,478. Blocks and shoes acting on drums; force-transmitting mechanism; hand and other personal actuation.-Operating mechanism for the brakes of vehicle steering-wheels of the kind described in the parent Specification comprises a cam arm or other member swivelling with the wheels and connected to a cable or like tension-operating member, the joint between the two members being moved when the brakes are applied from a position forwardly of the swivelling axis to one such that the braking pressure on the outer wheel is relieved while that on the inner wheel is suhstantially unaffected. The mechanism is shown as applied to an internal shoe brake in which the cam spindle is disposed radially with respect to the drum. This brake comprises shoes 44, 50 pivoted respectively at 48, 52 on the cover plate 46 and a third shoe, 54 connected to the shoe, 50 by a free pivot, the shoe 54 applying the. shoe 50 by a .servo-action. The shoes 44, 54 are applied to the drum by a cam 60 on a vertical spindle mounted in bearings 64, 66 carried by the anchor plate 46 and actuated by an arm 74. To render the arm. 74 .adjustable in relation to the cam it is loosely sleeved on the cam spindle and is provided with a lug 72 engaging a set screw 70 on a member 68 secured to the cam or its spindle. A pair of cables extends each from an arm on a. transverse rock shaft to the arm 74 of one of the front wheel brakes. The cables are supported by idler arms or pulleys disposed on the chassis frame opposite the rear ends of the front springs so that the tension of the cables is unaffected by the movement of the springs, The arms 74 may be adjusted in relation to the cam spindles so that when the 'brakes are applied the end of each arm lies on the inner side of the plane passing through the axis of the steering pivot 38 in the direction of straight running so that the braking action on the outer wheel is reduced but that on the inner wheel is substantially unaffected. The rear wheel brakes may be connected to a second transverse rock shaft connected for simultaneous operation by a pedal with that of the front brakes. A hand lever is also provided for operating the rear brakes.
