Abstract

254,268. Stuart, A. T. June 27, 1925, [Convention date]. Hydrogen and oxygen, obtaining; cells; diaphragms; electrodes.-In a cell for the electrolvsis of water the electrodes consist of thin metal strips 1<a> - 1f, Fig. 7, alternately of opposite polarity, the planes of which lie in the direction of current flow. Each electrode may consist of a number of parallel strips threaded on tierods 7 and provided with staggered buttons 6 for spacing, as shown in section in Fig. 8. Alternate electrodes are surrounded by diaphragms 5 secured to the base of a partition 11 depending from the roof 10 of the cell. Gas generated within the diaphragms passes through openings 11<a> in the base and withdrawn by a duct 14. Gas generated outside the diaphragms is led by horizontal channels 12 to outside the partition 11 and rises to the roof 10 whence it is withdrawn by a duct 13. The negative electrodes are provided with central terminals 2 connected to conductors 4, and the positive electrodes are similarly connected to conductors 3, supported by the roof. Electrolyte is supplied from a reservoir 15. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 215,355.
