Abstract
An excavator or backhoe bucket has a central section and side sections that may extend from or contract into the central section to alter the width of the bucket. A double acting hydraulic ram may be located on the bucket and may be used extend or retract the sides in a telescopic manner allowing the sides to move to the centre when the bucket is narrowed, or away from the centre when the bucket is widened. The bucket width may be adjusted from within the excavator cab. The objectives of the device include reducing the number of buckets that are required, minimising the dangers associated with bucket changing and to allow the bucket width to be adjusted to the precise width that is required.

Hydraulic Extending Digger Bucket
Description
Application for Digger and Excavator Buckets. Various size buckets contained in one bucket. Telescopic bucket leafs overlapping within host bucket housing. Double acting hydraulic ram located within bucket housing will extend the stages of the bucket to required size. The bucket will have at least two stages within host bucket that will be extended by the double acting hydraulic ram.
Fig.01 shows the bucket in its smallest form which would be the 'original' size with the extending sections stored.
Fig.02 shows the bucket in an extended position with the extending sections pushed out to full extent by the double acting hydraulic ram.
Each extending section is approx. 80% of 'original' size extending from each side. The telescopic arrangement allows for the sections to be stored to original bucket size.
The sliding action of the telescopic sections will allow the hydraulic ram to push and pull the sections by sliding action.
Claims (5)
1. The main technical feature of this invention is that the telescopic extending Digging bucket can be extended to allow the excavator operator to choose the correct bucket size to excavate without having to change the bucket. The bucket size can simply be selected by operating the hydraulic double acting ram that connected to the machines hydraulic system. This operation can be done from the cab of the machine with no requirement to change buckets.
2. There will be no need for transporting numerous buckets with the excavator. The telescopic extending bucket will fit all sizes
3. Less bucket changes reduces the risk of buckets falling off excavators and causing injury or death to site personnel.
4. Excavators without fully automatic quick hitches will no longer need to manually change the buckets by the operator. Most contractors in UK require machines with semi-automatic hitches to record every bucket change to ensure the connection is secure. The extending bucket will reduce greatly this requirement.
5. Efficiency - Machine buckets come in a fixed set of sizes. Sometimes the operator will use the nearest size bucket that they have on site to excavate trenches. This could be approx. 20% larger than required. This will generate a lot of waste with muck away and fill materials. With the telescopic variable extending bucket, the operator can select the exact size required as there are no predefined sizes for the extensions
