Description

APPARATUS FOR USE IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY
This invention relates to apparatus for use in the fashion industry. More especially, this invention relates to apparatus for use in the fashion industry and which is able to be used by persons such for example as pattern cutters and dress makers.
In the fashion industry, persons such for example as pattern cutters and dress makers traditionally use a pattern notcher, a tracing wheel, a pattern drill and a bradawl. The persons may also optionally use a seam unpicker, a screwdriver and a thread cutter. These various tools are often not readily to hand when they are required.
It is an aim of the present invention to obviate or reduce the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided apparatus for use in the fashion industry, which apparatus comprises; (i) a head portion; (ii) first and second arms; (iii) a first pivot which pivotally connects a first end portion of the first arm to the head portion; (iv) a second pivot which pivotally connects a first end portion of the second arm to the head portion, and the apparatus being such that: (v) the first and second arms are pivotable about the first and second pivots between an open position in which the first and second arms extend in a diverging manner away from the head portion, and a closed position in which the first and second arms extend over the head portion and parallel to each other; (vi) the head portion comprises third and fourth arms; (vii) the third and fourth arms pivot about a third pivot; (viii) the third arm has a first end portion which pivotally connects to the first pivot; (ix) the fourth arm has a first end portion which pivotally connects to the second pivot; (x) the third arm has a second end portion, the fourth arm has a second end portion, and the second end portions of the third and fourth arms comprise a pattern notcher; (xi) the third arm is so pivotally connected to the first arm and the fourth arm is so pivotally connected to the second arm that, in the open position of the apparatus, the third arm acts as an extension of the first arm and the fourth arm acts as an extension of the second arm, whereby squeezing of the first and second arms causes squeezing of the third and fourth arms and consequent operation of the pattern notcher; (xii) the third arm is so pivotally connected to the first arm and the fourth arm is so pivotally connected to the second arm that, from the open position of the apparatus, the first and second arms are pivotable away from each other and about the first and second pivots to move from the open position to the closed position: (xiii) the first arm has a second end portion; (xiv) the second arm has a second end portion; and (xv) at least one of the second end portion of the first arm and the second end portion of the second arm has a tracing wheel, a pattern drill and a bradawl.
The apparatus of the present invention is advantageous in that the pattern notcher, the tracing wheel, the pattern drill and the bradawl are always available together. In addition, the apparatus of the present invention is easily convertible between the open and closed positions, and is compact in the closed position.
The apparatus of the present invention may be one in which one of the second end portion of the first arm and the second end portion of the second arm has a seam un-picker and/or a screwdriver and/or a thread cutter.
Preferably, the apparatus is one in which the second end portion of the first arm has the tracing wheel and the thread cutter, and in which the second end portion of the second arm has the pattern drill, the bradawl, the seam unpicker and the screwdriver.
The apparatus may be one in which the tracing wheel and the thread cutter are pivotally connected to the second end portion of the first arm by a fourth pivot such that they are pivotable between an open position in which they are ready for use and a closed position in which they are stored and lie alongside the first arm, and in which the pattern drill, the bradawl, the seam un-picker and the screwdriver are pivotally connected to the second end portion of the second arm by a fifth pivot such that they are pivotable between an open position in which they are ready for use and a closed position in which they are stored and lie alongside the second arm.
The apparatus of the present invention may include first abutment means for enabling the pivotal connection of the third arm to the first arm to be such that the third arm is able to act as the extension of the first arm, and second abutment means for enabling the pivotal connection of the fourth arm to the second arm to be such that the fourth arm is able to act as the extension of the second arm.
The pattern notcher may have replacement means for enabling different pattern notchers to be used.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows apparatus for use in the fashion industry and in a position in which all the parts of the apparatus are best viewed;
Figure 2 shows the apparatus of Figure 1 in an open position in which first and second arms of the apparatus extend in a diverging manner away from a head portion of the apparatus; and
Figure 3 shows the apparatus of Figure 1 in a closed position in which the first and second arms extend over the head portion and parallel to each other.
Referring to the drawings, there is apparatus 2 for use in the fashion industry, which apparatus 2 comprises: (i) a head portion 4; (ii) first and second arms 6, 8; (iii) a first pivot 10 which pivotally connects the first end portion 12 of the first arm 6 to the head portion 4; (iv) a second pivot 14 which pivotally connects a first end portion 16 of the second arm 8 to the head portion 4, and the apparatus 2 being such that: (v) the first and second arms 6, 8 are pivotable about the first and second pivots 10, 12 between an open position in which the first and second arms 6, 8 extend in a diverging manner away from the head portion 4, and a closed position in which the first and second arms 6, 8 extend over the head portion 4 and parallel to each other; (vi) the head portion 4 comprises third and fourth arms 18, 20; (vii) the third and fourth arms 18, 20 pivot about a third pivot 22; (viii) the third arm 18 has a first end portion 24 which pivotally connects to the first pivot 10; (ix) the fourth arm 20 has a first end portion 26 which pivotally connects to the second pivot 14; (x) the third arm 18 has a second end portion 28, the fourth arm 20 has a second end portion 30, and the second end portions 28, 30 of the third and fourth arms 18, 20 comprise a pattern notcher 32; (xi) the third arm 18 is so pivotally connected to the first arm 6 and the fourth arm 20 is so pivotally connected to the second arm 8 that, in the open position of the apparatus 2, the third arm 18 acts as an extension of the first arm 6 and the fourth arm 20 acts as an extension of the second arm 8, whereby squeezing of the first and second arms 6, 8 causes squeezing of the third and fourth arms 18, 20 and consequent operation of the pattern notcher 32; (xii) the third arm 18 is so pivotally connected to the first arm 6 and the fourth arm 20 is so pivotally connected to the second arm 8 that, from the open position of the apparatus 2, the first and second arms 6, 8 are pivotable away from each other and about the first and second pivots 10, 14 to move from the open position to the closed position; (xiii) the first arm 6 has a second end portion 34; (xiv) the second arm 8 has a second end portion 36; and (xv) at least one of the second end portion 34 of the first arm 6 and the second end portion 36 of the second arm 8 has a tracing wheel 38, a pattern drill 40 and a bradawl 42.
As can be seen from the drawings, the apparatus 2 is one in which the second end portion 34 of the first arm 6 and the second end portion 36 of the second arm 8 has a seam un-picker 44 and/or a screwdriver 46 and/or a thread cutter 48. More specifically, the apparatus 2 is one in which the second end portion 34 of the first arm 6 has the tracing wheel 38 and the thread cutter 48, and in which the second end portion 36 of the second arm 8 has the pattern drill 40, the bradawl 42, the seam un-picker 44 and the screwdriver 46.
The tracing wheel 38 and the thread cutter 48 are pivotally connected to the second end portion 34 of the first arm 6 by a fourth pivot 50 such that they pivot between an open position as shown in Figure 1 in which they are ready for use, and a closed position as shown in Figures 2 and 3 in which they are stored and lie alongside the first arm 6. The pattern drill 40, the bradawl 42, the seam un-picker 44 and the screwdriver 46 are pivotally connected to the first end portion 16 of the second arm 8 by a fifth pivot 52 such that they are pivotable between an open position as shown in Figure 1 in which they are ready for use, and a closed position as shown in Figures 2 and 3 in which they are stored and lie alongside the second arm 8.
The apparatus 2 includes first abutment means 54 for enabling the pivotal connection of the third arm 18 to the first arm 6 to be such that the third arm 18 is able to act as an extension of the first arm 6. The apparatus 2 also includes second abutment means 56 for enabling the pivotal connection of the fourth arm 20 to the second arm 8 to be such that the fourth arm 20 is able to act as the extension of the second arm 8.
The pattern notcher 32 is a rectangular male member 58 which is received in a rectangular recess 60. A spring 62 biases the pattern notcher 32 to its open position. A pin 64 on the fourth arm 20 abuts against an end of a slot 66 in the third arm 18 to restrict the degree of opening of the pattern notcher 32.
The apparatus of the present invention is compact, easy to use, and easy to move between its open and closed positions. The force required for operation of the pattern notcher 32 is easily accomplished by an appropriate squeezing pressure on the second and third end portions 34, 36 of the first arm 6 and the second arm 8 respectively. The tracing wheel 38, the pattern drill 40, the bradawl 42, the seam un-picker 44, the screwdriver 46 and the thread cutter 48 are easily pivoted between their open and closed positions. The pivoting is inwardly when the apparatus is as viewed in Figure 2, as indicated by arrows 68. Any pivoting parts may be spring biased to their use position, for example to provide stability when the part is being used and to avoid the part inadvertently closing. The spring biasing may be effected by strip spring members, for example with there being one strip spring member for each pivoting part.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the first and second arms 6, 8 may each be provided with a plurality of finger grip formations. The apparatus 2 may include more tools useful for the fashion industry than the tools mentioned above. The tools mentioned above may be in different combinations on the second end portions 34, 36 of the first and second arms 6, 8 respectively. Individual components shown in the drawings are not limited to use in their drawings and they may be used in other drawings and in all aspects of the invention.
