Description

AN ATTACHMENT MEANS FOR A BUILDING COMPONENT
The present invention relates to an attachment means for a building component and in particular to an attachment means for the attachment of a building component to a building structure.
Modern buildings often comprise additional external features attached to the main structure which serve decorative and/or functional purposes. One typical example of an external feature is a surround for a window or an entranceway. While these additional attachments would traditionally be constructed from wood or masonry, it has become common practice to construct all or portions of the attachments from composite materials which provide a lightweight yet strong and durable product.
Several attachment techniques exist for attachment of additional features to building structures. In some cases, a support bracket is utilised which provides support to the additional feature when attached. In other cases, the additional feature is attached by screws or other such mechanical fixings directly to the building structure.
While support brackets and direct fixings are sufficient to support the load of the additional features, they are time consuming to attach and often leave visible screw heads or other such features, spoiling the visual appearance of the additional feature. Moreover, where the requirement to remove the additional feature from the building structure arises, such removal is often difficult and can result in damage to the building structure and/or the additional feature.
Solutions do exist whereby an additional building feature is attached to a building via fasteners, after which a decorative strip or concealing element is applied over the portion having the fasteners in order to conceal and protect the fasteners. While this does address the issue of covering the fasteners, it still requires mechanical fasteners to be applied through the building feature itself, compromising the integrity thereof.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the problem of securing a building component to a building structure without the use of a support bracket or other intermediate component while mitigating the risk of failure of the building component or its means of attachment.
Accordingly, the present invention provides an attachment means for a building component comprising; a building structure mountable portion and; a building component portion, at least a portion of the building component portion being removably attachable to, and structurally supportable on, at least a portion of the building structure mounted portion without the use of visible fastenings; wherein the building component portion entirely encompasses the building structure mounted portion when attached thereto such that the building structure mounted portion is not visible.
Advantageously, a building component can be mounted to a building securely whilst providing concealment of any fastenings thereof.
Further advantageously, the integrity of the building component is not compromised by the application of mechanical fasteners therethrough, or by apertures formed for the application of such fasteners.
