Abstract

253,622. Lee, A. H. March 23, 1925. Cards and the like, punching.-In a machine for punching jacquard cards and the like, the step-by-step card traverse and the punching head are automatically actuated, the latter under manual control, while the punches are selectively locked in the 'head by plungers, slidingly pivoted to bell-cranks operated by means of keys arranged as in a piano. The machines are directly driven from a motor or belt-driven from a line shaft; when several machines are in line, a common line-shaft drives each machine through a clutch. An eccentric c<19> on the main-shaft c<9>, Fig. 12, oscillates a lever c<7> through a slot in which passes a rod c<4>, pivoted to the punching head c, c<1>, c<3>. The lever c<7> and the rod c<4> are operatively connected by depressing a pedal c<13> so that a catch c<12> on the rod engages the lever. A stop c<17> is provided for the rod c<4>. The blank is drawn through a slot b<1>, Fig. 1, between the perforated punching plates B, B<1> in which the punching head is slidably mounted. The pattern hole punches P and the peghole punch P<1> are slidably mounted in the head C, Fig. 6. The downward movement of each punch relative to the head C is limited by a shoulder p' thereon, while the upward movement may be limited by a plunger F, which can be pushed across the punch hole E against a spring f' by a bell-crank lever G. The bell-cranks G are mounted on a common pivot g<2>, and comprise rods g<1> having sliding pivotal engagement with the plungers. The arms G<1> are of varying length to co-operate with similarlyarranged arms H<1> of intermediate levers mounted in two sets on common pivots h<1>, Fig. 1. The arms H of these levers each contact with one of two sets of parallel keys K arranged on common pivots k<2>. The axes of the plungers may be splayed and the bell-cranks correspondingly arranged. Finger-positioning plates M are fixed between the keys, while palm-rests N, Fig. 12, are also provided. By depressing the requisite keys for each downward movement of the punching head C, the necessary perforations may be made in the blank. In a modification, the keys K and the bell-cranks H are connected by Bowden wire devices. In a further modification, a series of air chambers k<7>, Fig. 14, are connected to motor bellows k<9> operating the bell-cranks G. Coupled valves k<5>, k<6> actuated bv the keys control communicationbetween the chambers k', and the atmosphere and a low pressure chamber k<8> respectively.
