Be it known that I, WILLIXM W. LnsKnn, a citizen of the United States, residlng in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flexible Set-Bar Actions for Perforating-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to accountm machines for statistical cards or the lite in eneral, and more particularly to machines %or perforating statistical cards and the like.
One of the main objects of the presentinvention is to provide improved actuating mechanism in which in a single row of punches but one punch may be actuated at a time to the exclusion of the others; in
' which the actuation of a second punch in a single row of punches will automatically release the punch in which extension pins of comparatively thin stock may be used with great efficiency and accuracy.
These and other features,'capabilities and advantages of the invention will appear from the subjoined detail description of one specific embodiment thereof, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a perforator equipped with the present improvements.

In the embodiment illustrated there is provided a main frame M having secured at one end a-card hopper C from which the fed to a position between the die plate 12 and the punch guide plate 13 to cooperate with the punches 14 mounted in the perforations of the guide plate 13 with their heads 15 normally resting on the plate 16. From the plates 12 and tacle 17 after having been perforated. The plates 12v and 13 are adapted to be vertically reciprocated so that the punches 14 may cooperate with the settlng pins 18 to punch the cards in which operation the previously actuated; and
positions of a pin punches 14 which have no setting pins 18 depressed in alinement with them will rise with the plates l2 and 13, while those punches 14 which are obstructed in their upward movement by depressed setting pins 18 will perforate the card. For each punch 14 there is provided a setting pin 18 disposed in alinement and directly above the same.
The setting pins 18 are preferably com posed of flat stock and mounted and guided in the alined openings of the plates 19, 20, 21, and 22. On the pins 18 there are formed collars 23 which are disposed below the plate 21, between which collars 23 and the plate 22 the springs 24 are strained, whereby the pins 18 are normally maintained in raised position. Along the body ofthc pins 18, preferably between the plates 20 and 21, the recesses 25 and 26 are provided which cooperate with the lower ends of the shut ters 27 that are pivotally connected at their upper ends to the cross to which plates 19 and 20 are secured.
The recesses 25 and 26. of each row of pins 18 face in the same direction, a shutter being provided for each row of pins 18, so that a single shutter may cooperate with the recesses of all of the pins of that particular row. The lower ends 30 of the shutters 27 are preferably inclined inward toward the pins 18 with which they cooperate. The shutters 27 are normally maintained in contact with the pins 18 by means of the springs 31 (Fig. 3) which are secured at their upper ends to the cross piece 29 and have their lower ends disposed against the lips 32 formed at the outer lower ends of the shutters 27.
For setting the'pins 18 a transversely 'm0vable carriage 33 is provided on which the 'key actuated plungers 34 are mounted. The carriage 33 is actuated across said pins 18 in a step by step movement so that its row of plungers 34 successively register with the rows of pins 18. p
In the operation of the machine, with every actuation of a plunger 34 a pin 18 will be depressed in that row of pins 18 which is 1n registration With the plungers 34, which pin 18 upon being depressed will thrust the shutter adacent thereto to one side until the bent portion 30 enters the upper recess 25 of such depressed pin 18. The portion 30 will carriage next succeeding row -a downwardly extending arm 44 which is provide 36 are uniquely stamping out or indenting the metal, in

Thereafter the shutters 27 will be rocked to one side and the pins 18 permitted to be raised by their springs 24.
The rocking of about by means of transverse slots 41 in mounted on a rocking shaft 42 provided with 1s rocked by means of a rod 45 engaged and reci rocated by a cam 46v carried on the sha 48.
The tripping keys 40 are slidable toward and away from the shutters and are frictionally held in the slots 41. In order to lock the keys in inner or outer position there a locking plate 54 carried on the outer face of said rocker plate 35 and adapted to engage the inner notch 56 or the outer notch 57 of the keys 40. Only the keys 40 that are set in innerv position rock the shutters 27. If it be desired not to release the pins 18 of any rows, the keys 40 of such rows are set in outer position.
In the operation of the-foregoing, when the pins 18 were thus released the shutters 27 would sometimes fail to entirely free the Vance of the carriage the entire record has the shutters 27 is brought tripping keys 40 seated in edges of the recesses 25 and thus prevent the return of such depressed pins. To overcome this defect the shutters 27 are given a further rocking motion by the teats 36 formed on such pins 18 below the recesses 25, which teats 36 are well rounded to form cams whereby the pins 18 will easily ride over the edges of the shutters 27. The teats formed on such pins 18 by which case advantage is taken of the flat thin stock for the stamping operation, and in turn a cheap and economic article produced. These teats 36 will rock the shutter more than enough to cause the shutter to clear the recess 25, of the previously depressed pin, whereupon the latter rises until the teat engages the shutter and by cam action pushes the to normal position whenever a second pin in such row is depressed.

In a perforator having means for supporting a card, punches, setting pins for cooperating with said punches to perforate the cards, means for normally mamtaining said pins in raised position, means for. setting said setting pi'ns, there being recesses in the sides ofsaid pins, operating with said recesses to anchor said ms in depressed position when so set cams or facilitating the cooperation of saidshutters with said setting pins, and means for shutters for 20- actuating said shutters to permit said setting pins to be restored to normal position.

In a perforator having means'for supporting a card,'punches, setting pins for c0- operatmg with said punches to perforate the cards, means for normally maintaining said pins in raised position, means for setting said pins, there being two recesses in the sides of said setting pins all facing in the same direction, the setting pins being disposed in rows, a shutter for each row of setting pins to cooperate therewith to anchor the depressed pins in depressed position, and a teat formed on each setting pin below its upper recess for cooperating with a shutter to facilitate the cooperation of such shutter with such setting pin. 4

In a perforator having means for supporting a card, punches, setting pins for oothe cards, means for normally maintainingsaid pins in raised position, means for setthere being two recesses 1n the sides of said setting pins all facin in the same direction, the setting pins being disposed in rows, a shutter for each row of setting pins to cooperate therewith to anchor the depressed pins in depressed position, and an indentation made 1n each pin to press out the metal below its upper recess to form a teat to cooperate with a shutter to facilitate cooperation of such shutter with such setting pin.
6. In a perforator having means for supporting a card, punches, setting means composed of fiat stock and cooperating with said punches to perforate the cards, means for normally'maintaining said pins in raised position, means for setting said-setting pins there being two recesses in the sides of sai setting pins, in rows, a shutter for each row ofsetting pins to cooperate therewith to anchor the depressed pins in depressed position, and a ressed out teat in each settlng pin immejately below its upper recess for co6perat ing with-a shutter to facilitate cooperation of such shutter with such setting pin.
