Abstract

253,444. Vicars, E. L. Dec. 17,1924. Bakers' ovens. - In a " travelling " biscuit oven in which pans carried by endless chains are maintained in an horizontal plane while passing round end sprockets or moving in a vertical flight, rows of cut or moulded biscuits are deposited on the pans by a fripping conveyer. In the apparatus shown the pans or their supporting frames are pivoted tothe conveyer chains at opposite corners and the end sprockets, for example the sprockets 51, 52, for the two chains are spaced apart a distance equal to the width of a pan or its frame. Outside the oven the conveyer passes in an horizontal flight beneath the knife edge delivery bight 11 of the feed conveyer 10, and within the oven round two pairs of sprockets 54, 56, and 51, 52, the drive being effected from a main shaft 22a through bevels 24, a shaft 25 and worm gearing 26. The two pairs of sprockets 53, 55, and 54, 56, between which runs the feeding-flight of the oven conveyer, are mounted in frames connected together by a rod 35, and these frames can be reciprocated to give a step by step motion to the feeding- flight while the rest of the oven conveyer travels at a constant speed. This reciprocation is effected from a cam 50, on a shaft 19 driven from the main shaft, through the connecting-rod 42, crank 41, rod 40, and a segmental pinion 38 engaging a rack on one of the frames. The cam 50 also reciprocates the delivery bight 11 of the feed conveyer through the rod 18, lever 15 and rod 13, and these two reciprocating movements are so co-ordinated that in the intervals between the backward feeding 'movements of the bight 11 both the feeding-flight of the oven conveyer and the bight 11 move forward, the former travelling a distance equal to the length of a pan plus the gap between two pans. During the feeding movement of the bight 11 the feeding-flight of the oven conveyer may be stationary. When biscuits cut in overlapping rows are being fed, an additional movement is given to the conveyer 10 relatively to the knife edge to ensure that, at the end of a feeding-movement, a row of biscuits will not be lying half on and half off the bight of the conveyer. To this end the lever 15 is pivoted at 16a on a link 16, which is oscillated from a cam 43 on the shaft 19 through a connecting-rod 49, crank 47 and connecting-rod 46. When this movement is not necessary the pivotal point of the link 46 is brought to the centre of oscillation of the crank 47 by the hand adjustment 48.
