Abstract

A waterproof plug 1 to seal holes in a boat skin 8 left after a fitting is removed. A watertight seal 9 is made between the flat face 2 of the plug and the boat skin, either with a flexible washer 12 or a sealant 10. The plug is secured by means of a threaded rod 4 screwed into threaded hole 3 of the plug, a washer 5 placed over the rod on the inside of the boat wall, and a fixing nut 7 screwed onto the rod to tighten and hold the plug system in place. The washer may have a slot 6 to allow additional sealant to be applied into the void 11 between the plug and internal washer. The flexible rubber washer is used for temporary filling of the hole, and can be removed easily. The sealant is used when a more permanent repair is required.

Description

Sealing Plug Description
This invention relates to a plug used to seal unused holes in the skin of a boat.
When access for drawing in or draining liquid from a boat is required through the outside skin of the boat, a hole is drilled and a hollow skin fitting is installed. In due course the original fitting may become redundant and the hole requires filling and proofing against the ingress of water.
In metal boats, this may take the form of a welded plate. In wooden boats this may take the form of a wooden plug and in boats fabricated from composite materials such as glass reinforced plastic the repair is generally made by bridging the hole with glass fibre and resin. These repairs can be time consuming and costly.
Statement of invention
To simplify the process, this invention proposes a simple plug to fill the exterior of the hole from the outside, the plug being fixed by a threaded rod, washer and fixing nut on the inside of the boat.
Example
The plug will be seated onto a bed of sealant or flexible waterproof washer between the plug and the skin of the boat in order to make a waterproof seal. The threaded rod of appropriate length is screwed into the plug and can be fixed for mechanical strength by an additional nut or thread locking material. The fixing washer is fed over the threaded rod from the inside of the boat skin and fixed in place with the fixing nut. Additional sealing and strengthening material can be added to the interior of the sealed joint after the installation of the plug through a slot in the fixing washer..
Advantages This system provides a method for rapidly filling holes left by unwanted skin fittings.
For temporary repairs, a rubber sealing washer can be used which requires no time for sealants to cure. The plug so installed can be removed at any time in order to utilise the hole for its original purpose.
Preferably for more permanent repairs, the use of sealants and fillers within the joint can render the repair permanent and structurally sound.
introduction to drawings
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows an array of individual parts which can be used to seal the hole in the skin of a boat. Figure 2 shows a typical repair with all the parts in place. Detailed description A plug 1 has a curved outer surface in order to aid smooth flow of water over the surface when installed. The plug 1 has a flat face 2 which enables a seal 9 to be made between the plug 1 and the skin of the boat 8. The seal 9 may be made water tight by use of a flexible waterproof washer 12 or a suitable sealing compound 10. The plug 1 has a threaded hole 3 into which a threaded rod 4 of suitable length is screwed. A washer 5 is provided in order to fix the threaded rod 4 by covering the inside hole in the skin 8 from the inside of the boat. A fixing nut 7 is provided in order to hold the parts in place and tighten the plug 1 against the skin 8 in order to complete the joint. A sealing compound 10 may be introduced into the void 11 via the slot 6 in the washer 5 in order to provide a higher integrity of seal and mechanically strengthen the final assembly.
