Abstract
A grease nipple connector has two ends with one end 20 for attaching to a supply of grease and the other end 11 for attaching to a grease nipple and a grease passageway 22 connects the two ends so that in use pressurised grease flows through the connector. The connector end that connects to the grease nipple has an end face 26 with a seal seat 27 and a seal mounted to the seal seat. When connected to a grease nipple the seal, which may be an O-ring, surrounds and seals the outlet of the grease passageway and also surrounds and seals the inlet fluid passageway of the grease nipple. The seal may sit in the seal seat and the seal seat may be a groove or a rebate. The two ends of the connector may be individual components that rotate and the end that connects to the grease nipple may be threaded on the inside to enable attachment to a threaded grease nipple.
Description
Improved Grease Nipple Connection
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to grease nipple connectors and in particular to a grease nipple connector, typically found at the end of a grease dispenser that seals against a grease nipple when attached thereto.
Background of the Invention
Where it is required that a part of a piece of equipment requires grease lubrication, that part of the equipment is provided with a grease nipple. A grease dispenser is provided with a connector that is adapted to attach to the grease nipple and when so attached the connector and the grease nipple allow passage of grease through the grease nipple.
One type of grease nipple that is attached to equipment comprises an externally threaded portion to which an internally threaded connector may be attached. The grease nipple has a central bore therein. The connector includes a cone shaped part that is positioned and dimensioned to engage with the central bore of the grease nipple when the connector is attached thereto. The cone shaped part itself includes a central bore. Grease is forced through the central bore of the cone shaped part, into the central bore of the grease nipple and then into the piece of equipment. The outer surface of the cone shaped part provides a seal with the opening of the central bore of the grease nipple. The problem with this type of connector is that the cone shaped part can become damaged through use This may result in parts of the cone shaped part breaking off or the central bore that extends through the cone shaped part becoming closed.
It would therefore be desirable to provide an improved connector for attachment to a grease nipple that does not suffer the above-mentioned disadvantages.
Summary of the Invention
According to the invention there is provided a grease nipple connector having a first end and a second end, wherein the first end is attachable to a supply of grease and the second end is attachable to a grease nipple, a grease passageway extending through the first end, the connector adapted so that grease may be caused to flow therethrough under pressure, characterised in that the first end comprises an end face and wherein the end face includes a seat seat and a seal mounted to the seal seat, the seal surrounding and sealing the outlet of the fluid passageway and when connected to a grease nipple surrounding and sealing an inlet fluid passageway thereof.
It is preferred that the seal sits in the seal seat.
Preferably, the seal seat is a groove or a rebate.
Advantageously, the seal is an 0-ring.
Preferably, the first end and the second end are individual components and the second end is mounted on the first end for relative rotation therebetween.
Advantageously, the second end includes an internally threaded wall for attachment to an externally threaded grease nipple.
The grease nipple connector of the invention is less susceptible to damage than those of the prior art, and provides a wider bore for grease to pass through into the grease nipple.
Brief Description of the Drawings
In the Drawings, which illustrate grease nipple connectors of the prior art and the invention and which are by way of example: Figure 1 is a cross-sectional representation of a grease nipple connector of the prior art; Figure 2 is a side view of a grease nipple connector according to the invention; and Figure 3 is cross-sectional view of the grease nipple connector of the invention on the axis A-A in Figure 2.
Detailed Description of the Drawings
Figure 1 illustrates a grease nipple connector 1 of the prior art. The connector 1 has an end 2 that is attachable to hose supplying grease. A cavity 3 extends from the opening 2 to an outlet 5. The outlet 5 is formed by a bore extending through a wall in the body of the connector 1. The bore forming outlet 5 extends through a conical nose portion 4. The function of the nose portion 4 is to engage with an opening in a grease nipple to which the connector 1 is attached by means of internal threads formed in the wall 6.
Referring now to Figures 2 and 3 the grease nipple connector 10 is formed in two parts 11 and 20. The first part 11 includes a wall 12 that is threaded internally. The wall 12 includes an inwardly projecting lip 13 which provides a sloping wall 14 that serves as a seat for a part of the second part 20 of the connector.
The second part 20 of the connector is rotatable relative to the first part 11. The second part 20 comprises a wall 21 which provides an opening 22 extending through the second part for the supply of fluid therethrough. The wall 21 includes a rim 25 that is of slightly smaller diameter than the internal diameter of the wall 12 of the first part. A sloping surface extends from the rim 25 to the wall 21. The wall 21 also provides a plurality of flat surfaces 23 for engagement by a wrench which may be required when attaching the first part 11 of the connector 20 to a grease nipple, or detaching the first part 11 from a grease nipple. The end face 26 of the second part 20 includes a rebate 27 extending around the opening 22. An 0-ring sits in this rebate 27.
When the connector 10 is attached to a grease nipple the 0-ring sitting in rebate 27 extends around the opening in the grease nipple. The 0-ring is pressed down on to the facing surface of the grease nipple by virtue of the threaded connection of the internal thread of the first part 11 of the connector with the external thread of the grease nipple.
The advantage of the connector of the present invention is that there is no part than needs to engage in the opening of the grease nipple and hence no protruding part to be damaged. Also, the through passageway for the grease to pass through can be significantly larger in cross-section than is possible with the connector of the prior art, since no part of the bore of the grease nipple is occupied by a part of the connector. The bore 22 can be specified such that its diameter substantially corresponds to the bore of the grease nipple.
