Abstract
253,380. Jelley, E. E. July 24, 1925. Sensitized films and papers; developing and fixing. -For sensitizing paper, parchment &c. without any gelatin or other colloidal substance a soluble silver salt, the silver of which is chemically combined with one or more of the three higher halogens, is used in conjunction with a water soluble, non-volatile, crystallisable, weak acid. Silver chlorate, perchlorate, bromate, dichlorobenzoate and other salts are instanced, and for the acid citric, tartaric and 2.3.6 trichlorobenzoic acid. The acid solution may be applied to the surface separately, and an alcoholic solution used. Development is effected by organic reducing agents such as metol, pyro, hydroquinone, but amidol is not suitable. If the coating does not contain sufficient silver salt to give the necessary image density (e.g. less than .0005 grms per sq. cm.) the exposure is shortened, and a soluble silver salt (e.g. nitrate, chlorate, but not permanganate or nitrite which destroy the developer), is added to the developer, the hydrogen-ion concentration of which should be between .0001 and .01. A fixing bath of hypo and bicarbonate is specified, but an acid fixing bath may be used. Various tones may be obtained by varying the exposure and the treatment. Detailed particulars of methods of preparing the paper and using it are given. Clean developing dishes are essential, and dishes of vulcanite porcelain or papier machÚ should be coated with paraffin wax.
