253,360. Rogers, F. H., (Republic Flow Meters Co.). June 17, 1925. Dynamometers. - In measuring the efficiency of electric power units comprising a steam turbine or other prime mover 10 and an electric generator 11 by means of an indicating instrument having two circuits, the current in one circuit is controlled according to the load output of the unit, and the current in the other circuit is varied inversely as the power supplied to the unit by a U-tube 15 containing a balanced column of mercury 16 controlling the current in the circuit and operated by the differential pressure set up by an orifice 14 in the conduit 13 supplying steam or other power medium to the turbine &c. The mercury may vary a non-inductive resistance 21 through contacts 22, the resistance 21 being in series with the pressure coil 20 of a wattmeter or the moving coil of an electrodynamometer, the current coils 19 or stationary coils being in series with the load 18. In the case of a polyphase generator, one indicating instrument is sufficient if the load is balanced, but, if the load is unbalanced, the number of instruments and resistances is one less than the number of wires leading from the generator.
