Abstract

A fire arms sound moderator/suppressor for the purpose of reducing and limiting explosive gas sounds when a weapon is fired and controlling the release of said gases, comprising of a cylindrical body having a plurality of baffles/radial deflectors located on the inside of said cylindrical body. The baffles/ radial deflectors rotate the explosive gases in a radial motion ensuring that the gases spend more time in contact with the moderator surface. The rotating of the gases within the moderator will preferably allow them to dissipate over a longer period of time compared to that of the uncontrolled release from the barrel alone.

Description

Gun Sound Moderator: by means of rada gas orculahon for the use on Small Arms / firearms U DefliOn This design aflows for much sniaher aid Ughter Gun Sound Moderators, than previous possible: to have the same, or better, report/noise reducing properties The Unique and novel design of this Gun Sound Moderator is that the gas caving the gun barrei is deflected within the Gun Sound Moderators body such that the hot gas foHowing, and ejected in front of, the projectile is forced to rotate na radial mol ion in around the inside of the body of the Gun Sound Moderator before it finally exits the moderator.
This radial motion ensures the gas is a: cooled by loosing heat to the body of the Gun Sound Moderator (thereby reducing in volume proportionateiy to the heat loss, Charles' law) in the most efficient way and b: eaves the Gun Sound Moderators in a control way Figure 1: Side, cut away. view of typical sound moderator and gun barreUrnuzzle Figure 2: Side, cut away, view of gun Sound moderator showing radial defiectors (for clarfy these are shown in the same plane but may he rotated apart at each stage or tave more than one detector in each stage). Blue hold arrows follow gas flow from concentric hole in moderator (1). deflected off the deflector (2) (the defection and guided from internal surface of moderator cylinderwall is not show here for clarity hut is shown in figure 3) Figure 3: End view cross section of gun sound moderator showing radial deflectors showing radial gas flow from unique defector design. Note two defiectors are shown 1 30° apart. Blue arrows follow gas flow from concentric hole in moderator (I), deliected off the deflector (2) and defected and guided from internal surface of moderator cylinder wall (3) flgure 2 shows the defectors as approximately 45 degree straight items, in practice these can be shaped for better efficiency by looking at the multiple angles of the gas expands through the concentric hole. Each angle will have a correspondrng angle to which the deflector is shaped to ensure that the gas is deflected in a radial fashion at approximately 90 degrees angle to the prolectile movement. In practice the means the defector is curved in shape and for the purposes of making a practical gun sound moderator isa radius This is shown in figure 4 with only a single stage for clarity Figure 4: An example of an advanced shape of the radial deflectorto show how gas is efficiently directly to travel in a radial way inside a single stage of the gun sound moderator r r

Claims (2)

  1. Claims A Gun Sound Moderator for mounting at the muzzle of a gun barrel The Unique and novel design of this Gun Sound Moderators that the gas leaving the gun barrel s deflected within the Gun Sound Moderators body such that the gas rotates in a radial motion in around the inside of the body ol the Gun Sound Moderator before it finally exits the moderator. This aHows for much srnailer and lighter Gun Sound Moderators, than previous possible; to have the s-acne, or better, report/noise educing properties. The report/noise of a gun is a result of the pressure wave generated by the high pressure, hot, gas leaving the barrel oIthe gun atthu muzzlr. Reducing the piessure/volurne of thegaswiil have a elationship nile ieduction of the report/noise of the gun. This unique/novel design whereby the gas is rotated in a radial motion within the body of the Gun Sound Moderator works to reduce the repon/noise by 2 means' 1. The Gas spends more time in contact with the material of the moderator, cooling the gas.Rotating the gas in a radia' motion, rather than merely interfering with its progress, within the Gun Sound Moderator ensures the gas, whrch is hot, spends more time in contact with the Gun Sound Moderators matenas of construction and the gas is therefore cooled rurther than would be nomiafly possible in a given volunie on a normal battled gun sound moderator.rhe radial movement of the gas and the internal design ensure the hot gas spends as much time as possible with the externa cylinder of the Gun Sound Moderator, it is this external surface which. has the greatest ability to loose heat due to its direct contact wth ambient temperature air allowing the Gun Sound Moderator to continue to work efficiently.Cooling the gas reduces it volume, as described by Chades law. Where volume of the gas is proportiona' to the temperature of the gas reducing the temperature of the gas reduces the gases volume and there fore the pressure wve which creates the report/noise.
  2. 2, Controlled gas release Deliberately rotating the gas ensures that the gas is retained within the body of the Gun Sound Moderator before finally exiting in a controlled way over a greater period of time compared to that of the uncontrolled release of a gun barrel alone.Design principles As the gas from the gun barrel exits the barrel and passes within the moderator it expands, approximated to a cone in the figure 1, in with a velocity in the direction of the exit of the gun sound moderator furthest from the muzzle of the barrel. Baffles within a typical moderator design strip strip the high velocity gas from the projectile; this is shown schematically in figure 1
