Abstract

The laminate edging tool comprises a means to trimming laminate bevel edges on worktops or other laminate boards that have a thin laminate applied to them such a kitchen worktops or work surfaces. The edging tool comprises of a blade ( 1 or 3) situated at an angle so the tip of the blade is in perfect alignment to the top of the laminate product or worktop so when drawn backwards or forwards the blade will score the laminate to be trimmed in line with the adjacent edge. The process is repeated until the laminate edge to be trimmed, is cut through completely. The other side of the blade is situated so the exposed end of the blade is at 45 degree angle. When applied to the edge of the laminate that has already been trimmed it will marry the two pieces of laminate at a perfect 45 degree angle when drawn backwards. This process can be repeated until the edges are perfectly married together.

Description

Laminate Edging tool description
The laminate edging tool comprises a means to trimming laminate edges on worktops or other laminate boards that have a thin laminate applied to them. The edging tool comprises of a blade situated at an angle so the tip of the blade is in perfect alignment to the top of the laminate product or worktop so when drawn backwards or forwards the blade will score the laminate to be trimmed in line with the adjacent edge. The process is repeated until the laminate edge to be trimmed,is cut through completely.
Background of the invention
The present invention refers to a laminate trimming tool used for the removal of excess laminate material by hand. The tool comprises of of a small blade which is held in position by fixings to a solid material.
The small blade is held in position so that it can be applied to a laminate product to produce a finished edge safely with little or no skill.
Normally trimming of a laminate product would be produced by a file or router, both of which require a certain amount of skill.
This invention requires little or no skill and can be used by anyone requiring to finish an edge on laminate by hand, so requiring no power tools. It can be used in either hand as the blade can be fixed to either side The tool fits comfortably in the palm of ones hand.
It will give a professional edge to the end of a worktop or other laminate product.
The object of the invention and most important features The object of the invention is to provide a hand tool used for trimming laminate that requires very little skill but will produce a professional edge.
It is simple in construction and very easy to handle. It can be used with either left or right hand,as the blade can be applied to either side of the tool.
The tool comprises of a small blade that is 30mm long and 10mm wide and 3mm thick and beveled all the way around. These blades are a stock item known as an RBA blade (fig 7) generally used in routers bits to cut laminate.
Once the blade is applied to the tool it is in position to trim laminate and provide a chamfered edge
Specification of drawings
In the following the invention will be explained in closer detail with reference an embodiment shown in the enclosed drawings.
Fig 1 shows end elevation -showing the laminate edging strip cutter Fig 2 shows a plan view of the invention, showing areas that are removed from the solid part of the tool to expose the blade in a certain way. The blade sits in a recessed area the width and depth of the blade to make it more comfortable to hold but is not vital.
Fig 2 #2 the blade fixed in position using screws or other type of fixings to make the blade safe.
Fig 2 #3 shows the end of the cutting blade, exposed to be used for finishing the edge of the laminate, and edge strip.
Fig 2 #1 shows the tip of the cutting blade which is exposed. This is used to trim the laminate edges. The tip scores the laminate trimming it each time it is drawn backwards or forwards. The tip of the blade protrudes by 2-3mm so it can not over cut the laminate.
Fig 3 shows end elevation -showing the laminate chamfering edge cutter Fig 4 #5 shows A small 90 degree area has been removed from the solid material to expose a small section of the blade. The amount of exposed blade that interacts with the laminate edge is 2-3mm. This slight exposure of the blade will stop the tool over cutting the laminate.
Fig 4 #6 shows a semicircular section removed from the tool enabling it to be hooked over the laminate strip to be trimmed.
Fig 5 shows a worktop with an edge strip attached ready to be trimmed against the blade tip. The tool is hooked over the excess laminate to be trimmed off.
Fig 6 shows how the tool is placed on the edge of worktop to be chamfered that has been trimmed by the blade tip.
Fig 7 shows an RBA blade,it is a small blade with chamfered edges used in router bits. It is 30mm long 10mm wide and 3mm thick with two holes for fixing. These blades are made from tungsten or steel and have 2 holes enabling it to be fixed to the tool.
Detailed Description
The hand tool is used for finishing edge strips on laminate and is used by holding the tool in ones left or right hand and held tightly in the palm using thumb and forefinger. It is made from a solid material that supports a small blade (fig 2#2) known as an RBA blade (fig 7) which is used for the removal of excess edging finishing strip on the end of worktops and similar laminate products and create a finished edge.
The solid material holds the blade in the correct position (fig2) to score an edging strip flush with a worktop or other laminated products to create a finished edge. The blade is situated at an angle so that the blade tip (fig 2#1) is in the line of the flat surface of the worktop or other laminated product (fig 5) perpendicular to cut edge to form a score on the laminate edging strip, and protrudes by 2-3mm to expose the blade tip. (fig 2#1) In addition a right angled section as shown in (fig 2#3) is removed from the solid part of the tool to expose the end of the blade which can be used to cut and chamfer the laminate edge strip to create a final finish.
To initially trim the laminate strip, the tool is placed in position by hooking the tool over the laminate strip to be trimmed, so that the blade tip (fig 2#1) can interact with the laminate edge to be trimmed as shown in figs. The tool must be held in ones hand at all times so that both faces of the removed right angled section (fig 4#6) are against the worktop and edge to be trimmed (fig 5) this will ensure that blade tip (fig 2#1) is in constant contact with the laminate edge to be trimmed. The tool is then moved along keeping the faces of the tool against the worktop and the edge (fig 5)to be trimmed, so the blade tip can score a perfect line on the edge to be trimmed, in perfect alignment with the worktop or laminate product. (fig 5) The tool is repeatedly moved along the edge of the laminate product using the blade tip as shown in fig 5, until the laminate edge to be trimmed is scored repeatedly until cutting is complete and the excess laminate can be removed.
Once the cutting of the laminate edge strip is complete, the tool is turned over to use the other side of the tool as shown in (fig6) which is placed on the already trimmed edge so that the blade (fig 2#3) is in contact with the edge of the now married together laminate edge strip and worktop. The hand tool is then repeatedly wiped along the previously cut edge strip keeping the exposed blade in contact with the previously trimmed laminate edge strip to create a chamfered finish (fig 6) marrying the two pieces of laminate at a 45 degree angle.
