Description

Improvements in the provision of Mobile or Holiday home accommodation.
The invention rdates to improvements in the provision of accommodation, common'y known as hohday homes, but which can a'so be referred to as a mobile home, lodge or caravan, In any case the accommodation to which the apphcation rdates is of the type which typically comprises an accommodation unit formed of a base, side walls, end walls, and a roof and which is moUnted on a chassis which includes at least one set of wheels to allow the same to be transportable at least for a limited distance, most typically from the point of manufacture onto a transport vehicle and then for un'oading from the transport vehide to the site at which the same is to be used and at which site mst tvnicallv the accommodation is fixed for a i nuniber of months or years.
The extent of transportation which is possible, can vary depending on the particular type of the accommodation and size of the same as exemplified in the preceding paragraph but the accommodation is hereonin referred to in a non limiting manner as a mobile home.
The provision of mobile homes is well known and the sizing of the accommodation area can vary depending on the expense and features which a customer requires of the mobile home. Ihe mobile home may be constructed of a single unit or two or more units which are transported separately and then joined together and/or assembled at the site of use.
Conventionally, the interior of the mobile home is formed with one or more bedrooms, a kitchen, a sitting room and one or more bathrooms, and typically also a dining area.
Conventionally, the approach taken with regard to the design of the layout of the interior of these mobile homes is to provide the different rooms so that at least one of the wails of the rooms is formed by part or all of an external wall of the mobile home and to allow each of the rooms to have at least one window in a side waIl or end wall thereof to allow daylight to enter the room. Most typically, the sitting room will have a wall formed by an end external wall and part of the opposing external side walls of the mobile home, and the one or more bedrooms have walls formed by the opposing external end wall of the mobile home and part of the opposing ends of the external side walls of the mobile home. The kitchen and bathroom are located so as to have at least one wall formed of part of the remainder of the external side walls of the mobile home and are located intermediate the bedrooms and the sitting room. In another configuration the sitting room may be located intermediate the external end walls of the accommodation space but with at least one of the walls of the sitting room formed by a portion of the external side wall and a bedroom can be provided at each of the ends with the external end walls and/or part of the external side walls forming the bedrooms walls. In either configuration the aim is therefore to ensure that windows can be located in the external end and side walls of the mobile home, so that each of the rooms is provided with external daylight from one or more windows in the side and/or end walls.
In practice, while this allows daylight to be provided into each of the key areas around the mobile home, it severely restricts the options which are available in the possible configurations of the rooms. This means that conventionally the design of the interior of mobile homes has been relatively rigid and unchanged for many years.
Ihe aim of the present invention is to provide a mobile home with an accommodation area and to provide the possibility of providing an increased number of configuration options for the rooms therein and to provide a mobile home structure which allows the same to be provided so as to allow greater flexibility in the configuration of the floor plans of the mobile home and also, to utiise the relatively restricted space which is available, in a more efficient manner so as to provide, where possible, one or more further rooms for use in comparison to conventional floor layouts and configurations.
In a first aspect of the lnvenbi)fl, there is provided a mobile home, said mobile home haviiw an accommodation area which is defined by external h walis, a floor and a roof; said accommodation area configured to define a number of rooms and/or spaces wherein at least one of the rooms is defined by a floor, walls and a ceiling and each of the walls of the said room is spaced inwardly from the external walls of the mobile home.
Thus, in accordance with this invention, there is provided at least one room in the mobile home which does not have any walls formed by at least part of an external wall of the mobile home. It is found that in practice, this allows at least one additional room to be made available in the configuration and aflows utilization of the availaHe space within the mobile home to be improved.
In one embodiment, the said room is used as a bathroom, shower room, or an ensuite bath room, and is provided with plumbing and electrical fixtures as required to perform the bathroom function.
In one embodiment, at least one means is provided to allow daylight, from the exterior of the mobile home, to enter the said room.
In one embodiment, the said exterior daylight is allowed to access the said room via a channel between the roof or an external vall of the mobile home and the ceiling and/or side wall of the said room with openings at each end allowing the passage of daylight along the channel.
In one embodiment the channel is formed by at least one tube which has a first end exposed to daylight through either the roof or external wall of the mobile home and a second end which is exposed to the said room so as to allow daylight to pass from the first end to the second end and into the room to light the same.
Typically, at least one but typically both of the first and second ends of the tube are provided with substantially transparent material which may also be adapted to ifirther enhance the transfer of daylight into the room. In one embodiment at the outer end of the channel there is provided a device for day'ight and at the inner end a means for improving the distribution of the daylight into the said room. Tn one embodiment the collector is a mechanical device to focus and direct the daylight or can be a passive device that accepts easily the daylight or other external light sources.
In one embodiment the channel is a tube and in one embodiment he same can be lined with means to improve the transport of the light, such as reflective or prismatic material or may contain lenses or other devices to direct the light through the tube.
In one embodiment the distribution means of the channel includes a light diffuser so as to extend and spread the effect of the light in the said room.
In addition, or alternatively, the walls and/or ceiling of the said rooms are provided with one or more apertures fbr windows which allow the transfer of daylight from rooms or areas adjacent to the same and which themselves have at least one window through which daylight can enter.
lypically, in addition to the means of allowing daylight to enter the room, electrical lighting means can be provided.
In a further aspect of the invention, there is provided a mobile home having an accommodation area defined by side walls, end walls, a roof and floor, said accommodation area having a chassis with wheels for transport of the mobile home, said accommodation area having a plurality of rooms defined therein and wherein there is provided at least one room within the mobile home into which daylight can pass via a light channel leading from the roof of the mobile home into the said room.
Typically the channel is located so as to depend from the roof into the ceiling of the said room.
in one embodiment all of the \valis of the said room are spaced from the external wafls of the mobile home accommodation area.
In another embodiment at least one of the walls of the said room is formed by part of an external wall of the mobile home but no window is or can be provided in said external waif in one embodiment the provision of a window is prevented by the inclusion of a facility in the said room. in one embodiment the said facility is a shower which is positioned on or adjacent to the said external waif The provision of a room with the means to allow the passage of daylight into the room without the need for the room to be provided at an external wall or for a window to be provided on an external wall, means that the room, and the functionality of the room, can be achieved with the room located separately from any external walls of the mobile home and/or with the room formed with an external wall in which a window cannot be provided. This in turn means that the functionality and use of the room can be achieved in a new position in the internal space and thereby free up space adjacent the external wall portion or portions \vhich that room would normally have taken up. 1his, in turn, allows that space to be used for another purpose such as for example, to provide another bathroom, shower room or ensuite bathroom, or to increase the size of another existing room or area such as a hallway or walkway. It therefore allows greater flexibility in the possible configurations of the rooms of the mobile home, which is particularly important when one considers that the available accommodation space within a mobile home is always confined and at a premium.
Specific embodiments of the invention are now described with reference to the accompanying drawings; wherein Figure 1 illustrates a mobile home with a conventional external appearance.
Figure 2 illustrates a conventional floor plan of a mobile home.
Figure 3a-c ifiustrate three embodiments of floor plan configurations which can be achieved in accordance with the invention; Figures 4a and b illustrate embodiments of means for allowing day'ight into a room formed in accordance with embodiments of the invention.
Referring firstly to Figure 1, there is illustrated a mobile home 2 with a conventional external appearance. 1he mobile home includes an accommodation intema area which is defined by side walls 4, 6, opposing end walls 8, 10, a roof 12 and a floor. Windows 14 can be provided in the side and end walls and located as appropriate with regard to the configuration of rooms within the same and one or more doors 16 can also be provided as indicated so as to allow access to and from the interior space of the mobile home and the said door or doors can be provided on any of the external walls of the mobile home. Ihe accommodation area is supported on a chassis 15 which, in turn is provided with wheels 17 which allow the limited movement of the mobile home. Support struts 19 can be provided at each end so as to maintain the mobile home in a stable manner when located at the site for use.
Figures 2 illustrates a conventional floor plan of a mobile home of the type shown in ligure I and it will be seen that each of the rooms, which comprise sitting room IBa, kitchen lBb, dining area The, bathroom 18c and bedrooms 18d, arc located so that at least one of the walls of each room is formed by at least a portion of an external side 4,6 or end 8,10 wall and, furthermore, at least one window 14 is located on the side or end walls so that each of the rooms or areas receives natural daylight through at least one window.
It will be appreciated that the conventional requirement for each of the roonis and/or areas to be provided with an external wall and furthermore, a window, significantly reduces the possibility of reconfiguring the available floor space within the mobile home and furthermore, the relatively confined space which is available within the mobile home makes the re-configuration of the same even more difficult to achieve.
Tn accordance with the invention, there is provided a possibility of greatly increasing the possible floor p'ans which can be created and also the ability to provide additional rooms and/or increase the existing rooms or areas Figures 3a and b illustrate two examples of possible floor plans which can be created in accordance with the invention and it wilt be seen that in addition to the conventional rooms 18, there is provided a room 20. The room 20 is provided with walls 22, 24, 26 and 28 which define the shape of the room and each of the walls 22,24,26,28 are spaced inwardly from the external walls of the mobile home so as to be separate and spaced inwardly from the exterior end and side walls 4, 6, 8, 10. As such, this represents a significant change from the conventional floor plans as the spacing of the walls of the room 20 from the external walls of the mobile home as indicated by arrows 30 means that the room 20 cannot be provided with light from any of the windows 14 from the external walls. It should also be appreciated that in one embodiment, in addition to allowing an additional room to be created, the room 20 can be used to perfbrm a function of one of the conventional rooms and thereby allow the additional space which is freed up to be used to increase the size of another room I 8a -e or area such as a walkway 32. It should be appreciated that these are example floor plans and many other plans are possible. For example one or more floor plans may have the sitting room 18a located substantially centrally between the end walls 8,10 of the mobile home with portions of the external side walls 4,6 forming some of the walls of the sitting room, rather than at an end wall end as indicated in the two examples given.
Figure 3c illustrates another possible configuration in accordance with a ifirther embodiment of invention. In this case the room 120 is provided with side walls 122,124,128 which are spaced from the respecdve parallel external walls 104, 108, 110 as with the other embodiments but in this case the wall 126 of the room is formed by part of the external wall 11)6.
TTowever the room 121) is a bathroom and includes a shower unit 130 which is located at the external wall 106 and wall 126 and therefore means that it is not possible to provide a window in the externa' wall 106 as there is no space. Tn this case therefore the introduction of daylight into the room 121) is again required to be achieved in accordance with the invention.
in accordance with the invention the said room 20, 120 is provided with means to allow external daylight to enter the room and light up the same during daylight hours and or other light from the sky, such as moonlight can also be used to light up the room 20,120. As illustrated in Figure 4a, this can be achieved by the provision of a channel 34 which has a first end 36 which is exposed to the external face of the roof 12 (part of which is shown in cross section) of the mobile home and thereby is exposed to external light, such as daylight, and an opposing, second end 38, which leads into the ceiling 40 (part of which is shown in cross section) of the room 20. In addition, light collection means 42, as previously described may be provided at the external end 36 of the channel or intermediate thereof, to maximise the light which enters the channel and diffusion means 42' can be provided at the second end 38 to enhance the dissipation of the daylight into the room 20, 121) in the direction of arrows 44 to maximise the brightness in the room.
In addition, or alternatively, any of the walls 22, 24, 26, 28, 122,124, 128 of the room 20,120 may be provided with apertures or windows, as illustrated in Figure 4b, which indicates portion of the top of two of the walls 24, 26 which are each provided, adjacent the ceiling 40, with windows 42 which allow daylight which enters the rooms 1 8a -d through the external windows therein, to pass from one or more of those rooms and into the room 20 through the said apertures or windows as indicated by arrows 48.
It should be appreciated that although the invention has been described with reference to the creation of one room in accordance with the invenon, it is possible that a number of rooms wii1 be created in this manner and in accordance with the invention, thereby further increasing the number of configuration possibilities.
There is therefore provided the means in accordance with the invention to significandy improve the configuration of the ayout of the accommodation area of mobile homes which represents a significant change in an industry and area of accommodation in which there have been no significant changes over many years.
